1 A 'CUE' FOR THE PUBLH Helen Barry, the Actress, Finds a Splendid Ton- ic in Paine's Celery Compound. j '('! : The play is done, the curtain drops, Slow failing to the prompter's bell ; A moment yet the actress stops and looks around to say farewell. It is an irksome word and task, And when she's laughed and said her say, She allows as she removes her mask a face that's anything but gay. Acting is not all gaiety, lights, and ap plause, j There is a deal of drudgery, vexation, and heartache that the people in the front of the housa little imagine. j Alary Anderson used to advise young stage-struck girls to keep off the stage. The feverish excitement, the late hours, the drudgery of rehearsals, the unnatur al stimulus from new audiences, rivalry and adplause, make the life full of perils to health of mind and body. The care less t heatre-going public have no notion of the strain on the nerves that is insep arable from a dramatic career. But members of 'the profession' know what it is, and they have, as a body, learned how best to keep their nervous systems strong and capable of doing the hard work demanded of them. That is why Paine's celery compound is so pop ular on the stage. Helen Barry, the well-known -actress, writes to a phveician, friend, from Tea Box Cottage, Beltfort : "It is with great pleasure I write to till you that I find Paine's celery com pound a splendid tonic. I should like . you to procure me a few more bottles." Iella Fox when "run down" from overwork, by the advice of the wife of a yyEATllIstCFOSD ITT ATT, Attoroera mi Law. Their testimony is noteworthy because no class of women work harder or are under greater nerv ous strain. Women in every walk of life have rea son to be grateful to Prof. Phelps of Dart mouth, who discovered Paine's celery compound. He understood the peculiar weakness of the sex. He knew tnat the backache, lassitude, headache, sleepless ness, and loss of appetite all mean that the supply of nervous force is low and in adequate to the demands upon it. The experience of thousands has taught the women of the country that only Paine's celery compound will give health to the nerves, ana through them, to the entire body. The annual expenses would be just atxMit half what they are cow. Why ehould't the government economic? The papers have been telling what the meeting of the Republican clubs in Port land was cot for. It will probably never be known what it waa really for. It may be predicted tt will be regretted it waa ever for anything. During (he coming month the straw berry wilt rule. It is in the market with a ruddy countenance and a determined look in it face to run things. It will be very promiscuous and promises to meet the times both in price and quantity. Matters are decidedly hot over in Cor ral! is. More feeling probably over the city election than for years. Right upon toe heels of it a prominent citizen commit ted suicide: If times are dull it must be somewhere else than ConraltLs. Memorial day, as it is now known, was instituted by General John A. Logan when he was Commander-in-Chief the Grand Army of the Republic The day was first celebrated May 30, 1S6S, by a general order from the commander. On account of lack of funds, San Fran' Cisco, a village down the coatt. waa or dered relieved of ita electric lights and gas for several weeks. One of the dis advantages of being a small p'ace. big place like Albany or Portland would never even contemplate such a thing. The mealing of republican clubs was be ing held in Portland yesterday. It was the intention of the bosses to keep down a dis cussion of the silver question; but depend upon it, silver will up; it i lbs issue of the day, and split cr no plit it must be given a hearing. Susan B. Anthony is in San Frandbco. Dear old girl, how she would like to have her rights. By the way if any one has any more righU than Stuao B. who is it. But she can't vote, there's the rub, though much more capable cf doing so than half the men. Hello, there, the Astoria Budget! maa has his eyes open. He says: "Men who owe evert body and can't pay their honest dbls can run oft to political gatherings in fortland and blow in their money. There are a good many of this kind of people in AstorU." There are men in Xew York City, per fect sbylock, who make over a hundred per cent interest, though the legal rate is only 6 p.T cent. It is done oa household security. For a loan of 1100 for 3 months $35 is charged beside the interest. As it is the only way some people can get money millions of dollars are loaned ia taat city at suck suicidal rites. The Roseborg Review gives Secretary of State Kincaid a genUe bag, one not with out several grains of truth in it. if tbe troth were told : Tbe muddle into which Secre tary Kincaid is getting affairs of the state, shows thai because a maa has been editor of a mdssbacf paper for thirty consecutive years, during which time he neTer pub lished a live news item, is no reason way be should be considered competent ta fill an important public office. "So far as Oregon is concerned reform in in the state government and everlastingly sitting down on tbe Tammany ring that has plundered the people in various ways fur the past twenty year is just as import ant aa a declaration on finance. Will the single-gold standard shouters at Portland endorse reform in state affairs?" Salem Journal. A bard slam by a republican paper on Oregon republicans who have been in pow er in Oreifoa for twenty years. There is nothing in an impure life, no recompense for violation ot the social code. Nothing is gained while charac ter is lost. The greatest wealth any man can obtain is characttr. Tbe libertine of today, whether fouad ia the lower crust or upper crust, is unworthy of tne confidence of any one and should be promptly atd completely ostracised from Ldecent society. On the other hand, every man or womaa who has fallen should be given a chance to rise, but the progress upward inut be a consistent one, ema nating from thn heart and nut a matter of policy. The young maa who starts out in the wrong path will rue it again and attain during his life. Some people are going to have Cleve land call an extra session in order to pro vide sufficient fun lj to run the grern ment. Pos'maser General Wilson has a level head . He sa-s "it is not so seri ous as the general view seems to make it. If trade revives snd continues to improve as it has of late there aill be revenue enough. From now on inert ssingly l'rge amount of whiskey must be taken out under the new tax, and this increase will amount to over $15,000,000. With an increase in the revenue from customs duties the new tax oa whiskey will make up the deficits th.s month. You see, the internal revenue collections are 16,000,000 and the tariff nets about $7, 000,000, while we paid out over $10,000, 000. 1 think times are improving and tbe government will have all the necessary revenue and a deficit will be a thing of the past." Only a year or so ago the republicans bowled all over the land that the sheep and ool industry was going to be rain ed by the democratic party, and as a le giliuiate result of this howl there .aa a slump in tbe mutton and wool markets the wiley bcyer always takes advant age of such talk- But what are the facte. Bhcep have bet u going up in price, right long, since the democratic tariff law took effect, and the wool market is real ly stronger and better now than it was a year ago. In addition to these facts it should also be remembered that ail the people are benefitted by the tariff law. in that they can now bay better woolen ! clothlnir for the tame money, or aa aood woolen c'othing for less money than tbey could a year ago tbis fact is 10 plain thak- argument Is unnecessary to enforce it Oreencastle, Ind.. Star Press. 1 In its account of the recent election in Corvallla the Times gives an incident that ought to make every thinking man top and consider his ways : A different scene waa when young Adam Bumbarger offered to vote at the lower ward, and his vole waa challenged on the ground that he had served a term in the pent- tent'ary. The question of whether or not he had been pardoned out arose, and full five minutes was spent in examining the law. He read the book himseff si lently, and those who looked on could not help feel a pang rf pity for the man whose own act placed him in a petition for the time extremely disagreeable. A big crowd stood around, and when it was finally decided that he waa entitled . to no vote, Bumbarger left the place with celerity. It was aa incident that re minded those who saw it that the peni tentiary should be shunnd, not for the inconvenience of being locked within its dark walls, but for the discredit that comes with freedom. If the income tax law had been one of great benefit to tb rich people of the U. 8. it would never have been declared unconstitutional. That is as plain as a man with a checkered suit. M ighty few laws are ever unconstitutional if satis factory to the capital of the U. S. David B. Hill, in his vicious championship of the interests at the millionaires has for ever alienated himself from the faboring people of the country. All laws seem to tend one way, in a channel which per mits the rich to become richer and the poor to become poorer. When men and not mere political demagogues are elect ad to office there will be laws passed and sustained by a clean supreme court which shall make men give financial support to the government according to their financial capacity. By this the Demo cbat means that if the man with an in come of $1,009 a year pays $.25 taxes, the man with an income of S10.000 should not pay merely ten times as much, but at least twenty times as much, or $500 a year, which he can better atfor t to do than the former $33. The Portland Sun makes the following charge: "Tbe"soldiies" have covertly, though earnestly and, recently, aggres sively worked to capture this convention- Numerous rumors are in the air regarding methods that have been used. It is stated that organisation papers have been religiously forwarded to "golditea" throughout the state with earnest re quests that no independent biwetallists be selected as delegates. Wherever in dependent bimetallists have been select ed, the manipulators of the Portland "goldite" machine have requested their lieutenants throughout the state to, if possible, prevent their attending tbe conventi.m and the securing of their prozi-s to be voted in the interests of thp'golditea.' Star ehana'ier elections have been held. Upholstered dela tions made. Every trick that the hu man mind could invent has been util ized by the "goldites " Now tbe qces tion s, for what?" Sound money, according to Carlisle, is money that tetains its present vurch- iog rower. The more one Egares on tba proposition the more confusing it be comes, aad one hardly knows then what Mr. Carlisle thinks sound money is. It seems to the D&kocbat as if sound money is that kind of mooey that re mains fixed ia value, and while tbe pro ducts of tbe world ftactuate nnder tbe law of sepply and demand the money re mains firm in ita value. Backed by proper !a s silver and gold make each a money. For years they only varied 2 per cent ia value previous to the demon ilizatioa of tbe former. Silver i. a sound mony because the eupplv can never be very large. There is only Go cubic feet of silver money ia the world, hence little danger of its ever being increased so as tocanre a fluctuation a hen made a legal tender like go'd. Oie nt silver and gold. both coiaed tree, the former tbe money of the masses, the latter of tbe wesl'iiy. Let them pall togetber.aod the load will go along firmly and safely. The following from t .e ffaiem Puet is of sv very serious character, aad pats 1 new phase oa tbe character of tbe mem bers of thi last legislature, aad it is no wonder they lol in with railroad com missioners and jobbery generally : Some of tbe rooms ia the state honse are un dergoing a few very neejy repairs in the way of kalsomining and fresoing the ceilings. The rotn occupied by some sf tbe commilties during the last legis lators were left ia a very ILlhy con li tioo ; the carpets were spoiled by tobac co juice and the ceilings m'ned by smoke. It looks very much as though some of the members or tbeir clerks uiiht have been raised in a pig pen if ths way they left tbeir quarters were to be judged Many of the chairs and tables were also broken and rendered nselsss.all of which are of tbe most expensive quality, aod when the next sesiion is called these broken articles will have to be replaced with new ones. The Oamocsat ii not in the habit of referring editorial'y ti theatrical par formsnces ; but the following from the Fargo.of Argnst April 16,fontainsapoint that may cause people to atop and think : If the stage wer devoted to more pro ductions like ".lhamt'' it might, in deed, become the handmaid of religion: and if, like Mr Uainhridgp, mora mana ger thought less of pecuniary reward aud more of the satWtactinn to b- deriv ed from faultless presentation of their stage picture", theater-going would not continue tho doubtful quantity that has made the dramatic business so venture some during the past two years. If there were nioro Auicustus Thomases and less Ous Heeges more "Alabamas" and fewer "Rush Cities," the world would batha better off. Hill calls the people who favor the in come tax law all kinds of naaiei; while some one else puts favorite names to tne men who oppose the law. So it is in refer ence to silver. The United States is far enough advanced in civilization so that men should have the greatest charity for those disagreeing with them. The narrowest men are the selfopionated fellows who concede nothing good in those opposing thein. Rev. Gilson, of Emanuel church, San Francisco, has received several flattering offers to lecture in the east, which he has r- fused, a fact that speaks for the man. Though Rev. Gibson did some peculiar things he is nndcubtedly entirely inno ceutof any connection with the recent terrible murders. ' ukmoobat isn't run to suit you it come sround and tell us how to manipulate thins, and it wid be taken In good part and the compliments re turned by telling you how to run your business more successfully. That Is fair for a fact. SATURDAY NIGHT THOUGHTS. On this Saturday nlgbt there has nothing occurred during the closing week of more importance than the rapid rise of wheat in the Eastern, markets. No matter what the cause or object the im portance is just the same. It displays again some of the old time p.rit that created prosperity. It presents an ex ample of activity that is necessary at this period; it speaks of returning con fidence; it tells of money ready to be launched into enterprises; it says em phatically Hint the country is alright. And it is alright. Wheat is the leading product of the country, tho foundaticn of the staff or life, and as wheat is so you iray look for good times generally. There was a time when a bull proceeding like this made producers feverish and they looked for ail manner of thing, tbe traditional dollar a bushel tor instance; but they have learned from experience, and this year as in nine out of ten they may count for tbe highest price on the first big rise after harvest, and shoold beware lest they keep their wheat too long. Fifty cents in October is worth CO in April or May. Wiib tbe many new foreign fields for the production of this cereal farmers cannot defend upon the prices of years ago; but must accept the new condition of affairs. It may be confidently predicted, though, that wheat will settle down at a steady price at 50 or 60 cents per buslul, xith a spec ulative price above those figures. The first Albany creamery butter came to the DzxocgAr office yetterday. This telle of one feature in the future diversified farming of this county. It should mean a good deal. Creamery butter, under the processes in use, is universally good ; home made butter in six cases out of ten is poor. Producers often get a nominal sum for tbeir bat ter because of it uncertainly. Tbe public wants good butter and that right along. Must people are willing to pay for it, and much more than for bntttr of aa uncertain character. First class creamery butter gets a reputation asy from borne and for the reasons stated w'.ii have a steady demand. The Demo crat predicts a kqoJ sale for A. C. B. all through the Wil.amstte valley. Under tbe co-operative system this will trean a steady cash income for tae farmtr sending milk to tbe creamery. We are particularly pleased with il.ia as a per manent ins'.itution here and hope to see l grow until at least the product of 10(0 cows comes to its doors eveiy djr. The Chautauqua Idea. A letter from the assistant commis sioner of the general land cilice to Repre sentative Ellis conveys the information that the herding or pasturing of sheep is prohibited in the Cascade range forest reserve, aa being considered injurions to the herbage and undergrowth. What under the sun does the government want of the herbage and undergrowth. Today is Queen Victoria's birthday. She has reigned without interruption since 1837, or 58 years. It has been ru mored, probably without foundation, that she will abdicate tomorrow. Were she to do so Edward Vll would be king of England. The Scio Press alleges that a resident of that city holds a note against an Al bany church on which are the names of several prominent citizens, and that the note is not assessed at all. and asks the assessor to attend to it.
