Siaioi's Accidkst. Wednesday a
Sclo Hverv team, being driven by a driver
from the stable, was In the vicinity of the
circus elephants when the horse became
frightened and ran away. Coming to a
one horse buggy In which Mrs E C Sidle
macher.lnfant child and Mr Morgan were
sitting, the team divided, one home going
each side, lifting the buggy from the
ground and throwing It and the occupant
over on to the ground. Mrs Stcllcmachcr
had a collar bone broken, but the baby and
Mr Morgan were uninjured. The buggy
wa badly mashed. Dr J 1 Wallace at
tended the injured woman and set the
bone. One of the livery team had a leg
broken. We are Informed it wa on the
run.
Cold, A Democrat man examined a
ther.Ttometer Tuesday that marked 30 de
cree above aero and wa on Its way down
ward, with a prospect of reaching I) de
gree above aero.' Pretty cold that for
summer weather. It is easily accounted
for by the fact that it t n the Albany Ice
Work connected with one o' the pipe.
The machinery ha been running iu good
shape, and Ice will soon be turned out In
cake oMxi-'i feet and eight inches thick,
at the rate of four or five tons a day. It
take three day to get the firt Ice"; but

Badly Demoralized. "Thing over

demoralized. The other day the patten

stone work on the Brownsville woolen
mills was let to Mr P Y Duncan Instead of j
UMrWE Baer. Both gentlemen bid
the same, $4.50. The stone used will be
from the quarry of Mr Frank Wood, as
fine a stone as there is in the Northwest.
Frank Wood put In a bid to make the walls
of the woolen mills of stone for the sum of
$5700, while CasaeU'i bid for brick walls li
$4844, a difference only of $856.

in the South Coaat railroad circulated, in

One hundred dollars was the price charged
for hauling a full load and thirty- five to
fifty dollars for a trunk was the regular

from the Jaxrni: "Mr Cooper, of the
Oregon Pacific surveying corps, arrived
down on the train this afternoon. lie
comes looking up a projected extension ot
the lines if the Oregon Pacific from a
point near Sclo to Salem. He I being
shown over the city and introduced by Mr
Brink, a heavey contractor on the Oregon
Pacific. The proposed route would leave
the main lines of tho Oregon Pacific at
Scio Junction, following a northwesterly
course until the valley of the Willamette
should be reached Thi would lie fol
lowed as close to the river a practicable,
until Salem was reached. The road will
enter this city from the south."

an insufficiency of fund the Signal Service j
bureau have written Mr Briggs of thi
city, in reference to discontinuing the of
fice, or modifying the service, using Al
bany only part of the year regularly and
the remainder only in case of storms, etc.,
but requests a statement in reference to
the va ue of the service here. The Dim
OCR AT knows it to be appreciated and that
great reliance is placed on it by the farm

fice, Portland, Or, For week ending June
15th, 1889 :
The temperature ha been above the
normal from 8 t ti degree. There was
no rainfall during the week. The sun
shine was abeve the average, The viml
un to Friday were northerly, warm and
dry, In sections being almost a "norther,"
on Friday and Saturday they were south
erly. The effect ot these conditions on the
wheat crop has been mot Injurious, cs
peclally In Eastern Oregon. In the Wll
lamette Vallev the fall wheat continues
Its promising outlook, while In localities
the spring wheat! slightly Injured Along
the Coast the excellent crop prospect con
tinue. IntneUmpqua Valley, more than
an average wheat crop will be harvested.
In the Rogiie River Valley the crop Is to
a considerable extent Injured.ln many ec
tlon however an average crop will he re
alized, while In other sections the crop Is
badly "fired" and grain that looked well
two week ago will have to be cut for hay.
In the Lake region much ot the wheat I
only from 6 to 13 Inches high and Is turn
Ing yellow, it will hardly make hay. The
most discouraging reports a to the conai.
tlon ot the wheat come from Eastern
Oregon and especially from Wasco county.
Sample ot wheat received at this office
from the vicinity ot The Dalle show that
the head are roasted and the entire stalk
cooked. Two week ago thl region
prom lied a large ; ield and now the crop is
hardly nulled for hay. In Morrow county
some ot the spring grain is Injured, but as
a whole little grain is Injured ; the bulk of

what less than wa anticipated earlier in
the season. Through Gilliam Co. a hot
east wind blew d jrlng the fore part of the
week, and the result Is that many wheat
fields standing. waist high are nearly com
pletely ruined, except for hay. The dam
age is not general and a good yield is yet
expected. In Umatilla Co., especially
around Veion, the dry, hot winds have
damaged the wheat. r"rom the Indln
Reservation, nnd the east end ot the coun
ty reports of little or no damage to the
wheat are received. White there I a
gloomy outlook for an Immense yield, yet
for the State a a whole there will be an-
average yield. Crop do not fall In Ore
gon, there I no receid ot any real drouth
and yet there I a possibility of rain com
ing and partly retrieving the wneatcrop.
While the wheat prospect are not so good
the other creps show signs ot large yield.
Barley and oas promise large yields. Tne
fruit ciop will be the largest feathered in
the State. The strawberry crop i about
over in Western Oregon, while In the Eat
em part of the State it I now being gath
ered. Vh cherries are yielding enormous
ly. Berries are plentiful. Wheat harvest
will begin about the 35th Inst. Hay is
Welding well and Its harvest nearly over.

pil to first learn to write by wing pen and
Ink ( but by using a pencil and paper or
late. He would first teach hi pupils the
various movement, next the formation of
letters, paying practical attention to prin
ciples, slsnts, etc. He dally rnqulie care
tul practice in penmamdilp, believing that
practice make peifect. Thl discussion
was further continued by all teacher pres
ent, after which the Institute adjourned to
meet In the same place at 1 :.V p.

board showing the different organs of the
body, and their relations to each other.
The Prof made soma of these drawings on
the board which well Illustrated thl meth
od of Instruction. He stated that he would
not resort to the use of the tent book In

would introduce suitable oral Instruction.
