A Portland Affair.- At the late elec
tion Henry E. McGinn, republican, was re
elected district attorney for Portland. For
some time prior to the election charges of
unfaithfulness and official laxnesa were
brought against McGinn. It seems that
on last Monday evening Rev. Ezra Has.
kell, of the Plymouth Congregational
church, at a public meeting, charged Mc
Ginn with having bribed voters on election
day. This having been communicated to
McGinn, seemed to. arouse him, and meet
ing the reverend gentleman on the street
Wednesday evening, he proceeded to
pommel him, making several contusions
and abrasions about the head and face.
Mr. Haskell in an interview after the as
sault declared that he was fully prepared
to prove all the charges he made. It is to
be hoped he will have the opportunity to
do HO.

Mr. Rumor. We hope the fo'.lowing

Sumner, was killed by a singular accident
on Monday last.the news of which has just
reached this city, in company with Coun
ty Commissioner J. C. KincaUl and five
others he was In camp at Lonamever's
springs near the foot of Mt. Rainer. While

et, was discharged, and the ball entered his
neck. Death ensued shortly after. The
company decided to bury the body at the
Slace as it was Impracticable to bring It to

The Joist Lease.
Nkw York, June 14.-11 is reported In
Wall street that the joint tease of the Ore
gon Railway At Navigation Company's
property by the Union and Northern Paci
fic railroad companies has been abrogated.
It ts hinted in some quarters that the union
Pacific detected its associate In a violation
of the compact, and has thrown up the
whole agreement. The Union Pacific rail
way, through the Oregon Short Line, leas
ed the property In April, 1887, for ninety
nine years on a basis of 6 per cent annual
dividends on the stock, and last fall it ad
mitted the Northern Paetfic to participa
tion In the lease. The Oregon company
was immediately restrained In the Oregon
courts from executing the joint lease.

from Stevens county, Karieaa, stale that
the entire populations of the towns of.

patrolmen met' Monday, and a lively fua
ilade ensued. Their horses were left dead
on the field, and it Is not known whether
anybody was killed or not. The situatkm

Death of the Knperar.
BkVi.in, June 15. The emperor died at
11 o'clock this morning at Potsdam. A
bulletin Issued an hour before the emper
or died said that he had been lying for some
time iu a slight slumber, broken by wake
ful intervals, during which he showed dis
tinct signs of consciousness. He gave no
signs of suffering. His pulse and breath
ing were very weak. There had been no
material change in his condition during
the night. All the members of the imper
ial family remained at the castle during
the night.
More Storms.
Arlington, Or., June 15. A wind
storm and cloud burst struck near Lexing
ton, Morrow county, killing three persons
and wounding a dozen or more. About 2
o'clock the stage driver was at Petty 's place,
where he had unhitched his team. The
wagon was washed down Willow creek
about fourteen miles. Seven buildings
were wrecked In Lexington.

Albany saloon-keeper says the Man About
Town hasn't any sense, and Is a blockhead
generally .... We hear a great deal about
Albany's future. Some of the emarks
made are inclined to be wild and exagger
ated on the up grade. Others not wild
enough. The M. A. T.ls not a full fledged
enthusiast on anything ; but in the matter
of Albany's growth he has baloon like
Ideas to a certain extent. Should the Ore
gon Pacific be pushed through rapldily our
ideas are rather exalted as to the city's
growth ; and anyway it has an advantage
this Saturday night that is bound to make
it a fine inland city with a population of
not less than ten thousand fn five years
from now. There are those here who will
be saying in a few years, "Well, I was a
fool for not buying then". . . . At the end of
this rainy week we hear many j remarks
about too much moisture, but watch for
the harvest. . . .An Albany gentleman say a
his wife has put up about 300 cans of fruit,
attacking the cherries by the bushel. Who
can. surpass this A large amount of
farm machinery has left Albany during
the week. The M. A. T. beseeches the
owners to keep their machines in out of the
rain and well oiled. A binder might just
as well be run ten years as to be cast aside
in three or four.

Ennis was likewise taken before Justice
Humphrey, and received a fine of $40. for
the part he played in the saloon fight.
Neither Ennis nor Reed can pay the fines
and will have to submit to about a months
imprisonment. These two cases should be
lessons to the young men of Linn county
that they must behave themselves or get
the punishment they deserve. Our ad
vice is to keep out of the saloons entirely
and vou wont get in the grip of the law,
which in this case certainly ground out
just about the right verdict.

gent enough and honest enough to set forth
things as they are." This Is eminent y true
for, so fur us that paper is concerned, while
It may be intelligent enough to teli Its
readers what the provisions of the Mill's
bill are, evidence is not lacking to show that
It Is not honest enough to do so. It Is per
fectly safe to .i v that those who have de
pended upon the Orrgonian for a knowledge
of just whut the provisions of that bill are,
all believe that no reduction has been made
upon woolen goods or upon sugar. It has
persistently and willfully misrepresented
the provisions of the hill with reference to
both sugar and woolens. And wc must
say that we Jtnow of 110 class of people, in
Oregon so much in need of a newspaper,
intelligent and honest enough to set forth
things as they are in the Mill's bill, as the
republican party, for that paper continually
teaches them that the Ml'Ps bill makes no
change in the duties on sugar and woolen
goods while putting other articles on the
free list. Scores of republicans dally assert
this to be the fa t.and quote that paper as
authoHty to prove the allegation. That
paper joins daily with others that have no
regard for the truth, I u ch-now m in t; '.Un
democratic party as a f rfce trade party .simp
ly because It favors a reduction of the reve
nues by reducing the tariff .ami In the same
breath calls for a removal of the entire du
ty from sugar. Does not this make thi-t
paper a freetrader ? If not, then it acts in
a very dishonest w ay In calling democrats
free traders.

Last week the provision of the tariff bill
placing salt on the free list was up before
Congress for cor. side ration. Here was a
fine opportunity to teat the sincerity of men
who profess such tender care and solicitude
for the Interest of farmers and dairymen.
As soon as the clause was read putting that
article on the free list, Burroughs of Michi
gan, republlcan,was on hi feet with a mo
tion lo strike out the clause. The motion
was supported by the republicans, but was
voted down by the democrats. During the
discussion of the motion Mr. W biting, of
Michigan, a democrat, and a manufacturer
of salt on a Urge ca!c,earnctly supporUd
the move for putting salt on the free list,
urging that salt was abundantly able to
stand alone. Here were two tests. A test
of the sincerity of the republican profes
sion of care for the Interest of the farmer.
They could give him cheap salt, but being
put In the scales the mcmbcrsof that party
were found wanting. The other test wa the
sincerity of democrats in their tariff reform
movement in the interest of the consum
ing classes. They united as one man to give
the people clteapsalt, and Mr. Whiting sup
ported the move to keep faith with the
people. And so It Is in every aspect of the
case. The democrat In Congress are with
the people, and the republicans in that bo
dy are with the protected monopolies f
the country. Mr. Whiting had the oppor
tunity to cxemplyfy the true meaning of
American political manhood, and he did it
manfully and patriotically. Such is the
difference between a man who labors in
the interest of the whole mass of the peo
ple.and one devoted to the interests of the
few at the expense of the many.

"ultra protection." Taking its own col

tle trouble In proving that It does not be

be an easy task to prove from the columns
of that paper that It has promulgated every
phase of the tariff question fromfultra pro
tection" as one extreme, to ultra free trade
as the other. There is only one question
of doubt among the people o to the atti
tude of that paper on the subject of the

a Federal Department of Labor is a recog
nition on the part of Congress of the pro
priety and necessity of dealing particular
