FRIDAY MARCH 10, 1882
STATU IT KM,
Isaac Davis of North Yamhill died
at his home on tho 21th uit. of eaocer.
Me was an old and highly respected
citizen ef Yamhill county.
Smelt are running heavily in tho
Columbia river. They are of fine
quality. There are two tons of them
lying at the dock at Sigie CUff Seme
few spring salmon havo also been
caught at Westport. .
The Oregon Bhart lAue, it it
t Uough will be completed from
13 ranger to Baker City by next year.
We understand that sixty-four miles
of rails have been laid from U ranger
west, and seventy miles of griding
finished beyond that point ready for
the rails. East Urejotian.
On Friday last, Mr. A. B. Cow
atock, hoad miller of the Imperial
mills, and who has been connected
with the establishment sinee the time
it was owned by the lato Mr. Harvey,
met with a vej? severe accident that
came very near being a fatal one. Mr.
Oemstock had gone into the base
ment of the mill to fix a lighter rod,
and being close to tho shaft of the wa
ter wheel, ids ceat became entangled
and he was wound around it, but
managed to hold on by a support and
cry for help. He was heard and tho
water was instantly shut off. Mr. U.
D. Wilson in the meantime rushed
down and severed Mr- t'otustock's
clothing from the shaft Mr. Com
stock's beard had become wound up
with his clothing and a portion of it
cnt with the clothing. When extri
cated from his dangerous position
his hand was found to be severely
cut, his side considerably abrased and
his face bruised, but no injuries were
received. It was a narrow escape and
Mr. Corns tock's many friends will be
glad te learn that it was no worse.

Sam. Priee, a wood-sawyer whom
almost everybody knows, was last
Thursday night March 2nd. the vic
tim of a most ridiculous practical jeke.
It seam- that the festive Samuel,
who is only about 45 years old, be
came enamored of a pretty young
girl who occupies tho position of
chambermaid at the ftiehui :! house,
which fact was well known among tbe
boarders of the caravansary. The
girl on account of the difference in
their ages and social position did not
reciprocatd his manly affection, but
allowed him to continue his devotion--.
Last night an effeminate looking
waiter named Jasper, who works in
the house was dressed in a neat-fitting
lady's costume, and when Trice
made his usual evening call presented
himself in the placo of tho chamber
maid. Price did not notice the de
ceptlon in the partially darkened
room, and was overjoyed when on
pressing his suit as usual, the sup
Dosed chambermaid contented to
thatr marriage. Price being a man
of business, wanted the nuptials con
summated immediately, to which
"she" also consented. James Woods,
a driver in the O T Co s employ, who
had previously dressed in fern i!o at
tire, acted as bridesmaid; James Hall
an old Californian, was palmed off as
a justice of tho peace, while Jame
Johnston, the originator of the seli
was best man and master of ceremo
nies. The rite was performed in
room 21 with due sslemnlty, every
one enggged in it playing his part
so well as to completely dupe the
overjoyed Samuel. After the sealing
kiss and subsequent congratulations,
the bride and groom retired, which
was no sooner done than "she" ran
into the hali screaming, and as had
been planned, brought a crowd of
prooaojy iorty people to too room,
who set Samuel completely wild with
their jeers and veils. Price did not
sty much, but was seen a short time
after with four revolver., two breech
loading double-acting rides and a
cannon in his vest pocket. He was
inquiring of a stranger whether he
liad seen a party by the name of
Johnston. Orejoniun.
The following curious piece of cern-
potition was placed upon the black
board of a teacher's institute in Ver
mont, and a prize of a Webstet 'a dic
tionary efiared to any one who could
read it and pronounce every word cor
rectly. The book was not carried off,
however, as twelve was the lowest
number of mistakes made in pronuncia
tion: "A sacrilegious son ofBeJial, who
uffsrod from bronchitis, having exhaus
ted all his nuances in erder to make good
the deficit, resolved to ally himself to
a comely, lenient and docile youug lady
ot the Malay or Caucasian race. He
accordingly purchased a calliope and
coral neck-lace of a chameleon hue, and
ocnriug a suite of room at a principal
hotel, he engaged a waiter as his coad
jutor; he then despatched a letter in the
most unexceptional ca'ligi -aphy extant,
inviting the young lady to a matinee.
She revolted at the ilea, refused to
consider herself axcnSceable te his de
sires, and sent a polite note of refusal;
on receiving which he procured a oar
bine and a bowie-knife, said he wenld
not now forge fetters hymeneal with
the queen, went to an isolated spot,
severed his juu'ar vein, and discharg
ed the contents of his carbine into his
abdomen. T! e lebris were removed by
the coroner." The following words
were mispror ounced Sacrilegious, Be
lial, bronchi is, exhausted, finances,
deficit, comr ly lenient, docile. Malay,
cailiope, chameleon, suite, coadjutor,
calligraphy, matinee, sacrificable, car
bine, hym nca1, isolated, jugular and
debris."

Dr. B!is?, since the death of Presi

his practice was all broken up, and
that he had been a sufferer financial

In a certain city a laboring man
leaving a saloon saw a costly carriage
and a pair standing in front, occuplcd
by two ladles elegantly attired, con

rolled away he said to tho deal r :
'Whose establishment is that ?" "It

mechanic bowed his head a MMNfil
in deep thought and looked sad ;
with the energy ofu man suddenly
aroused by some startling flash, he
said :
"I see it J I see it !"
'See what ?" queried tho dealer.
"See where for years my wagts

carriage, for those horses and gold
mounted harnesses, for the rttkl an J

The money I earned that I should

shall have the benefit of wages, and,

more drinking now than before it

I am now better prepared than ever befoie to
negotiate loans on good improved farm lands.
The departure of my late partner has not
interfered with my connection with th firm
for which Stewart & Grey were loaning money and
I can obtain loans on more liberal terms than over.
If you must have money, remember that I can get
it for you.
