OH TO ILK.
Let those who think that women,
girls, boys or any one else will do to
milk try the experiment with such
and good milkers, and they will see
that it requires a good, strong, care
fal, quiet par on to make a success
In milking, and to keep up the flow
of milk. A man who bad done his
own milkiug hired a boy te do it ; he
shrunk the milk of the cow one-third
in two weeks, when the owner again
resumed the milking, and in 2 weeks
got the same amount as before the boy
had doue the milkine. Then he let
a hired man milk the cow, who in 2
weeks shrunk the milk 10 per cent ;
and in two "vecki mere, the owner
milking again, got as muth as before.
To milk, close the foreflnger and
thumb around the teat high up; make
a downward motion, tightening the
grip and forcing out the milk ; then
let go the hold, keeping the thumb
and linger In circle; carry up the hand
and press it smartly against the udder
and close and pull down as before,
and so on until the cow is clean. The
philosophy, if any, is to give as near
as may be the same motion that the
calf does in sucking. Many a good
eow is partially despoiled of her good
qualities in consequence of being im
properly milked. Above ail thing
never let anybody but an experienced
hand milk the heifers or young cows.
It is surely a mistake in whs it cul
ture, or in fact with regard te any
crop, to sow inferior seed. Like be
gets like. Weakness and disease are
propagated in the plant world vary
much as they are transmitted from
parent to child In the world of human
beings. The greatest pal as should be
taken te procure the choicest seed
that oan possibly be had. It will pay
the farmer who depends upon his
growing of seed te cut out the best
portions of a net J when there is a per
ceptible difference, and devote them
to this important use. Indeed, it is a
wise policy te select the earliest and
finest heads, and from these te "grew
seed. It is well to obtain a change'.ef
seed from time to time, as successive
sowing or planting in the same soil
and climate seems to Induce, more
mx less, degeneracy- The farmer should
never grudge a little extra outlay in
the purchase of choice seed. Such
outlav is pretty sure te be well reward

Much of the rapid development in
the South is owing to the fact that
since the close of the war and the abo
lition of slavery the large plantations
have been, in many instances, divid
ed into smaller farms, to the great
benefit of the agricultural interests.
From the statistics of the last census
we find, by comparing the census
figures of 1860 and 1880, that the
number of farms in Alabama have in
creased from 55,128 to 134,865 ; in
Georgia from 62,003 te 138,636 ; in
Florida from 6568 to 28,468; in Sonth
Carolina from 33,171 to 95,864. These
figures show how rapidly the large
landed estates of former days have
been divided into smaller holdings,
which, of course, are in a great ma
jority ef cases falling into the hands
of the former slave population. This
works a double benefit. It gives the
people an interest in the land and in
the stability of the institutions of the
country, and makes them less liable
to become the dupes of designing per
sons ; and it also renders mere thor
ough the cultivation of the soil.
This subdivision of the land, there
fore, is desHnad to do more than any
thing else to restore tho physieal and
political prosperity of the South. The
same kind of a dividing up Is also to
be greatly desired in California.
VARIETY I FOOD
Almost ati domestic animals, as
well as human baings, require a va
riety in diet, and yet some horses, if
a sudden change is made from cats
or barley to corn, are liable to the bel
lyache or colic. When feeding bar
ley, as is generally the case in this
country, a variety is made by giving
a few am a 11 potatoes or carrots week
ly. Fowls, swiae, cattle and horses
are all kept in a more healthy condi
tion and much more free from disease
when a variety of food is given. In
the Eastern States, where fodder, hay
and coarse feed are dear, and seme
times scarce, money and feed are sav
ed by grinding the grain and cutting
the hay or straw fed to horses. By
the cutting of feed for two teams, to
six months enough feed may be sav
ed to pay for the cutter. While a
team in eating cut enough for the
next feed, water it to moisten and
destroy the dust Have your corn,
barley or oats ground, and with it
mix bran or shorts ; mix the bran or
aborts and the ground grain together
about one-third bran and two-thirds
ground grain four quarts is enough
for a feed ; this should also be moist
ened and mixed with the cut straw
or hay, and be allowed to remain in
8Mk from one feed to another. ,This,
with the potatoes and carrots, will
keep your horses Wealthy and in good
condition.
Rotation in crops is demonstrated
as being not enly best, but demanded.
The continual growing aud gathering
from the same field a harvest of the
same or kindred product will in due
time derive the soil in that field cf
the ability to produce that especial
article, as it has taken from the soil
all that is necessary for the produc
tion of that crop, and either fertilizers
must be supplied or the field will be
come wholly worthless, save for some
other and entirely different kind of
product.
