Last Suuday morning a Chinaman csmc to
Marshal Hint and informed him that an
other Celestial was dying in the back part of
the old Chinese barracks iu tho rear of Sen
ders and Sternberg's stare. Mr. Hunt went
down and found that it was so. Thero the
poor heathen laid, in a part of the building
which had been used a a hog pen, without any
bed, or in tact anything over er under him
but his own scanty clothing. Aid arrived
too late, and the poor nnfortuuate fellow
miserably: periahsd from disease and expos
ure a ftiW moments after he was discovered
by the Marshal. It was soon ascertained
that he had been lying ill at "Little Jim's"
stora fur some tiaio, and not getting better
that Chinese dignitary and one of hu men
carried him down to this pig pen in the rear
of another Chinese den, the eyeniag before,
and left him there to die. Coroner Davis
empanelled a jurvconsUting of tho fullowiug
persons : tleo. Humphrey, E. R. Skipwortb,
R. A. Stratford, I. G. Denny, B. W. Cun
diff and K. A. Parker. Witnns testified
to the circumstances stated above, and Dr.
J. L. Hill, after examining the body testi
fied that the death of the deceased wss
caused by dropsy of the heart. which bad
been hurried to the fital termination by ex
posure, and the jury rendered a verdict in
accordance with this testimony. The body
was buried on Sabbath, afternoon, by order
of the Coroner, but not a single Chinaman
attended.
"Little Jim" was promptly arrested Sab
bath morntu,r, on oomplaiat of tha Cbinsmam
in the rear of whe ,ruw tht body W.lt
fonrjil. and on M outlay .' was tried be fote Re
corder Halter cHi a charga of manslaiighter.
He admitted that he auted in carrying 0?
the Chinaman, (who, by the way, was his
eoosin), and coiieeot y the Itrcordcr
bound him over to tw tit action of the grand
jury. His bond were placed at $-50, and
M. S. and Arch Monteitb gave the necessary
hail, and ho was released. For tcveral years
he has worked at Monti ith's mil's, and is
considered a very gncd, rexpectablo, average
Chinamsn, but tha is no excuse for the bru-
'tal way in which he treated his countryman.
They are very superstitious and do not like
to live in a house where a death has occurred,
and, of course, do not eutuidcr it wrong to
bundle a sick comrade out into the etreet to
die when they tluuk the chscces of his re
covery are slim. Section 507 of tha Oregon
statute teems to dUee of Jim's case :
If anv Terson ahall. in the commission of
an unlawful act, or a lawful act wit host due
caution er circumspect'on, involuntarily kill
another, such person snail be deemed guilty
of manslaughter.

The friee ef Wheat.
The San Francisco Journal oj Commr4 of
the 18th aaye that the tut plus ef wheat this
.ton in the livilixod countries is only 17,-
474,300 bushels, and that this is a small snd
comparatively unimportant surplus, and it
leaves no fears at to ths future of tho wheat
market An ex ocas of eight per cent In the
quantities imported by importing countries
would cause it to vanish utterly.
But these countries all produce more or
lass wheat themselves. France this yrar
produces !KJ,1C,000 bushels, and m-edi3i,-0-16,409
buahelt more this harvest yer.
Eogbutd produces ooe half her need', so that
an increase in consumption of 4 per cent in
importing countries would utterly destroy
the surplus. Again if we take into account
the producing countries, it is evident that
an Increase 01 a small aimmut. alwut one
er cent, would bo enough ; that is U oay,
that in a given number of days a man would
eat 101 pounds of bread he now eat
