THE BEST OF ALL THE HILD nOU OF lDl.l Those who have formed their con ception of pi? exclusively upon the tame pig of the civilized sty, have no adequate idea of the free wild pijj of the Indian jungle. Like the North American Indian, the pi? is delmsed by contact with civilization, llo In comes cowardly, weak, dirty, and a prey to an inordinate thirst for swill. The distance between the tame Indian of Saratoga, who steals chickens and wallows drunken in the gutter, ami the fierce warriorof the western plains is not greater than that which sepa rates the despised pig of civilization from the wild and fearless quarry ol the East Indian pig sticker. The lat ter pig, whose ppirif has never been broken with pig yokes and vho.e moral nature has not leeii poisoned with swill, id one of the bravest in habitants of the jungle, and has been known to attack and put to rout the "majestic elephant and tho ferocious tiger. The full name cf the Kiwt Indian pig is Sus intlii'us, though no one ex cept a punctilious $cien:i:lo person ever calls him by it. Among begin niners in the art of pig kicking ho is sometimes magnilcqucutly described as a wild boar though he is very ofien a wild sow ; but pig slickers ol reputation uniformly call him a pi or a hog. ,S"s inJiiug often grows tt the length of four feet and eight or ten inches, and reaches the height of three feet or even tony incl.es, at the shoulder. When full grown h strength is enormous, and in speed he will sometimes rival the fastest Ara bian horse. He enters upon exist ence in a striped state ; subsequently he becomes brown; when in the prime of life he affects a dingy bluck color and when old he is gray and grizzled At no period am he be honestly called a hancUomc or a graceful animal : im his courage and tenacity of life demand our respect. In point of teeth the tame pig ha s.idly deteriorated. The wild loar f India, which is the type of the bar baric pig of all ages, is armed wi'h loug, semi-circul r tusks. Those in the lower jiw sometimes utfaiti the lenglh of eight or nine inches. Thry curve outward and upward, and th . edges are kept sharp by the pig coustant itabit of .scouring thorn asrainst the tusks of the upper jaw, The swiftness and power with whicl he uses those tusks to carve an enemy are almost incredible. A huntingdog i frequently cut nearly in two by a single stroke of a lxm's tusks, and horses and men are ocasionallv kilkd by boars which have become tired being hunted, and which try to infu a little variety into theaffair by hunt ing their enemies. The quantity of pig iron smelted was about 6,000,000 tons, and of coal brought to the surface about 134,000,000 tons. Of other ores and minerals raised there were produced ." 1,000 tons cf copper, 70,000 tons of lead, 3,000,000 tons of porcelain clav, and 2,500.000 tons of salt. Altogether there are 3877 coal mines in the Uni ted Kingdom, of which only forty-Eeven are in Ireland, and the whole of these odly produced 1 29,000 tons of coal, or about one six-biindreillh part of the quantity obtained from a. sing'e half riding of Yorkshire.
