On Monday of loot week, one of the con victs named James Cook, effected his escape from the penitentiary, says the SUiltsman. While the men were ail at work as usual Conk watched his chances, and scaling the stockade struck for the neighboring wood. The nearest euard. Bell, observed him climb the fence and ordered kim to halt, and upon his refusing to do so, fired at liim, but with out effect. He tired the second lime and failed to hit him, whereupon Fletcher and A, ntoine Ijelore, two other guards alio opened UP a brisk musketry. Although eight or ten shots were fired they only served to augment his sped, and he soon found ait niter among the thick timber. The alarm was given lm. mediately and the woods scoured in every direction but none of the trailers conld get any clue as to where he had gone. But he has since been caught and now languishes behind the bar again. He says that after his esca;e he hid in the brush near the Peni tentiary, where he stayed all day Tuesday. Some of the men searching for Liin passed within twenty feet of him while he lay secret ed in a jle ,f brush. All day Thursday he traveled south, and at nih slei,t ja a ban near Jaerson, IJere he stole . a blanket, sad aiittiu? it ut. wade himself a pair of Oi' oralis, which covered his utriped pants, Friday morning about 6 u'ulock he called at the house of Mr. Miller, of Millers station, and aiked for something to eat. After eating he started away when one of tiie men present jfuticeJ, through a hole in the blanket, his etriped pants. They ordered him to baltf hut he started to run, when Walter Johnson auj C'liaa. 4. Miller, ho happened to be at ilji house, give cha.-e. After lutiuir. about a mjle they procured hurse and thot gun aud then ran their man dorn easily. e wss then brought to this city and taken down to the' penitentiary on the noon train. v- fo rarcats aaf Dlrerlers, - We take pleasure in directling the atten tion of parouts and directors of school dis tricts to an essay entitled "Teacher's Trials" which appears ou the first page of this issue of the Democrat. It was written by Miss Mary Gaston, an experienced leachcr, who recently arrived in this county from Illinois, and read by her before the Linn County 'Jfeacfcer.'s Institute, held in Ilalsey a few weeks ago. Vhile didiuiatjng the trials of teachers the writer gives a great deal of good, wholesome advice. Three hundred tons of iron for this road camo up on tho Orejan, which arrived at Portland last Monday evouing, and it will all be laid down here ly tho time it is needed, tho first of it probably arriving this week. This will bo one of tho easiest roads to build in our valley, as it is just a gradual ascent from hero to Lebanon, not a single hill uor water courso intervening; between tho two places. From the hill Wk of tho F.Ik, ins' place, one milo from thin city, tho road will run on an air lino tho entire distance to Iebanou. Wo hoio tho farmers along tho line of tho road will be liberal with tho com. pauy in granting them tho rijjht of way. Scott, of Liun Ku:;ine IV X Z, and for Assistant, Fred Uralf, of Uescue Hook and Ladder Co. Ko. 1. Mr. Scott was opposed in bis company by Wm. II. Hustou, present Foreman of tho Hose ia that com pany, but secured tho nomination by four cr live majority. These nominations are good, and. if elected, these gentlemen we feel sure will make officers of which the IVpartntcnt may fuel proud: Last night Albany Engine Co. Xa, I held their regular monthly meeting, at which time they would also make nomina tions, but our paper went to press before the result was known. The nomination of Fred (raff for Assistant K:i"iueer would be en dorsed, for Fred is an exempt member of Ko. but a new Chief would be brought out so as to make the fight interesting. Uescuo Hook and I-adder Co. X 1 will told their meeting to-night, and will also probably tale some action in regard to the nominations. Lravlas I. Last week AL lloro aud l"..L Cox left this city for the States, the former going to Streator, Illinois, where his wife i now lying ill, she having lately received a stroke of paralysis. I'd Cox gs to Kansas .to dis pose of some land, and will try to return in time to get in a Ilepublican vote at the June election, but on account of the rapid shoalisg of the Columbia river bar we think it prob able he won't "make the riffle," at least we hope he will not. His wife w ill stop at her father's in Polk county until his return. Denver Hackleaian started for Camp Creek, Wasco county, last Monday, and V. K. Price and Mrs. Hackleman will started for the same place yesterday. Abe Hackleman has remained over there through the entire w inter caring for the stock. Cxraratoa ! Aalorta. . A communication from Rev. Wolf informs us that the fast and commodious steamer Lurline bas beea chartered for an excursion from this city to Astoria, to leave here ou Tuesday, May 25th, and arrive here on the evening of Saturday, May 29th. The Ladies' Brass Band is to accompany the excursion iats. The fare , for the round trip will be $5.00. Tickets will soon be on sale here aud at the principal towns between this city and Portland. Au lleia for the Ladle. The sole agency for t!)e sale of the cele bra ted Foster kid gloves in this city, is Fox, Baum tt Co., and as they have quite a stock of other brands of two three and four-button kid gloves on baud they have concluded to sell them off during the next twenty days, closing them out entirely to make room for new invoice direct from the Foster factory. To do this they have put tho price down to 75 ernU per pair. Ladies should call early and secure a fit. fieias; lo Intlrpeadenee. Oar eld friend Ilsrry D. TIU KKW BOSSET. Kew lmunets are so similar in outline to tlw? of the wiutar, that th dosira (or dis tinction whioh teems inherent in the human breast, must needs find scope in other direc. tions. So, in consequent, there is often times the most lavish piling together of ex treme colors that evor you saw, while manu facturers of flowers, although sometimes con tent with giving them to ui in patterns copied nflor nature have oftener prepared t go far beyoud her modost dictates and thus we see enormous red or yellow daisies, asters twice the siao of those that garden over produced, eta, etc. There is strong partiality for wide open many petalod flowers nd therefore any variety coming under such appellation is sought for. Fuliago is at discount and though not abandoned, is but sparingly inter mixed aud for the most part in unpretentious hades of groon. Flowers in consuuonoo, aro massed iu rows or great benches, with stariug effect, but we have grown aowustomed to theso pronounced dispositions and scarcely look at tliuin. Vet toning down of oxtrsv. agant results is oftentimes produced by soft scrgo silk in ono delicate shade throughout or by tho use of solid colored ribbon. Other silks aud ribbons however are extremely bright aud in varied combinations as to color. Striped ribbons are quite fashionable and dots, both in self color and in gay coutrasts aud of all sizes are much in vogue. Combination suits are genuine combina tions, for the two materials are united throughout, and this to the disadvantage of a skirt of one fabric and overdress of another. The latter idea is at most wholly cxeladed except in case of some elegant, light material, but even here, the skirt should correspond in tone with what is worn above and there is almost always a unity apparent somewhere. Trimmed skirts and basque are extremely fashionable aud in this style we fiud the Del. phine costume which embodies the latest ideas. Even wash dresses follow, and are shown ready niado with uulined, tight-fitting basque or half fitting jacket which can be belted in. In general, the trimming ou the skirt is so arranged that it can be displaced for washing, but it is of course more conven ient to have a separate overskirtand bur w find the Mabrili which is at once simpla aud graceful. The Gwendoline costumes, suit able for silk or wool is made with a long coat shaped basque and trained shirt on which the drapery U very handsomely disposed and the Croisvtte uaaquo would be quite becoming to a full fiftore as it is long and plain on the aides. For traveling, the Wiudaor red inputs answers the same purpose as an ulster, but it is of newer shape. Wash dresses are eou stantly relieved by ribbon bows and silk or wool costumes aio also adorned in like man ner, but to a limited extent only. Buttons are a favorite addition to the last named vari eties of outfits and are ia such diversity that a t!cscritioa would be never eojiug. At times they ornament postumc of plain wool instead of brocade and form a beautiful and glittering fini.li. Everywhere there is a rage for shirring so much so that it can hardly be overdone or misplaced. But plaiting are likewise very popular. oLovr., tr-. Iu kid gloves tho Harris kid lace top is ex tremely elegant and especially adapted to summer wear, as an opportunity is given (or a display f the beautiful finish at the top. Such finuh is of kid finely cut to resemble lace aud it is so skillfully done that the imi tation is remarkable. It is either of uniform color with the glove, or of white kid contrast ed with some sty tub shade and altogether si by far the most attractive glove shown. The Harris Seamless retains position as a perfect titling and very durable glove. This style is without ornament st the top, long at the wriit antwith delicate self stitching in the back. AntonB modern conveniences, a prominent place matt be given to Cash's woven initial letters which are fast superceding the old marking ink bottle, stamping or any other such inconvenience. They are woven of a useful size in old English type, in Tuikey red color which is perfectly fastaod being all woven on the same sized piece of cloth for the ground, can be sewn on with a machine or by hand. They are made up in s.nail loxc, each containing twelve dozen letters of a kiud. or they can be bought in any quan tity, as they are brought out in loug strips that can bo cjit to suit purchasers. Many a lady allows her clothing or house hold linen to remain nnrnarked, rather than go throagh the process of handling hot irons, ran the risk of spilling ink, etc. By the new method, marking become 4 plcajaot pastime, almost like some piepeot easy rancy wore. liana- some monogram are also seen, Lvov Cartkh. tiesie le rr4letsu .
