Ist Tuesday "Uuelo Johnny" Cilmour
started for this city with three teams loaded
down with flax-seed, carrying about 70 bush-
els on each wagon. Himself and son bod
each driven across the tho bridge over tho
Canal near Mr. Cooper" place, and just as
the third team, driven by Mr. Cassady, was
coming ou the main stringer on tho lower
side of tho bridge broke. The horses had
just gono oil" the bridge onto tho apron, but
when the stringer broke the decking slipped
oil the lower side iuto the water, taking the
wagon with it. This drew the horses back
and threw thorn above the npper stringer,
with the wagon on the other side. Tho bar
no being strong held the horses iu that po
sition with their heels in tho air and their
hoads most of the time under water. Unfor
tunately no one had a kr.ifo, aud the horses
had to remain in that position uutil Kob't
Cilmour ran to a house nenr by and secured
ouo. The bruc$3 was then cut and the
horses set free. They wore found to lie con
siderably bruise! and one nearly dro-ned,
an.l, besides, the wagon was badly deuiutal-i.-.cd,
about half the load of flax lost, also a
good overcoat, some lied quilts which covered
the load, au I several other articles. The
driver, Mr. Cassady, was bruised severely,
and it is a great wonder ho got ofT wuh his
life. He says (and we Wiieve b-.iu) that he
did some lively scratching around when the
wag n, in tlidiug into tho Canal, made the
horses describe a bait circle through tho air
aud then dropped them headforemost into
water with their heels tljuruhiug around bis
bead. The damage re3ultiug from this acci
dent will probably am v. tut to over $100, and
the next question U: who foots the bill! Mr.
Cilmour is certainly eutitl-d to redress, and
and if the couuty keeps up the bridge over
the Csnat the sum will have to coins out of
the treasury.
