Y have talked with nearly all our grain de tiers this wprk as to the price ot' wheat, aud they are still backward in stating what tVy will give for shrivelled graiu. Good, plump grain cau Uo sold for SO ceuta, but there really has been do regular price Bet on rusty cram yet. Mill men will make the price; and tlicy Jo not w ish to commit thorn wives tiutil they bavo ground soma of it and given it a thorough test. Frank rartoti, the superintendent of the Magnolia Mills, in formed us that he had ground some of it, and that good biscuit could be made from the flour, but that wheu making "light bread enough yeast could not lie put into it to make it ratse; he believed that nothing short of a act of jackscrews would raise it, lie thinks that the price for Bh.rivoll.Hl wheat will be about cents per bushel leas than the regular market price for every pound that it tills under the standard of 00 pounds to the bushel, and that wluclr -fighs loss than 5- lbs. will not be purvs.isod. Ha Lrlt I. That gay, gallant and muscular disciple of Eiculapias, lr. Koz-ias, has left us. He "cut a large sized swath" here for a while, and worked into a good practice, but now he has gone. He said when he left that he would be back in a few days, but those days have lengthened into weeks and bis numer ous creditors have levied oa his household property and sold it, and everything seems to indicate that we will no more be blessed with the presence of the noble old Hungari an, for "He who fights sad ru:i away. Kline then moved to reconsider the vote by which HolTron was elected. It carried, and the question recurriug on the original motion was lost. Kline then moved that the Marshal be in structel to appoint a poloceman to act from the 14th inst. to the next meeting of the Council, his salary to be at the rate of $M per mouth. Carried. A petition was received asking that the Council pass an ordinance compelling citizens to keep their cows off the street at night, Referred to tho Committee on Streets and Public Iroperty. The former g.s to that city to enter the celebrated Col lee of Dentistry, and as be expects to take a thorough course in preparing himself for lite dental profession he ill probably re main there two or three years. Miss Laura will remain there as long as her brother, and will turn her attention exclusively to music. both instrumental and vocal. She is already very proficient, and has composed some bean tiful music, some of which has beeu publish ed in San Francisco, but she was not willing to let this opportunity pass of receiving in struction from the most prominent musicians of our country. The following are things housekeepers will want to know: That boding water will re move tea-stains and many fruit-stains; pour the water through the stain and thus pre vent it from spreading over the fabric That ripe tomatoes will remove ink and other stains from white cloth; also from the bands. That a teaspoonful of turpentine boiled with white clothes wi'l aid the whitening process. That boiled starch is much improved by the addition of a little spermaceti or a little salt. or both.or a little gamarabic dissolved. That beeswax and salt will make fi it irons as clean and smooth as glass; tie a lump ot wax in a rag and keep it for that purpose; when the irons are hot rub them with the wax raj then scour with a paper or rag sprinkled with salt. That kerosene will soften boots or shoes which have been hardened by water and render them as pliable as when new. That kerosene will make tin teakettle as bright as new; saturate a woolen rag and rub with it; it will also remove stains from clean varnished furniture. f hNkrjr War la galena. The feast Kailroad. On Friday, Aug. 29th, says the BlwJk, the first rail in Benton county was laid on the track of the W. V. & C. It. Ii., at the inter- section of Jackson and First street. W. B. Hamilton, President of that company, had the honor of driving the first spike. Quite a a crowd had assembled at the point mention- ed. After the spike was driven they were addressed respectively by Dr. Bayley, Col. Kelaay, Hon. Green B. Smith, Br. Green.T. J. Buford and others. We understand that t.'u company will prosecute the work of track-laying nntil all the iron they have on hand is placed in position. This looks like business. , A Sew Dental firm. Dr. E. 0. Smith has sold his dental office in the Odd Fellow Temple to 3. T. Tate, and Mr. Tate and Geo. W. Price have entered into partnership. Mr. Price is a step-son of the late Dr. Tate and is now attending the College of Dentistry at New York City, and has been practicing his profession for seven or eight years. Mr. Tate started this week to enter the same dental institution in New lork, and the omce in this city will conse quently be closed nntil about the 1st of April, at which time Mr. Price is expected to re turn. NS Hack of a Murderer. We see it geiog the rounds of the press that one of the supposed Hager murderers was arrested in this county last week and taken to Oregon City. This is all a mistake, and grew out of the fact tliat a man named Bennett was arrested in this county last Tuesday on a warrant issued from Clacka mas county. . He was simply charged with larceny. Sheriff PilUbury of Oregon City, came up on Thursday of last week and took him down. The corn crop looks splendid, but the wheat nnd oats does not compare with Ore gon. The thermometer baa stood as high as 102 tn the shade for several days; 00 and Olf hat been about the average all summer. Now this is pretty warm for Webfoot chat. I have just returned from an extended tour to New York by way of Niagara Falls. Here I witnessed the grandest sight I ever saw, Echo Canyon not excepted. While there I rode 'down the "inclined railway" to the river aud "shadow of the rock" dressing room below the American Falls. Here we donned the necessary water-proof garments and with competent guide passed under the American Falls. Our party consisted of six gentlemen and five ladies, and aa we passed down the slimy stairway to the walk that leads under the falls the blinding spray and dashing sheets of water seemed to ballte our further advance, but by tuming our backs we were enabled to force our way. When about half way under, thc!adiea and some of the men became frightened and went back, but the rest of ns followed the guide as far as he would go, although at times the water foil upon us in such heavy dashes aa to almost carry u off the walk. After taking stroll over Goat, Luna aud the Three Sister Isl and I passed under the falls again to the "Cave of the Winds. Here one gets the finest view of Niagara. Later in the day I crossed the upper sujmion bridge to the Canada side. This bridge span the river at point where it is one quarter of a mile making tho longest span in the world. It is 200 feet above the water, which can not be fathomed and is known to be over 200 feet deep. Here at this point, Stephen Pier, the great Niagara Falls rope walker gives daily exhibition of his daring feet on the tight rope and flying trapeze 100 feet above the Niagara river. There are two suspension bridge across the river at Niagara, only one mile apart. The lower one is doublo tracked for wagon and Railway. I only stopped at Niagara one day. In the evening I started for New York City, and after spending m few days in that city 1 went to Chicago, and from there to this place. While in Chicago I witnessed a champion game of ttase ball between the Buffalo and Chicago cltrbs. After playing ten inning the score stood 2 to I in favor of the Buffalo. The Gat ran was made by the Chicago in the 8th inning ; then the Buffalo made one in the ninth, and also one in the tenth. Time of game three hours. In all my travel this country here in Illi nois i by far the beat I have seen since I left Oregon. But Illinois is the weediest state I bare passed through. The lane are full of them, some of them reached to the height of 8 to 10 feet I have seen weed around old stack yard that were actually 14 feet high. It ha been very dry here this Summer, So much so that the well are failing all over the country. Hail it been a Wet summer I suppose they would have made raits out of the weed. I shall leave here for Pacific, about the middle of September, and as I will go to St I -on U and from there through to Kansas where I will spend some little time in visit ing relative. I wilt probably not get borne until November. Year truly; W. W, (' nn:i. The Xtet'WUti UrUea, Editor Democrat! I was very much surprised on last Wednes kay morning when I heard ot the notion of the City Council on the evening previous. It seems that three of the Aldeemea have seme spite at Officer Watkius and are bound to have him discharged. To aooomplish this they all state that a certain Influential citl sen informed them that Watkins can sever be found on our streets at night, but they will not give their authority forsuohachargr. Now, I thiuk there is nothing (air la this, m Watkins cannot find out who it is that is thus "stabbing him in the back" nnd he has no opportunity to defend himself. He court examination, but no one will charge that he has been derelict in his duties, and give him a chance to prove his Innocence. The worst of the matter U that all who oppose Watkins are in favor of retaining Heffron. How they can consistently do this is more than I cm telL The charge agaiast Watkins have only bean made and not proven at til, and we doubt much If they can be. Docs it deed any trial to prove that Mr. Heffron is not fit for the position of potior man It is a notorious fact that he has been intoxicated several times while en duty, and that ia enough. But if any more testimony is needed let the members of Albany Ledge L 0. O. F. be called: they were all grossly insulted by him while he was Intoxicated and they wilt not be very backward in testi fying. Such a peace officer ia not fit to look after the welfare of our city, and I was very much surprised to see some of our Alderman vote in the way they did, when they were well acquainted with all the facta. It will not have ithe effect of adding a great deal to their popularity. I hope at the next meeting the Council will (traighten Out this affair. It i not too late yat The Marshal aays he is going to appoint Watkins to fill th vacancy, and if any AUleroian or cituan know anyuung again him tbey should prefer charge. "If it is found that he does' not attend to hi duty he should be discharged. It i no nee to prefer charge against th other man, for he admit all that ha been said against him, and ha been discharged. , - k CrmK. nat and Abroad. Wheat 80 cents.
