rv . n FRIDAY. AUGUST 20, 1S79. I remember once braritij; of ft man who liad been in tho habit of wearing a full beard and moustache, who took a clean shave on-j tiny, and camo home with his face as clean as a priest's. His wife looked at him and failed to recognize him. To carry on the joke. he attempted to kiss her. She scream ed and fought him eff with sharp lin ger nails. At last, becoming weary of the struggle, he told her who he was. She refused to believe him at fiist, but was more indiguant when she. found out that it was really her lord and mas ter than she was before. She accused him of marrying her under false pre tenses, ami said she would never Lave married him if she bad thought he look ed like that. He was so repulmve to her m tuiturtl that she actually sued for a divorce. I can easily appreciate thU woman's feelings.for I have known men to shave and reveal brutal mouths and idiofc iecadirg chins, and so to transform themselves by the use of the razor that they were not the same per son. I don't know when I received such a shock as I did the other day. I had just dropped a letter in a lamp post box, when a wan approached from the other side and said, "How d'ye do" 1 bowed my head ahuhtiT, for 1 bad no idea who he was. "Yon don't know mel" said be. "No," I replied. "Don't thinfe I ever saw you before." "Now look at me hard," eaid he, tak ing off his hat. I looked hard, and saw a man clad in a cream color suit, with a note book and r encil sticking out of his breast pocket. He wore a low collar and a loose tie. On his hands were or ange colored kids, stitched with, black, and his hat was a sort of salmon-colored straw. Then my eyes reached his face, and I saw a bead so closely crojv ped that it looked as though it had been sand-papered. The cheeks and chin were clean shaven, but the upper lip was relieved or a ion", li -at mous tache. "Now don't you quired. know he "No," I replied, quite as mystified as 1 was at erst. "Have vou fersottea Joaonia Mil ler r "What! Impossible! This the poet of the Sierras; the poetic Samjwon of thi Pacific siopel ho was the Delilah that had him shorn of his locks!' "I wanted a change." "And you're got it. Have you writ ten any poetry in this conditions "Xo." ';Then pray don't." "1 have been too ill art 1 too mucu wemeu by my domestic affairs tor work. I have just returned from Ore gon and Mexice. They have been try' leg to put my litt.e girl on the stage. and I had to go home to get her awav from them. This is a sad world. There is nothing in it but trouble. There is my car. Good-by!" and he sprang aboard a green car and waved his sal mon-colored hat fioui the rear plat form. If Joaquin Miller had made his first apjwarance in London aad N ew 1 ork thus shaven, I don't believe he would have had the success that his long hair and flowing beard have won for him. Unshaven he looked i like a poet: now he looks like those men who lounge in front of the Fifth Avenue Hotel, or congregate on street corners. Letter in lte notion Gazette. ST9BICS A BO IT THE CZ 12. Another story of the Emperor's ttav- els brings out in relief the princely sty le he has cf doing things. lie was shown over Cologne Cathedral by a verger who was ignorant of his rank, but who proved to be a very well informed cice rone. The Czar, well pleased, handed him a iive-hundred franc note on quit ting tbe building. "1 can I take that,' said the man, who thought he was be ing put eff with a small piece of that villainous paper wh ich waa once the chief circulating medium of the Father land. The Emperor looked at him for half a moment in mud wonder, when the words were repeated in a some h at saucy tone. The Emperor then quietly took back the note and banded the verger a napoleon. Bui the verger is understood to have pulled out tufts of his own hair that same evening when he learned whom he had affronted, aad what he bad lost. j.ne uzar is, indeed, very generous, especially to his persenal retainers. One day he found an aide-de-camp who bttt fallen asleep m an ante-chamber. Oa the table by which he was sitting was a schedule of debts, which tb yonng officer had drawn up by way of aiding bis memory, and a formidable figure tbey amounted to. "Who on earth is to pay thesef he Lad written in a despairing way at the foot of the paper. Ihe Emperor took up a pen ana lightly wrote the answer, "1, Al exander." By and by the officer was sent for, gcoi-humorediy admonished not to sleep an lie on duty, and given the exact amount required to make him a free man. Once, and only once, the Czar well nigh forgot his high dignity at a State reception, but the occasion was certain ly a trying one. The Marquis of L , a gallant soldier, who distinguished himself under Wellington, was present ed by Alexander I of Hussi? with a magnificent jewel-hilted sword. An other Marquis of L (his son) being accredited to the court of Alexander II on a very solemn diplomatic mission, girt himself with this sword, as was proper and even meritorious. But some mischievous sprits prompted him to suddenly lay his hand on the hilt, and, addressing the Czor before all the court, exclaim: "void le sabre de man pere." It was said with perfect gravi . ty, the noble envoy never having ap parently heard of the "Grand Duch esse." But Alexander's lips twitched, and the lips of all the chamberlains and equerries twitched in unison. Tae Czar triumphed, however, and managed to keep his countenance, and all the courtiers kept their countenances. London Truth. Jeveral years ago tjount iiooert i.YeixKoi ty was arrested at tarsaw fur aa alleged insult to the Itussian Government. The real author of the insult, which con sisted of some words carelesfclv spoken at a social gathering, was IiU wifo. He accepted the accusation, bowevr, and was sent to prison. After he had been searched and thrown into a cell he had found in his coat four pins. These he pulled out and threw on the floor ; then tit the darkness he hunted for them.
