Set sip Tear Bar at Dame.
Bar-keepers in this city pay on an average
$2 per gallon for whisky. One gallon con
tains an average of 65 drinks, and at ten
cents a drink the poor man pays on aa aver
age 6 50 per gallon for his whisky. In oth
er words he pays $2 for the whisky and i SO
to the man for handing it over the bar.
Make yonr wife your bar-keeper. Lend her
$2 to buy a gallon of whisky for a beginning,
and every time yon want a drink go to her
and pay ten cents for it. By the time yoa
have drank a gallon she will have SC 50, or
enoagh money to refund the $2 borrowed of
yon, bey another gallon of whisky, and have
a balance of $2 50. She will be able to con
duct future operations on her own capital,
and when yoa become an inebriate, unable to
to support yourself, shunned by all rwpecU
ble people, your wife will have enough money
to keep yoa nntil yoa get ready to fill a
drunkard's grave.
Several persons at Tangent having asked
that a branch of the Legion of Honor be es
tablished at that place, a party of our citi
zens consisting of (. F. Simpson, D. M. Con
ley, W. B. Floyd, Ike Conn, John llodgers,
L. C Marshal and A. M. Hoop, and Mr.
Moodi, of Soap Creek, went up there last
Wednesday to assist in the organization of
the sooiety. It was a fearful night, but
e gentlemen are so interested in the
cause that they allow no ooatacle to turn
them from their path of duty, and so they
procured a hand car and made the trip.
They arrived at their destination in good
time, and at the close of a religious meeting
hick was being held in the church, Geo. F.
Simpson made a brief and telling speech.
closing by patting in nomination I'.cv. Z). C.
MeFarland as chairman. He was elected
and then the audience was addressed by
Messrs. Conley, Floyd, llodgers and others,
and when the pledge was circulated the en
tire audience, with the exception of two,
signed it 26 in all. A permanent organiza
tion was not effected, owing to the lateness
of the hour, but Rev. MeFarland will call a
meeting in a few days for that purpose. We
hope to hear a good report from this branch
of the Legion of Honor, and it is very prob
able we shall when it perfects its organiza
tion.
A BeaatiTal Display.
The finest display of goods that wt have
ever seen in a show window is at Fox, Banm
& Co's, and we hope all oar readers in this
city, especially the ladies, will goaronad and
"take a peep" at it, and while looking at it
remember that Ted Marks, the genial and
affable representative of J. M. Pike t Co., of
San Francisco, is the gentleman who arranged
the display. If he should display the same
artistic taste when he selects his wife, he will
get a lady that will be absolutely perfect.

hopes to deserve and receive his share of the

The Temperance If esaengcr.
The neatest looking and best printed pub

last week. The title is the Temperance Men
tender, and it is printed in this city by Mans
field & Monteith. As its name indicates, it
is devoted to the temperance cause, and,
jndging from its contents, we believe it wil
in a short time be a power in the battle wit
King Alcohol. It is a neat pamphlet of eight
pages, and is furnished to subneribert for $1

How can tho City Council explain the pre
cipitancy with which it acted in compromise
ing the damage suit (f Willaby against the
City of Albany? It soems that no attorney
was consulted, nor does it appear that any
tax-payers were permitted to know too
minds of the Council or its reasons for the
course it was about te take, except it may lie
souio of th owners of the Canal Ceuipaay,
by whose criminal negligence the accident oc
Icurred that was made the foundation of this
action, was, by its graco, permitted to
share its confidence. The Council in effect
ing this compromise in the haste it did, not
I only assumed to judco of the right of ac'.ion
which tho plain titT might have, but also of
tho legal sufficiency of the complaint ignor
ing on amicable settlement with the plaintiff
soon after fan accident occurred which
agreement had been partially complied with,
I by which he was to be reimbursed for actual
I damages sustained. Hat this is not all. The
Council seem determined if possible to settle
this matter in a way to atop the City of AI
bany from availing itself of any recourse it
might have bad upon the Canal Compaay
for whose negligence the City should answer
in damage. It seems that the Council as
sumed a fearful responsibility in thus blindly

Mr. Mattoon aayt that the principle opou
which his meat preserving process acts is,
that it destroys all the insect life in the meat
and so prevents purification. This being
the ease we cannot see why ft would not act
equally at well on living at on dead Set a.
Mr. M. says he is so well satisfied that it
will, that he proposes if any man has a scab
by theep he is willing to experiment with,
he will go any reasonable distance and apply
his process, and will pay for the sheep if it is
killed, but if cured the owner must give
written statement of the fact over his signa
ture with the liberty of public nse. If the
'process should prove a success in this mat
ter, it will coat the iheep owners lew than a
cent a gallon, and anyone can make it and
use it when needed. Some one having scab
