THEIFAKMEsTa DIARY.
If I were called on to give advice
on but one subject to our readers at
this time of year, and wished to tell
them that which, if observed,- would
be of the most benefit to them, it
would be "keep a Journal." I give
this advice after an experience of
twenty-one years, for I began to keep
ray farm journal in the spring of
1S57.
I wish to call attention to this sub
ject at thU particular time, because
the New Year is the best time In
which to begin. I know that many
persons think it a great task to keep
a journal, but a little experience will
prove that if attended to every day
it becomes very easy. When once
the habit is established we are no
more likely to forget it than we are
to forget to wind the clock, or per
form any other daily task. Do not
gt a book for your diary with print
ed headings, and a certain amount of
. space for each day, for sometimes you
will only want to write a line or two,
and again you will want to write at
some length. Get a plain blank
book, well bound, write in a plain
hand at the head of the first page the
year and the day of the month in
which you begin, and for each record
the day or the month and week. At
the beginning of every new page put
me uiumn, aay ana year. This ena
Dies you, whenever you open fypur
awry, to see at a glance the day of
me recora, ana where a book is used
that will coHUin the record for sev
era! years, this is important
tsut what do you . wish to write
about? -. First, the weather. Let
this record be as brief as possible.
for one day it will read, "fair and
warm;" another, "heavy rain with
rain ana thunder, a. si., cleared off
pleasant p. m.;" or, "snowed all
day;" "drizzly, east wind," etc
etc ii you keep a record of the
temperature, let the thermometer
hang at the north side of the house
the year round, and note the temper
ature at sunrise and at noon, which
will give us usually the highest and
lowest temperature of the da. In
a few years you wiU have a complete
uuiory or the weather that will bo
interesting and useful.
. ,1
pu' uown exactly what you
do Tor the day. The record will usu
ally be brief, but as years pass it will
Increase in value. When you have
kept a journal for four or five years,
you find it of great benefit to look
back and compare the seasons with
one another. I extract from my dia
ry a recora oi a few days, taken at
ranaom, to show how it may be

"April 5th Fair; apple trees In

"June 29th Cut wheal; have a
good crop; my corn will average three

It is not necessary to quote fur
ther, but you will see that but little
need be written each day to givq you
a complete history of the farm trans

together with anything ot importance
mat transpires which you would like
to remember.
I would suggest that on the first
day of each month the price of grain
and stock be entered, and that once a
year and the day the assessor calls
would be the best an Inventory be
taken of farm stock, tools, etc. All
thi. may look formidable to one who
has never tried it, but as soon as the
.habit Is formed it will be found easy
and simple. Keep year boo! to the
family nom and have a particular
t me to attend to it, and before long
it will become a pleasure. As a rule
I think it best that this should be
done by the farmer himself, but
there are many cases where it might
Ik- entrusted to a son or a daughter.
It would be of great advantage to
t:u-.i,, teaching them how to write,
spell, and compose, and help them to
form business habits. Ihey should
be required to do the work well, and
it should be examined and approved
once a month, and a sni.ill monthlv
sum be paid for the work. Every
ooy or gin nice to have a little spend
ing money, ana they would rather
earn it than have it given to tiem

would be considered pay by most

and they would really get more edu
cation out or it than twice that mon
ey would bny in most of our schools.
Much a journal as I have described
beomes more valuable as the years
go Dy. ii win furnish a complete
lanrny nistory, and will often be re
ferred to to settle some question as
to Ike weather, or some ovent of in
terest that has transpired. Whether
this be done by the farmer or some
other member of the family, the edu
cation it gives will pay many times
over for the work employed. At
the risk of seeming egotistical I will
say that I owe to the training I re
ceived by keeping a journal any suc
cess as a writer which I may have
achieved. Practiced Farmer.
