Mt Umattnt FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 1879, .. AtiaiCtLTI STAl ITKMft. California sbeop average in weight of fleece craaion sheep 2J pound per auiiual. Msrino and CoUwold will BTertgri eight pounds per head. Robert Bonner goe in for fast horses, and between his stables in New York eitj and his farm, he keep nine teen ' trotters; thirteen of them have trotted in 2 SO or better, and one in 2 14 J. IC you have any milk to spare, that is more than you - want to feed to the swine, after home treatment, convert it into curd, and see how eagerly the hens will consume it, and hew they will thrive upon it into the bargain. It has been pretty clearly demon strated that good healthy seed, elect ed from the. home wheat field, as one would select and save . seed corn, will not ran out, but en the contrary will grow better annually. Early potatoes may be easily pro duced by placing the seed-tubers in a warm pkco until they sprout, theu cutting them into sets, but taking care not to break the sprauts. Cover them up at night with mats or straw. A contemporary says that farm la borers in Russia receive $1 per day and gooa rations. v e are at a loss to l tu rn a gine where his authority comes from. They do not receive half that sum. Forty cents per day is considered good wages there. There is always a good demand for eggs, and far fine poultry. As fowls can he raised upon any farm at so lit tie expense ana irouoie, it bbouUI lonn a - portion of the business of every coun try family from Maine to Oregon. One third clean straw, eut np with two-thirds good hay, and the whole moistened and mixed with a small por tion of meal.will make palatable food for horses in winter, and such as they will eat eagerly, leaving none in the trongh. We pity the man who can sit down contented before a warm fire, when his stock has not been carefully fed and housed from the inclement weather. Poorjy-housed cattle require twice the amount of toed that animals do when well protected. lney give their horses a certain quantity of arsenic in England to bean ..f. it.;. i . m j tneir coats, out it is dangeroas business, and some valuable animals have just been killed thereby in Cam bridgeshire. Carrots mixed with a portion of grain are better for that pur pose than any thing else. Poultry should not be plucked too soon after killing. If feathers are pulled out while the blood is still fluid, the vesicle at the root of each feather becomes engorged and the skin spotted. Don't feed before killing; a iowl killed while-digestion is going on will hardly keep a week. In" giving carrots to horses, mix with their grain, cut in small slices. By this means the nitrogenous part of the oata has ne chance to pass of! in a fluid statelut combines with the portion of the carrot, and forms a gelatinous substance that is retained to supply the wants of the body. Harness should net be kept hanging in the barn where the cattle are housed, but in a separate room, as the ammonia which impregnates the air will decay the leather. It is very eaxy to board off a small room, and make it the harness-room, wherein to shut np the more delicate farm tools. Large wheat-growers at the West have satisfied themselves bat wheat should be eut six or eight days before becoming fully ripe. This will cause the grain to be realized in its suwt per fect condition. The longer it remains uncut after this stage, the coarser it be comes. If fanners would keep their sons and daughters contented at home, give thetn plenty of good reading; it will prove more attractive than any other means that can be devised, as well as fit them for future dealings with the busy world into which they must pass by-and-by. . Some farmers carefully bed their cows aud oxen, as they do, or should do, their horses. Animals thus treated feel better, and are better. A farmer I woui.hit like to he en the chamber floor himself ; he wants something be tween him and the bare boards. Think of it. TkT. ' . . i o investment pays so well as money judiciously spent upon the farm in rea sonable improvements. Draining wet land will pay from fifty to one hundred per cent, on the cost every year. Good swck pays vastly oetter than poor; ol fences, neat lawn, well-selected li iiv 'frees, - all pay large profits, as well a adding to comfort and self-re spect i ; Shade trees are often planted too near to our dwellings and too thickly, as to make the ' house dark und damp and cheerless. Large evergreens are very much out of place on the sunny side of the house, while they form an appropriate, screen and wind-break along the cold and exposed sides of our buildings, . Set out trees it is a duty, bat set them out judiciously. ' Every fymilv finds more or less bones ' accumulating. Burn them with your wood,, and the ashes thus enriched is one ef the most valuable fertilizers. Money cannot buy an article which will so fertilize your soil. Bones thus ennmmed ,will quadruple the value of wood ashes, which in themselves are among the best of soil-enrichers. ' . - A GOOD CEXB.1T. - ''A. good cement for mending almost anything may be made by , mixing to gether litharge and glycerine to the consistency of thick cream or fresh put ty, .This cement is useful for mending stone jars, or any course eart hern ware, stopping leak in seams of tin pans or washUoilers, cracks and holes in iron tea-kettles, etc. Holes an inch in di ameter in kettles can be tilled and used the same for years in boiling water and food. It may alxo be used to fasten on Iamp-sto;, to tighten loose nuts, to secure loose bolts whose nuts are lost, to tighten lcose Joints of wood or iron, loose boxes in wagon hubs, and in a jrreat many other ways. In all . cases the articles mended should not be used until the cement is hardened, which -will require from -one day to a week, according to the quantity used. This cement will resist the action of water, hot or cold, aeid?, and almost any de cree of heat. A DVETISjEMENTS OLD, TEIED, PvotUrt r ipHtlntf BiijnMittUtlttiMl tit .. art.
