Keoogniaing the fact that all our people are now affected by the hard times, and knowing that when they pay out money for newspapers they of course want to get as much reading matter as possible, we make the following announcement and offer : To all subscribers who will settle what they owe and pay us one year in advance for the Democrat, or to any new subscriber who pays in advance, we will send the following free of charge: The Chicago HViy Xitct fur six months, or the F irmsTi Berieie for one year. THE CB1CAC SEW is an independent paper about the site of the Democrat, but it is printed in smaller type, and doesn't have over two columns of adver tisements. F-aoh number is crammed full ' with the latest news of the world, mLscella neons articles, and as it always has from three to five stories in it a home circle can not find anything else which would be more welcome?1. For $3.25 in advance we will send it and the Democrat to any address fur a full gear. TMK rilUU' KCTIBW is a 16-page monthly agricultural paper, and is as full of departments a the government at Washington, and they all bear evidence of unusual skill and industry in their manage ment Besides its agricultural articles it gives a great deal of miscellaneous reading and some splendid stories. It isn't every day that such an opportunity is offered to get two papers for the price of one, and yon would do well to improve it. rgfcew This la Tear Selchber- ar City Clertlea. The Masonic lodge at Eugene has tender ed Judge Piper, of this city, an invitation to deliver an oration at the public installation of their officers, which takes place on St. John s Day, Dac. 27 th. Inary Bet-to between the t'baat Bdaa. r Flat Maaey aael the Editor af the Kaluare, We have often heard it said that there is always a Sghting editor attached to every newspaper, but it sometimes happens, in the abseaee of the fighting editor, that the editor defmt has to make himself generally useful as did Mark Twain in his endeavors to pub lish an agricultural paper. This "generally useful" wu partially dem onstrated last Friday evening in our quiet little city by Dr. J. F. Hendris and O. T. Porter. These two self-ideal quill drivers endeavored to convince each other of the truthfulness of statements heretofore pub lished in the Albany Bejitrr and the Atr rialmrg Xuclem in relation to each others latent character in the following pugilistio manner: Bound rtt "You are a liar," belligerent ly repeated nineteen times by each. Time, ten seconds. Bound tttond "My character and stand ing in this oommunity is fully established, and no such a dog as you can defame my good name by your libelous publications." Each stand alike in this trying ordeaL Time, two and one-half minutes. Bound third Each of the pugilist came up with clenched fists, but it was plainly to be seen that they were not yet mad enough to do any execution. At this juncture, in almost breathless suspense, the Doctor as serted that A was a gentleman. This asser tion apparently so surprised the editor that he came boldly up, facing the Doctor, as if to get a better squint at his (the Doctor's) physiognomy. An appreciable doubt of that fact evidently hung over the editor's manly brow, so, to make his assertion doubly sure, the Doctor called upon the bystanders, some twenty-five in number, to prove his assertion. Utterly failing in this attempt the Doctor's flighty imagination brought to remembrance his palmy muscular days in California, and with but one thought in view the annihila tion of anti-fiat money editors he went fur the editor in style that would make 1 lee nan or Allan laugh. A few well directed blowi at vacancy, by each, with a mutual separation closed the third round. Time, fourteen minutes. Bound fourth Time being called, both came up rather hesitatingly, and a badinage of epithets prefixed by non-biblical adjec tives ended this desperate round. Time, seven seconds. Bound tlh failed to come off, as the sec onds on each aide had withdrawn durinz round fourth and held a consultation and do- cided first, that each of the contestants had fully established each other assertions made during the desperate round first; second, that this was a fiat-fight; aad third that further demonstrations were useless in each others oehalf while citizens of Harriabure. A contribution of five dollars each to our city treasury was the grand finale to this free exhibition. Should these illustrious performers remain in our midst and see fit to favor ns with an other exhibition of their skill yon may hear from IT. No Who. ar Xrw faalaSjlre. P. 1L Raymond, our worthy postmaster. has rented the rear room in the new Odd Fel low Temple, and will move the postoffice in to it in a very few days. The room fronts on Ferry street, and as the front is almost entirely glass, there will be no Lick of light in any part of the office. A side door opens out on the alley, through which the mail bags will be taken from the stages, and thus pedestrians will not be interfered with when passing along toe street. Mr. Raymond has spent considerable money in fitting up the office, and has succeeded in making it o neat, comfortable and appropriate in its ap poiatmenta that its equal cannot be found in this State. All the old mail boxes have been sold, and Carter k Son have almost excelled their own bright reputation for good work in fitting np the new boxes, and doing the oth er wood work. Moore & Rogers have dune the painting very artistically. The boxes have been heavily varnished so as to leave the natural graining, while the heavy mould ing above is made to imitate the richest of black walnut. The work we Lave described is what an "outsider" would netace, bat a postmaster, or one who knew anything abont the postoffice business, would want to know of the inside arrangements. To be brief w would say that these are everything that Mr. Raymond's long experience in the postoffice has made him capable of suggesting, and we sincerely believe that no other office in the State equals this one for the convenience of its appointments. Taxea Cassias; la Matt I. Sheriff Dickey was in the city last Saturday aed he reports that taxes are coming ia very slowly. On his collecting tour he had gape through the Forks of the Santiam, the Leb anon, Sweet Home, Brash Creek and Browns ville communities and he had oidy collected some $10,000 or $12,000. This week he vis its Harrisburg, Halsey and Sbedd, and if the receipts do not increase in proportion be will not have more than enough caqli at the end of hi collecting tour to pay the State taxes. This is caused partly by the scarcity of mon ey, and partly by some of the tax-payers thinking that they can pay their taxes at such a time as suits them, and not before. We think such persons will find themselves wofully mistaken, or else we misjudge the temper of oar Sheriff. It U our opinion that they will all have to come forward and "pun- gle, and that very shortly, too, and to their taxes will be added the Sheriffs evpenses. We give this as a friendly hint, and those of our readers who wish to save themselves a needless expense had better" come far ward and settle np soon. Jfew Dental Beams. Dr. G. W. A rtWILI BKOIL, A Miaailac Mrrape aa4 Three Law Hall. For a good while there has boon trouble between the families of David Junkins snd John Tcthcrow,Ron-in law of Wash Pugh, up tn the Orleans precinct, and it culminated in a bloodless row hist Monday. After tho row tho matter was brought into court and developed tho following facts s It soeuis that some time ago, while Junkins was out in Son thorn Oregon on A pleasure tour, Mrs. Tethorow took thocluthnsoff his little boy ono day and put on an old suit belonging to one of her boys, and then sent him back home. In the course of time Junkins wandered back homo, but never until last Monday did he know anything about the donation of cloth ing. He immediately gathered up the clothes, and taking them ovor to Tetherow's threw them on the floor, at the same time giving his brother-in-law's family his opinion of their disinterested kindness. This brought on a row. Tetherow got hold of an axe; Jun kins grabbed a billet of wood, and Mrs. T. rushed in between and stopiiod the battle. Tetherow then went Into the house, and get ting a pistol, sliot at Junkins, and Mr. J. then came to the conclusion that he had bet ter have no blood. Three law suits have re sulted from tlio row. Junkins was charired with assault and battery, and lias jut been cleared before Squire Palmer in this city Tethorow is now being triod for assault with intent to kiil.'aud an attempt will bo made to bind Junkins over to keep the pcaee. Some may have a curiosity to know the political complexion of our city, and of course the vete which we publish in another column will hardly settle the question, on aecom.t of the great number of tickets which were scratched. We had some little enrioeity in that direction onrself. and to gratify it we obtained a.xoa to the ballots cast at the cent election, ami in that way found out the number of times each candidate was "scratch ed," aud then by a little unuring it was very easily determined how the city stood politic ally. The result showed that in the First Ward the Democrats do not have majority of over 2. In the Second Ward they have about 7, while in the Third Ward the Re publicans have a majority of perhaps 3. Wi concluded that it would nat lie best (probab ly not healthy) to publish the table (of "scratches," but if any one wishes to know just how hi friends "scooped him up" he can find out by calling at our office. t'Jfy Central Coawmltle.
