The full extent of the terrible disas
ter in the coal mine at Abercaruo yes
terday is now known. At half past two
o'clock this morning tlio Hooding of the
pit was begun. At that hour the flro
was wmun a snort distance or the bot
tom of the shaft, and nil hope of fur
thor rescues hod to be abandoned.
When this decision was announced to
the relatives of the 251 men still in the
pit the scene was terrible beyond de
scription. Thirteen additional bodies
of victims of the explosion were recov
ered before the floouiug of tho pit was
begun.
The Abcroarno oolliorv is the prop
erty of the E. B. B. W. Vale Steel,
Iron, and Coal Company, one of the
largest iron and coal proprietors in
South Wales. It is situated a few hun
dred yards from Aberoarno Kail way
station, in the Western Valley section
of the Monmouthshire lUilway.
The valley is one of tho most charm
ing in the district, and lies within sight
of tho Crnmlin Viaduct; so well known
to travellers. The pit, which is 31V)
yards deep and one of tho largest and
best worked in the district, was yield
ing 1,000 tons of steam coal daily. The
machinery, for winding, pumiiug and
ventilating was of the boat kind, and
the use of safety lamps in the mine was
rigidly enforced. The canso of the ex
plosion cannot even be surmised.
Three detonations were successively
heard on the surface. Tho framework
and castings of the pit were thrown to
a height of &K) feet abovo the month of
the shaft. The colliery employs up
ward of 1,000 hands, of whom 873, tak
ing their turn or "shift," went down at
eleven o'clock In the morning. Twenty
one of this number came up at noon,
up to which time nothing had occurred
to create suspicion of danger.
At 12:10 r. m., a loud rumbling
noise was heard, quickly followed by a
flash of llama from the pit's month, and
a column of smoke, dust and debris
ascending high in the air. The explo
sion damaged the winding gear, thus
destroying the only means of commu
nication with the men in the pit. As
soon as the gearing could be repaired
working parties were seut down the
shaft, and eighty-two men and boys
workins'.within a few hundred yards of
the shaft were rescued. But it became
evident, as attempts were made to ad
vane into the workings, that but little
hope could be entertained of any lifo
surviving. About 400 yards from the
bottom of the shaft are the stables, and
here fourteen horses were found, all
dead. Beyond this point the explorers
could not go, on account of the Impu
rity of the air and the prevalence of the
choke-damp.
Volunteer explorers brought ont ten
or twelve men very much burned, and
also seven dead bodies; but it is feared
that no others can be for the present
got at in consequence of the fire extend
ing, and there remains no reasonable
hope that any further lives will be
saved. The whole district of Mon
mouthshire is much excited, and it
seemed last night as if the entire female
population of the district had gathered
about the month of the shaft. A'. Y.

The Xobleat of Dogs.
Every one is familiar with the appear
ance of the noble Newfoundland dog,
whose splendid qualities, physical and
moral, are famous mil over the world.
We still enjoy a pre-eminence in pro
ducing the pure breed ; and consider
able numbers of them are exported
yearly, the demand for them in other
countries being still very great. Their
intelligence, gentleness, fidelity, and
affection for their masters hav made
them universal favorites; while their
aquatic propensities and powers, which
they often display in rescuing human
beings from a watery grave, add greatly
to their val ae. The true New found land
dog is entirely black, from twenty-six
to miriy incnes in Height, oi a power
ful frame, majestic appearance and be
nevolent expression of countenance.
In this island they seldom exceed twenty-six
inches in height, but in England
they reach thirty and in rare cases
thirty-two inches. Last year a German
friend of mine, Herr T. A. Verkruzen,
a distinguished conchologist, brought
here, as a present, three fine young
dogs of the Leonberg breed, now pro
nounced to be the finest in the world,
superior even to our own. We hsve
thus the prospect of possessing shortly
a still more magnificent race of dogs

mens of this new breed have in one
year grown to be splendid animals, and
by good judges are pronounced to be
the finest ever seen in the country.
They are expected to propagate this
year, but will not be full grown till tLt
third year.
The Leonbenr is the result of skillful
crossing between the St. Bernard, the
.Newfoundland, and tho wolf dog of the
Pyrenees, and appears to combine the
best qualities of the three noble races.
Baron Essig of ljeonberg, Wurtemberg,
Germany, was the breeder of this new
species, which is already world-renowned;
and our specimens were ob
tained direct from his establishment,
and were very carefully selected. They
are the favorites of kings, princes, and
nobles in Europe. The Empress of
Austria has one of them, the Prince of
Wales another; Prince Bismarck and
Garibaldi, the Grand Duke Frederick
of Baden, and scores of other exalted
personages are possessors of the famous
Leonberg. A good specimen, well
trained, often sells for 50 sterling, and
even as high as 100. They are eagerly
sought after in all parts of the world to
which their fame has penetrated ; and
they thrive in all climates: At the
great dog shows of London, Paris,
Vienna, Berlin, Bidet), and Lima in
Peru, thev have carried off the foremost
prizes. In 1873, at the Paris dog show,
the first prizes of two gold medals were
won by Leonberg dogs. They grow
to be thirty to thirty-six inches in
height, and are frequently over 100
pounds in wejight. with noble beads and
great symmetry of form. They are ex
ceedingly gentle, and possess such in
telligence that they can be trained to
do almost anything within the compass
of doghood. Boston Traveller.

The Lftxt of the tinmblfra at Wiesbaden.
Wiesbaden, however, has one of the
old set left, who is regarded as a
rare specimen of extinct speciesa kind
of triloWt or lci!iyonaurun,or some other
fossil monster, belonging to a former
stratum of society. His history may
serve to point a moral, thongh it is
harUly picturesque enough to adorn a
tale. lie is an English man by birth,
of an old historic name, and a family
of distinction and aristocratic connec
tion. After the usual edooation of tho
sans cf tho wealthy and high-born at
one of the English publio schools, Ea
ton or Harrow, and perhaps a short res
idence at either Oxford or Cambridge,
an appointment in tho civil service of
India was procured for him through
the influence of his powerful friends.
Promotion was sure, and the prospect
of respectability and independence
certain, if not wealth and a Governor
Ueueralahip; but the perverse youth,
becoming impatient of his low but
regular advanoe, threw np his appoint
ment, and pocketing whatever salary
was due, and such money as an indul
gent father might allow him, made his
way to the Continent of Europe.
Wiesbaden was then in the fallnoss of
her gambling splendor, and the youth
was soon sporting in it fatal blaze.
His pockets were cleaned ont again and
again, as they were replenished bv iren-
erons remittances from home. Finally.
iiis laiuor uiea, leaving mm as a young
er son some 20,000 for his share of
the patrimony. This was soon staked
and gone; but fortune occasionally
smiled upon him, and one sight be
went home with some $30,000 la his
pockets. He hastened next morning
to deposit this handsome sum in the
hands of his banker, and made known
to all his relatives and friends that bo
he had bidden farewell forever t the
green tables of roulrtie and trontt el tjuar

me. iiis resolutions, nowever, hardly
survived the time for response of con
gratulation from his family in England
to his welcome announcement. In leas
than a week he bad withdrawn aud lost
all bis money, and was again a beggar,
suing for the bounty of his friends.who
now, believing him to be incorrigible,
settled upon him an annual pittance,
baroly enough to keep him in daily
bread and beer, and rupply htm with a
yearly suit of coarse broadcloth. So
inveterate, however, was his passion
for gambling,-that he never failed, at
the very moment of receiving his small
ou&rterly allowance, to stake it all on
the green cloth. Now, at last, that
Wiesbaden has got rid of gambling and
its aeducementa, the old sinner is said
to be penitent; but is suspected that
it is his vice that has left him, not be
his vice, as tho cynical ltochefoucauld
says of old age in its supposed reforma
tion. He continues to live in Wies
baden partly from choice and partly
from necessity, for he wants the moans
of going elsewhere, and, besides, is
loath, no doubt, to leave his habitual
beer house and favorite sausage shop,
and perhaps the scene of his former de
light. We have heard that at one time
he was one of the gay est of the moths that
fluttered night after night about the
gas-lights of the gambling saloon. In
his youth for he has spent a larger
part of a life of more than three
score years in Wioabaden he was re
garded as the very pink of fashion, was
the chosen companion of the young
bucks of ton and rank, and shone not
an unfavored bean in the eyes of the
miscellaneous fine dames of this gay
resort. He is now a pitiful old man,
who goes sbambltnir about tha
in the shabiest of suits, with his old
lemmi over nu eyes, bis head hang
ing, his body bent, and his
hands deep in the great gapping pock
