' Editor l)i'rx.ocrcU : Please allow me space in your p.'tper to correct some falsehoods in regard to the killing of Van Allen, scattered through Linn county by a Mr. Frutn. If the account which yon published in the Democrat was as he told it, lie has only told one truth, and that was that Allen had been killed. I got my authority from Van Allen himself and eye-witnesses of the affair and will now tell you how it all occurred. Allen and Cline were having a fight about something, when a man named Wails ran up and caught Allen by tlie throat. Allen called on lbips to help, him, and when Frips ran to his relief some one else jerked him away and Allen had to fight it out alone. When the fight was ever a warrant was sworn out for the arrest of Allc-i and lrips, and they both got their horses aud ran away, knowing that they could not get justice if brought to triaL Jerry Lucky wa3 deputized to make the arrests, and he deputized J as. Chamberlain, who immediately went . in pursuit of the beys. He overtook them near the edge of town and handed the warrant to Dripe. Drip glanced at it, and handing it keck, put spars to hi horse and rode on telling Allen toocme cc When they had gone about thirty or forty yards Cham berlain fired and hit Allen's horse in the back. Allen turned in his saddle and asked if he was shooting at him, and Chamberlain said, "So by G-d, 1 ain't," and just then fired twice again, one ball hitting Allen in the back part of the thigh, the ball coming out in the left grain, and the other striking him in the hip. Allen then wheeled his horse and fired, the ball hitting Chamberlain's horse in the shoulder. Chamberlain then ran tor wa as ist as he eould and told that Allen had shot at him lint, lie then got a Henry riflo and started out of town to finish up his job, but soon met Allen's friends bringing him in. Allen lived two days, and this account of th shoaling affair I got from him on hi death bed, and from an eye witness. I am no lawyer; simply an old woman, almost heart-broken, but I think when our laws were made they were intend ed to be founded on justice, and looking at it in that way I can't see what excuse Cham' berlin had for killing my son. He had only been ngnting with his hands used no weapons at all and if that crime is punisha ble w ith death I am very much mistaken- ALLKN'S MOTHEU. Tbe First Boarder. Sheriff Jickey has a boarder at tlie county hotel already. A young mawsiamed Win. Fen ton and a companion got en a "eplurge" on eex streets on day this week, and on Policeman Watkins trying te arrest them, Fentos assaulted him by striking him on the head with a rock encased in a handker chief. Fenten certainly didn't know who he had to cope with or he would not have acted so. t Watkins immediately bagged him without any trouble, and swearing out a com plaint soon had him bound over to await action of the grand jury on the charge of committing an assault with a dangerous weapon. Fenton is an intelligent looking young man and seems to feel very badly over his misfortune. He says his father is i business in Sheridan, Yamhill county. WiKknie at gfcedd. Ilia Corvallis Bras Band bassed tlirook tnia eity last Friday, going bonie from Salem Where they h:id spent the Fourth. They played one or two airs at the depot, and then serenaded this office. At that time the entire force were away attending to the wants -of tlie inner man, and consequently the reception of the band was not as cordial and warm-hearted as could b wuhed. We are very sorry that it should have been so, ' but cannot help it now. We are nnder just as many obligation, as we would have been had we been present, aud we certainly will always remember them for the honor conferr ed upon this oSice. We have heard them play e,nite a number of times, and have no hesitancy in pronouncing them the very best band in this State outside of Portland, and we would (hesitate considerably before we would assert that even a Portland land could xcel tli em. esr rateala.
