What in. thunder iloea Massachusetts, New llaabpahire,- Pennsylvania, Olii ana other States need wiih tens of thousands f ataads of arm etch, when they have ae enemy in their midst end no frontier to be protected while we here in Ore gon have the Government's Indian wards quartered upon us aud supplied with arm a and ammunition, and our white settlers destitute of the at cans of defense! This is a most wretchedly villainous policy, and the people of the Pacific States who are environed and constant ly menaced by the savage beasts ; in whose favor the Government has for the past twenty years legislated, should demand of their Senators and Repre eeatativea ia Congress such legislation as will place within our power a means of defense agaiaat these frequent out' tracks and murderous attacks. Oar frontier settlers now doling fraaa their homes for want of proper means ef defense is a sumcient pie to our friends at Washington for prompt ecUen in the matter. a uuniw r. Advices yesterday seem te indicate that the contest between Messrs. Stites aad Powell for State Superintendent of Publie Instruction is so cIo.se as to re quire the official vote to determine the result. All aave two counties have been heard from which give Powell 178 saajority. Baker and Grant are the counties yet to hear from, which gave Thayer 185 majority. If the same vote ia given Mr. Stites he will be elected by 7 vetee. We have an abiding faith in. the good sense and judgment of the people of those two counties, and are therefore confident of Stites election. mrtitTM res . I MlifrikMMrat:-- -5 - -a, . t i After the frequent scurrileua attacks made upon my private character lu the late canvass, I had reason to hope I would be allowed to eajor tha triumphs of the greoubaok prinuiplea in gallant eld Linn anaieleetetl. - But it appears there is a certain nhyater of the Demo cratic eld who is dissatisfied with his present notoriety, and surprised at the multitude of devoted areenWek era lltal could ' hot be 'intimidated, an ilx J : or bought. He feigns te make us believe that he U one of that noble baud of pa triots that is Wauling for priuciplo, aud exeraplitie his devotion to the cause by imitating the deeds of that datarttly soldier that hid himself away during the battle, but when it was 'ever he rushed oat among the slain, plunging his sabre into the fallen at a furious rate te prove his cearage and fealty Front tha way this Ilalaey heru exults aver kia work he imagiuea that he has given toe a fatal thrust.. Hear him: "Dr. Ileudrlx, he Democratic sere- head, going qver the county telling false hoods about the record of the last Leg islature, and, at the same time, secretly caucusing te sell out to the Republi cans." It will be ebserved that while this bogus "greenbacker" gives my name to thejtublic and holds me up as one wf his alain trophies, he is careful te conceal his awn name, but seizes upon a name that implies honor aud lesaect- ability, instead of the one that law aud principle attaches to hint. I tlesery the ear-marks of this much domesticated animal, but I demand ef him his true uame, that the people may truly estimate the value ef his hide. It is a little singular that this fellow akould appropriate "greenbacker" for his nana da plume, the same havieg beeu used by me for many months past in the columns of this paper to demon strata the financial theory of the green back party. I now aay to this bastard "greenbacker," that whenever he says that I at any time proposed "to sell eut to the Republicans," he tells a bare and malicious lie, and I here and now brand him as a sneaking, cowardly, contempt. - hie faUitier. Tbe nun that will tail a deliberate lie to reb his fellow man ef a good naaie and defame his chaaactcr, will steal. The man that will steal name will steal anything else if he is sure he will uet be caught, so I caution the s-oed people of Halaev to keen a sharp lookout for this bogus "green backer." Allow me to further aay that all of the proportion to "sell out" that I know anything of, comes from the Demeeratiti party. . This 'ccitaorieus "greenbacker" makes charges ef preSdy against the Republicans, and declare that greenbackers with Democratic an tecedents aere slamefullv sold eut. Of this I kaow but little, and care less, for I have but little respect for the mm, let him be Republican or Detneciat, who votes in obedience to tbe sting ot party task. It u the proudest ejtoch in the history of my political life to know that there is between feur and five hundred independent, noble freemen in Linn eounty, who atand away abevr and beyead the reach of party prejudice and will rote, lire and die in the de fence of their principles. This spurieub "greenbacker" seeks to make the im pression, that he voted tbe greenback ticket and constitutes one of the num ber that was deluded into that "treach erous political aaare," aud was "sold eat" by the Remblican?. Poor fellow! He says, "let us go back to the hease of our fathers, return te the goed o'.d Demacratie fold." Now, my pretended whilom "greenbacker," this little piece of sophistry is entirely too transparent for sensible people to believe, iJ. it is too lew and contemptible for any one te practice, except such as stab ia the dark, or appropriate false me to give rent to their splen that they not da over their own signature.
