After the trial, two of tbe defendant's broth ers, big, bravs, valiant young fallows, trailed themselves of the high privilege of an Amer ican citisra aad cursed the plaintiff roundly, and finally ens of them (Felix .track him. Although the yoon g man who waa assailed was an invalid, he mado it very warm for his opponent nntil an unforeseen accident occurred. It seems this young man, whose name is Hutihiuson, wis crushed by hone j sometime last year, having his wrist and' several ribs broken, and that ever since he has been subject to spasms, one of which attacked him in this melee. Officer Watkins arrived upon the scene just in time and took the tick man ts the hotel, and Pagh to the Recorder's ofEca, Pugb first plead not guilty, bnt afterwards, concluding he was mistaken, changed his plea and paid a fine of $10. . He then wanted to swear cui a complaint against Hntohinson, but sevoral mm informed him that if be continued to persecuto that unfortunate young fellow they would have both himself and brother arrested for using obscene lan guage on the streets. t This had the desired effect, and the valorous young man was pro railed upon to depart. The money real ised by the affair will go into the. treasury of the Aid Society, and will be expended in helping the poor and needy an object to which all should contribute. ' Ike Albaar Feaadry. C. C. Cherry is now doing a rushing busi ness at his foundry.' A short time ago he received the contract for building two new scotching mills and brakes for Wheeler & Bice, who will commence in a few days put ting up buildings for the reception of them. Cherry has recently procured the services of one of the most competent maehinists in this State, which enables him te turn eat better work than any foundry outside of Portland. A. F. Cherry, the former proprietor of the foundry, recently sold the eld planer and nearly all of the old tools to the Pacific Threshing Machine Co., ef Salem, and their place is being supplied by an entire new out fit. Such enterprise en the part of young tea should be encouraged. C Carter at C. This ' firm put an adv. in our last week's paper which we inadvertently omitted to mention. The senior member of the firm wishes to dispose of his half share in the business, and offers a splendid bargain to any mechanic who is possessed of some means. No better planer and sash and door factory than this can be found in the State, and the business done is very large. The proprietors bare bought the right for Linn, Lane and Benton counties for the manufacture and sale of the celebrated "Ereelsior harrow and elod masher," and are now turning out that much desired agricultural implement in large cam bers. Read tbe adv. Kew Delegate. W. B. Scott, of Linn Engine Co. Xo. 2, baring resigned bis position as a member of the Board ef Delegates at the last meeting of tiit body, P. H. Raymond was duly elect ed to Sil the vacancy at a special rseeting of tbe company held last M. nday evening. Mr. Scott was one of the best working Delegates in the Board, and bis fellow members were very sorry to bear of his contemplated re moval te California, His successor is an earnest, energetic young man, and will ceme aa near filling Mr. Scott's position as any one who could have been Selected. The Hew Betel. . . Messrs. Pficffer Bro's inform us that they will open out their new hotel daring the first week in March, and will be in full blast by the time County Court eon veaes on the 11th. We went through the building .a few days ago, and find it to be well appointed through out. Their rooms are well lighted, have gees' ventilation, and are reached by an easy stair way. The proprietors ara perfect gentlemen, : and we thin will lever fail to please customers. A Friend r tbe Ladies. Who? Why L E. Blain, of course. ' '; After appointing a committee en order of business the Alliance listened to a few short addresses "and then adjourned nntil evening. At 7 o clock the meeting waa called to or der by President Conser. Tbe large auditor ium of the Court House waa filled to over flowing, and also the gallery above. Suck a large audience has not been seen in Albany since tbe Hammond revivals. . After transacting some little business, Dr. 3. G. Irvine delivered a very interesting ad dress. Hon. W. R. Dunbar, wishing to do something religions, proposed to raise a collection-, which, when taken up, amounted to the nice little sum of $17.85. " Rev. Clark, of Shedd, made a few forcible remarks, and waa followed by Mrs. Duniway, who, evidently forgetting where she was, waded into tbe suffrage question for about twenty minutes, tt waa pleasing afterwards to bear some plain, practical temperance talk from such earnest workers in the temperance eause as Bart, H. Allen and John Conner. Interspersed between the different exercises of the evening was some of the very best ef vocal music, rendered by a choir ef twenty four voices. Yesterday morning the Alliance snet at 9:30 o'clock and daring the morning session the following question waa ably discussed by quite a number ef speakers : "How can the Temperance eause achieve a speedy and com plete triumph." As we went to press early last evening we were unable to get a report from the afternoon's proceedings. This session of the Alliance bas been by far the the most interesting of any which has heretofore been held, and tha representa tion is muck larger than ever before. It will probably adjourn to-day. Te Assistant secretary er the Santtnat Greenback Club Chances his Al leitnncc A Manly Letter. SASTIA2I, Feb, l(t, 1378. MiUvr Dmaara: ' i - j, . , On the 6th of last month f joined the Santiam Independent Greenback Club and was chosen Assistant Secretary of that or ganization. '"To-day a grand Democratic rally was held hare and a large club organized, and I joined it At my name was published as Secretary of the Greenback Club, and en relied with about 32 other npmbei-s, it may teem to my friends here and elsewhere that I I was not working under true principles. By way of explanation I will say that I str.rttd out to work with every, true patriot ia com mon eause against tbe corruption now exist ing ia our country; to work for the sake of humanity; for starving men aad womeu ; for little children, cold, nuked end starving; for those who have been driven to crime by hun ger ; for those who have forsaken the path of virtue to keep body and soul together all caused by this deep and damnable corruption in our financial .affairs, brought about by the Republican party. Kew this is what the Greenback party olainis te be working for, and as the Demo crats show by their platforms, and late speeches and sets in Congress, that they are working for the same thing, I will hereafter east my lot with the old party. I do so for the reason that it is well organized, and thus haaa better opportuuity ef offering speedy relief to the poor, oppressed people of our country. If the Greonbaokers . run A tiekct it will be almost like two Democrats running for the same office, and what Would be the result t We all know that a kingdom divided , against itself cannot stand. For God's sake let us all work together to root out the cor ruption which exists in our old party, and not divide up at this late day and let Mitchell gain another victory, when success Is in our hands sure if we will not work against bur own interest. The Independents or Green backers cannot tlect Oteir offietrt, and. can see no success in favor of the workingman except in tbe Democratic party. - . . Some of my Greenback friends are in favor of issuing greenbacks and navim off the national debt immediately, while I bear of some Democrats who ask for the repudiation of all bonds bought for less than 75 cents on the dollar. Away with sueh. doctrine. If we repudiate any, repudiate all ; and if not, pay every eent according to contract, v f When will men leave off prejudice and be cool and considerate? The Labor World it written in passion, and followers ef it are led by their passions. They should stop and re flect. Edmunds says in an editorial that bis paper "will be devoted to more important matter than -worthless personalities," yet ha forgets himself when cornered and calls Noltner, of the Standard, nearly every hard name he can think of. In speaking of an other paper which bad said something; about his being an infidel, he said that if the editor thought "that the people would receive black guardism as argument they were sadly mis taken." I think a te, and the Labor IFcrW will not humbug many Democrats by talking about people, as it has, eaUiagthem jackasses. shite-pokes, tumble-bugs, lick-spittles, bab oons, liars, slanderers, fools, thieves, etc It is losing favor over here very fast, and should do as, as no man who nses such filthy epithets ae the editor ef the Labor World does, hat never, wSl never, aad can never stake our eeuntry better. It don't pay one eent ef the national debt; it dou't give bread to the starving, but only stirs up strife and brings dishonor npon the cause. Yours, respectfully, , ' - o) Jas. Howes. r,rtu,l. W. O. Editor Democrat ; Supposing tlint a few items from these parts maw be of some interest to yourself and tbe many readers of your excellent paper through, out the eounty, we therefore write you this cemm u ui cation. Generally speaking, there it bnt little transpiring in this locality, outside of the ordinary econrrnnoes of every-day life. But occasionally a little matter takes place here that is of lomu significance in a political point of view. Such an occurrence as this found place amo:ig the passing events ef this town on last Saturday. That was the date set by the so-called Greenback party ot this part of the "moral heritage" te organize a greenback club in Scio precinct for the pur pose of holding political meetings, in erder to advance the political faith and "docterns" of ths aforesaid greeubaok party of the Forks. Finally the hour for hostilities came and a few person of the greenback and Re publican persuasion gathered themselves to gether in the oity hall and the order of ex eses began by cne of the faithful motioning that one of the other faithfuls act as "cheer man" ef the "metitin" ; carried and the obair was at once occupied by the party designated. After the ohairmai had tsmewhat recovered from bis embarrassment, occasioned by placing him in such an important position, he began to comprehend the situation, and sug gested the necessit y of electing other officers. After the requisite number 'of officers were chosen, the "meetji" was addressed at short intervals by two of the reformers, in a manner seldom if ever before witnessed in this place. The speakers were both very muck at loss forlanguagein whubteexpresstheirthoughts, or at least it so appeared to a "man p a tree." Some think that tha difficulty waa owing to a lack of knowledge about tha sub ject on which tbey were trying to talk. After these fellows had concluded their remarks en the all absorbing questions of finance and money, in whieh the fact waa obvious that they did not understand the elementary principles ot eitbiir subject, . the exercises closed with a call for "jiners." During this erder of business, things assumed tbe aspect of a Quaker meeting, which condition ef affairs continued for the remainder ef tbe session. When the meeting adjonrsed, it was ascertained thai, six individuals had joined the club three Democrats aad three Repub licans ; the Republicans being taken in en probation, awing io the fact that tomeef them are mot yst old enough to rote. The rites of baptism were denied the probationers -until after the Juae election, when they are all to be sprinkled front aa aril conscience and received into full membership if tbey rote right Taking the whole thing together it was ens of the flattest and most ridiculous fsrees in the history of politics, in this sec tion of ths country. The probabilities are that if a greenback club is to be made te lire here, the membership will bars to eome from some other preeinet where greenback era are more numerous. This, we are informed, is the talk among some rf the determined ones of this rain hallucination. But this busini is all gong to fail ever here, from the fact that Democrats have found out that tbe great apostle Edmunds is a bilk, aad that the green back party ia this State is beaded by persons of no nioi-al er political worth. They eee that the whole thing is a trick for tbe purpose ef gainiag strength for Mitchell in the next Lt.iilalure.
