Insects and mildews, Injurious to the loaves or seedlings and root Krafts, can bo kept In subjection or destroyed by a free uso or a combina tion erf Uiue and sulphur. Take of quick or uu&lacked lime four parts and of ccramon flowers of sulphur ono part (four pounds of sulphur to a peck of lime); break np the lirao into small bits, than mix the sulphur with it in a light vessel (iron is tho best); peur en them enough boiling water to slack tho lime to a powder; cover the vessel closa as soon as the water is poured en, This makes a nest excellent whitewash for orchard trees, and Is very useful as preventa tive of blight on pear trees, to cover the wounds in the form of a paste, when cutting away diseased pnrts; also for coaling the trees in April. It may be considered as the ono peclBe for many noxious Insects and mildew in the orchard and nursery; it? materials should be always ready at hand; It should be used quite fresh, as it would In time become sulphate of line, and lose its potency. Whenever dusting with lime is spo ken of, this should be used. This preparation should be sprinkled over the young: plant as soon, or before, ' any trouble from aphides, thnis er mildew occurs early in the morning:, while the dew is on the trees. This lime aad Bulphar combination is de structive to these pests in this way; Firstly ay giving off sulphuric acid gas, which is deadly poison to mt ute life, both animal and fungiod; and the lime destroys by contact the same thiags; besides, its prcsenco is noxious to them; neither is it iniur- , ioue to common vegetable life, except in excess, unless tho lime to the foli age ef evergreens. Prof. Oyrua ABAS MAXIMS. 1. Let your colt be domesticated and live with yon from his tendcrest age, when a horse he will be simple, docile, faithful and iuured to hard ship and fatigue. 2. Do not beat your horse?, nor epeaK to iem in a loud tone of voice; rto not get angry itb. them, but kindly reprove their foulis; they will do better theieafter, for they under stand the language of man and its meaning. 3. If you have a long day's jour ney, spare your horse at the Btart; let him frequently walk to recover his wind. Continue this until ho has sweated and dried thrco time, and you may ask of him whatever you please, he will not leave you in dif ficulty. 4. Observe your h-rso when ho is! drinking at a brook. If in bringing down his head he remains square, j without banding his limbs, ho pos-i sasses sterling qualities, and all parts of his body arj built syinmetrtciilly. 5. Four things he mut h:v broad front, chest, loins a; d limhs; f.mr things long ueck, chest, fore-arm and croup; four things ahort-aterns, back, ears and tail. A CHK tr SMOKE MOCSE. How this may readily bo mado without the use of a mechanic is told in this wise by the Farmer's Friend: "Dig a narrow pit from twelve to eighteen inches deep, throwing the earth all out on one side. From near the bottom of this pit lig a trench of sufficient length to hold ono or two joints of stove-pipe, at such an angle as will bring the end a way fro-n the pit to the surface of the ground. Over the end of tho pip sot a com mon fleur barrel or largo cask, as may bo needed, and, having removed both heads, bank up around it with looee earth, so that no smoko can es cape at the bottom. Hang tho hams, etc., in it, using some round Micks to ran through the strings. Putting a cover on, the sticks will leave space enough for drait to let tho smoke pass freely. Build a smoke fire of com cobs, damp, hard wood or sawdust in the pit, and you will have a cheap, salo and efficient smoke-house with very little (roub le." - Some have said i hat it is rot the business of private men to meddle with government, a bold and dis honest saying, which is fit to come from no mouth but that or a tyrant or a slave. To say tint private men have nothing to do with the govern ment is to say that private men have nothing to do with their own happi ness or misery; that people ought not to concern themseves ft-hether they are naked or clothed, fed er starved, deceived or instructed, pro tected or destroyed. Cato. Joeh Billings, or some one else, aald, No man will ever get to heaven riding a sore backed horse," But, f r all this, I observe a good many such horses, go where I will. There is a cheap, simple, and efficient way to cure sore liacks, and old s res of any kind. Take white oak bark, peel the rosa or outside off, add wa ter, and heil it down till it is as black as ink. When cool, add to a gallon of the extract two ounces alum. 'Wash he affected part two or three times a day, until cured. m m. If in debt, economize in all possible ways, devoting all your surplus means in relieving yourself and, if possible, commence the coming year out of debt, than yon will have no fears of a call by the sheriff or con stable. .
