The spelling school mo.nl A having reached Albany our citizens- and eitifcenesses met at the College Chapel last Tuesday nlgbt and throttled Webster's old "El mentary" with a will, and determina tion which demonstrated that there was to be no foolishness In the ortho graphical line in Albany henceforth. Rev. H. W. Btratton, John Conner and J. H. Foster were selected as referees, and Prof. Box as pronouncer. .; Miss Warren and C, H. Turrell and Hetty Miller form ed a club and went into bankruptcy on "'Mittimus;" Geo. Foster was let out on '.'Treatise;" Sam. Young rattled out "Doorcase" with "dore," and tried to get behind the doorcase when every body guftawed right out; Mrs. Etta Brown put ea in "Weevil;" Maggie Foster subsided on "Anise" and wasn't "'Cumin" any more; L. Stewart and Mrs. Foster remained of all his hosts, and Mrs. Sox was alone standing as the "Last of the Mohicans" on Miss War ren's side, Mrs. 8. was impaled on "Phleme," and Capt. Stewart's folks did a terrific amount of cheering, to the disgust of the other side who dido' t aee any fun in such empty vanities. It was a right down Jully affair how. ever, and the 25 cents admittance fee netted a handsome sum for the Sab bath schools of our city A second trial will come off- to-night at the same place. Mr. Allen Parker ,. of the firm of Parker Bros, & Morris, of this city leaves Portland on the steamer to-day, bound for Liverpool, whither he goes to negotiate the sale of a ship load of wheat which was chartered by them, and soiled for that port in February last. Memory is one of the greatest gifts God ever gave to man. How often our thoughts turn in retrospection of the past, back to the happy days of our childhood, and to that "dear old home" which perhaps we shall see no more. No wonder that the sweetest harps have " been tuned to sing of "Home Sweet Home," where we wandered In early years a thoughtless child, care less in innocence, with not a thought of the future. But now, arriving at womanhood, we look, hack on our happy sohool days hi sadness, and ask is this the future that we bad painted in bright colors and hung up on the walls of Imagination? In Whittler's Maud Muller appears the following beautiful couplet: "Of all sad words of tonpue or pen The saddest are these It might nave been." ' These words strike a sympathetic chord in the human heart, which speaks their truth. They tell of sweet hopes and illusions checked and chilled; of love and trues, affection blighte l; of ambitious dreams that never had a real being; of disappointment and vanity of earthly things. Fewlniife's retrospect have not said as they look back on the long vista of years and found some crushed hopes, : "It might have been." Few have met with such perfect lives and met with such a full fruition of content, that they have lost nothing, and may not cry out with re gretful tears "It might have been." Few nave taken such an advantage of the circumstances that effect our hap piness as not to feel in the secret recess es of their hearts, "Itmlghthavebeen." Disappointment is the grim monster that preaches from the text to all. Life is a failure in some particulars to all, and we are not without an excep tion. It might have been far happier and better had a different course of ac tion been pursued had we more truly known the line of duty and traveled the path of virtue. Bat we cannot see the coming events that cast their shad ows" before if we could, "It might have been" far better had we never wandered from that dear old home. How many a thoughtless woid would have remained unspoken? how many a deed never been executed? how many an action been unperformed could we have foreseen the consequences, and after troubles they would bring? No four words were ever put together that express more misery, convey a greater sense of pain, "It might have been." 'Tiswell the future is not revealed to us erring mortals let it remain as it is in oblivion...- . s. ;. "Oh 1 tls welt that God oermtts us not To Uft the vail that hides the future, shd them reau our lute. t . For In ignorance of woes to como we hope for happiness. Carter's Planing Mill. A few days ago we were shown through the large and commodious planing mill and sash and door factory of E. Carter At Co. The proprietors have recently thrown aside their engine aud substi tuted water power, refitted their whole building, and put up new and the latest improved machinery in place of that which they have formerly used, mak ing their factory perhaps the largest and best this side of Portland. It will pay a person well to take a look through their factory for the purpose of seeing the improvements the enterprising pro prietors have made. . Our elegant young friend, Ed Carter, is superinten dent of (be mill and will take' great pleasure in filling your orders, or in showing you the working of the ma chinery. Trade remains quiet, In a retail wav, but the wholesale houses of Portland report fair business in supplying country mer chants. Farming classes being confined to'their work! makes country trade light at present. In a local way, all kinds of build ing matorial is in demand and mechanics all busy. There is no now feature in the grain trade to note, save a steady market at last week's quotations, and a little better feeling as to future prospects. Nothing definite from the old world to indicate a very material advance in prices, though the opinion pre vails that prices can not decline. The advance of the tariff on overland freights, by tho combination of the C. P. A U. P. Railroads, and the P. M. S. S. Co, will work a hardship upon wool growors as the increase is supposed to be equal to about t wo cents a pound on wool. This, for the amount of wool on the Paeifio coast, will make quite a bonanza for the com panies. But the hardship to wool growers Is not all tho trouble. The high rotes of overland freights will cause large ship ments via Cape Horn, and advance the rates of tonnago generally. More than likely grain charters will advance as the result of this combination, from two to three dollars a ton, on Livorpool oharters. This will take oil from six to nine cents a bushel on our next year's crop. Following aro the latost advices from the Boston wool market, under date of tho 17th instant: There has bocn a fair amount of business in wool, but the trade continues unsat isfactory.
