FRIDAY FEBRUARY 12, 1875. 1 . PILOT TVYMK. W -1, Ufa on the "Old Dlassaslpp." I" ' .. BI DAN DB QCTLLE. " fA's you till know, it was in 1859 that I made my famous "triumphal" start frohi the good old city of St. Quis, Missouri, on the steumor Bully Arabia for Now Orleans, and now, I propose to briefly inform you why I never planted foot anywhere within five hundred miles of New Orleans. "; " The story is of still another ease ef coolness in the midst of wreck and disaster, and prmaipally relates to "Pilot Wvlie." The Sullii Arabia, Captain Sam Bovvcn (well known at St. Louis and all up and down ' Ilia river) le t tit. Louis with "all below" .full of hay in lraies. ', We crot off about the middle of the afternoon all rikiit and went bowling along down the river at a slashing ruto. As long as daylight we did well daylight and the pilot who was tnen at trie wheel. Some time along in the night Pilot Wylie was called up to take his watch. He came up full of Bourbon as the lower deck was full of hay, but kept his mouth uliut and looked wise. Captdin Ram Bowen was as all know who lnve ever traveled much on the lower JiiRbisippi onu of the tnildcst and most eveu-tempered men in the world. He was also very po lite and gentlemanly in his iuter couine with all of his officers and men. Il appeared to be positively painful for him to swear, but some- times, in the dischargo of his duties, it became necessary for him to' do . that violence to his feelings. Captain Boweu did not discover that there was anything wrong with Pilot vVylie when that gentleman came up to tale the wheel. We went booming along down the liver at a great rate, carrying a full head of steam aiid with Wylie at the wheel, turning it back and forth in the most eedalo and exemplary man ner. Presently we sloshed into the loft bank of tlio river against some troe3 and tore out the barber-shop. Up rufihod Captain Bowen, crying: "Mr. Wvlio, how is this? You have been into the bank and have raked out the barber-shop!" j "Yes," said Wylie, "I heard a sort oi a rip as 1 boio oil from shore. On wo went again for eight or ton miles, when we slapped into the right-hand shore and tore out the pantry. . .Captain Bowen ran up to1 the pi , lot-house in hot haste. ."Well, Mr. Wylie," said ho, "you are playing hell-to-night!" ' "Yes," said Pilot Wylie, "did you ever hear such a rattling of dishes in all your life!" Without deigning a reply Cuplsiu '. Boweii turned and went below, while Wylie went un with his "serowin' on her up," as a Y;iukeo passenger termed the business ol steering , Uio vessel. " ' Away wo went, howling J ami screeching down the river, with the black sinoko streaming buck from the chimneys.'. '. - . t ::: , Wylie was industriously engaged in "sciewiu1 on her up," nnd in ring ing the engineer's bolls "tap, tap, tap I" now this way and now that only stopping occasionally to slip a small Husk out of his pocket and take a "nip." Presently the engineer sung out from below through the speaking tube " "Mr. Wylie, no man ill the world couhl niake out lliuno bolll" "Tho bells are all rightl Mind the bolls!" sehteutiuusly ausworod back Pilot Wyli.1. ' A few minutes after, as we went zigzagging down the river, we "pick 0.1 up" a siiug that ripped nearly the wjiolo bottom out of tho boat. ; , ,( There wo stuck", rapidly Bottling in about eight feet of water. Cuplaiu Bowen bounded up to tho pilot-house and said: "AVoll, Mr. Wylie, by Ood I sir, you've made a killing of it this tiniol" "Yes," said Wvlie, "I think so. Do you sro them bales o' hay a-lloat-iflg out of her?" "She's down in eight foot of wator, Mr. Wylie," said the Captain. "About that I should think, sir," said Wylie. ' After making this remark, Pilot Wylie "lit out ovor the front," and going down into tho "texim," got his old iiddlc, wlion he sat down nud went to playing tho "Arkansas Trav eler." flis busino.H was finished, and he was indulging in his favorite rec reation. A Bice moss we were in I How ever, about ftu hour after tho snag ging' of the bout, wo heard some distance down tho river a fearful howl from a steam whistle. "The Gtiuvual the llluiicut!" cried several of tho passengers in a breath. "No other boat Ins such a whistlo. It is the GlaiuuK coming up!" 'This was not the old Glauciu, as she was burned at St. Louis iu 18"ii3 or 1K,";), but was a now (llaucut, built by the sunm owners and provided with a second edition of the same unearthly whistle which rendered tho old tHaueui famous all along tho Mississippi. Well, we made signals of distress and the Clttueut came alongside, when we passengers were soon trans ferred to her docks. "Mr. demons," said Captiu Bow en, addi'CHHinr the pilot of the Olait cu Samuel L. Clemens, now better known as Hark Twain "Mr. Clem ens, I can hardly understand how you could recommend Mr. Wylie to .... i . me as neiiifr a irmui , un "I recommended Wvlie tobrr. not Wylie drunk," dryly ausworod Mr, Clemens. "Well, you see what he lias done Willi the JluHy Arubia ? He has kill ed her, sir I" "I hoe," said Mr. Clemens, "but Le docs not appear to bo utterly broken-hearted, as I hear him playing tho same old tune that he used to play whim I was a 'cub' undor him." Tho Ulaurui safely landed us at Bt. Louis, and I never again attempt ed the trip to New OrUuns, nor never again met Pilot Wylie, who, for aught I know to the contrary, may still le seated in the "texas" of the v. K f"Ki"l Jlitbj Arabia, sawing away nt its "Arkansas Traveler." 'onwr want a mvontue That BrWnjrArmaa Jneme.se from ''Bar' Creek." She wsntfd to see the "local editor," sav s a Denver paper. The seat of the man i-he wanted to see, he smilingly assured her, and lost no time in being suddenly culled away, lis "wanted to see Ljie local himself, he said; hut he would call again." Ditk Briggs stood at the door, looking at the "old man's" outfit, and wondering what llie tall rawboned, diinhle-linied young man was listening and waiting for. Diok is not our ' local," although ho does do a little that way sometimes, when he can please a lady, for Dick, whi'e Ira is an unmiiigaltd bore about tho ollice, is a good naiured fellow and as gallant as Hon Quixote. llie "local ' whispered to Dick that thero was a lady inside who desired to see him about that report of the policemen's hall. Dick was b'jck in the editorial room as iiuick as hVh. The tall, rawlmued ranchman glided rapidly after him, the "local'1 wailed in the rear. She rose and bobbed a stiff courtesy as Dick marched proudly in, ami made one ol his bewitching bows. "Are you the local editor'" said the mountain mmizoii, Dick bowed as he made his apology lor seeping ner waiting. "Did you write that ere about me':' holding out a paper folded back. Dick, supposing it was his ball re port, and that the lady was about to present him her thanks and perhaps something olno, made that latal bow. Max Adeler has a friend named Slimmer, who deserves pity. He was going up to Beading, not long since, and when reaching the depot, he happened to look in the ladies room. A woman sat there with a lot of baggage and three children. and when she saw Slimmer sho rush ed toward him, and, before ho could defend himself, sljo threw her arms about his neck, nestled her bead upon his ureast, and Durst mtc tears, blinr rucr was amazed, indignant, con founded; and ore ho could liud utter ance for his feelings, she exclaimed : "0, Henry ! dear Henry ! we are united at last.' Aro you well? Is Aunt Martha still alive? Haven't you longed to see your own Louisa?" And she looked into Slimmer'sfaco and smiled through her tears. "Madam," said he, solemnly, "if I avn the person alluded to as Henry, permit me to say that you have made a mistake. My name is Lemuel, 1 huvo no Aunt Martha, and I don't own a solitary Louisa. Oblige me by letting go my. coat; it excites re marks." Then she buried her bonnet deeper into his wuistcoat, and began to cry harder than ever, and said : 0, Henry, how can you treat me so? How can you pretend that you arc not my husbund ? 'Madam, screamed Shmmor," if you don't ctase slopping my ehirt uosom, nnu remove your umbrella from my corn, I shall be obliged to call the police. And then they gitibhed Slimmer iy his trousers legs and huntr to his coat tail. "W oman," he shrieked, this in getting serious. Unhand me I say." And ho tried to uiueugnge himself from hor embraco, while all the brakemen, and baggage-masters and newsboys, stood around, and said his conduct was infamous. In the midst of the struggle a stranger entered with n carpet-baa. He looked exactly like Slimmer and when ho saw his wife iu Sum mer's arms, vhe became excited, and fl-MiieJ Slimmer with that carpet bag, and sut'on him, and srnole his uoso, and caromed on his head, and asked hull what he meant. Slimmer was removed on a stretcher, nnd the enemy went oft with Ids wife and family in a cab. He called next day lo upologizo. His wife hod made the mistake because o' Sliminer's likeness to him. And now Slimmer wishes he may soon be kicked in the face by a niulo, so that ho will re semble no other human being in the world. Cost of the Wail Mr. David A.
