H. BAYMOKD, P. M. JL -n Help toR the SuFFEREKS.-'Tiie most deplorable accounts of suffering sod destitution among tlie people or Kansas and Nebraska still reach us, accompanied by imploring solicitations for assistance. Gen. Ota, (Juairmun of the-Nebraska relief committee, Havs! "In 16 counties we are feeding nearly 7,000 persons; and in ail the de vastated counties we are feeding 13,435, and the number daily increasing! Teams are dying of starvation for want of corn! Grass Is scant and hay poor, arid there Is no money to buy such as there is of either." In Kansas the sit uation is een more deolorable arid the number of destitute greater than in Nebraska. The chairmen of both the Kansas and Nebraska Committees say the articles most needed (after money) are blankets, bed covering, clothing or women and children, boots anil shoes, meats, cheese, beans, hominy, cracked wheat, onions, potutoes, dried fruit, sugar, molasses, coffee, etc., etc Will not our citizens make a com bined effort in collecting money, cloth ing and other articles ? Mr. Wyutt, resident agent of Wells, Fargo & Co.'s express, is, authorized to forward all contributions free. If a committee of ladies or gentlemen Or both would start things in our citv we believe they could soon make up a box of clothing and provisions which would make glad the hearts of many a, destitute family in those stricken regions. Who will have the honor of starting the good work-? , Extra Labob fob the Assessor. This will be a hard year's labor ou our County Assessors. .In addition to their usual anuual assessments, the law requires that they shall this year take the Census of their several coun ties, for which blanks will be furnished them by the Secretary of State. The census will comprise the following headings: No. legal voters; of males 21 years old and upwards; of limits un ,der 21 and over 10; of males under 10; of females 18 and upwards; of females under 18 and oyer 10; of females under 10; number of acres under cultivation; bushels of wheat, rye, barley, oats, Corn, potatoes and apples raised, hist year; tons of hay, pounds of wool and tobacco, ounces of gold dust produced; number of sheep, hogs, horses, cattle and mules owned by each person; number Of barrels of salmon, and i baskets of oysters sold; number of pounds of butter and cheese made and marketed, etc. In brder to assist the Assessor and facilitate his labors, we would suggest that our readers have these items written down and prepared for him by the time he comes around Of course it is understood this is not for the purposes of taxation, but for ' the dissemination of valuable informal tiou that this census is taken; hence our citizens heed have no fear of mak ing as good a showing as the facts will warrant. . . Be'autiful Works of Art. Mr. 3. M. Fisk inow canvassing tills city for the sale of Prang's ehromos, of which he has a most superb collection and a great variety. Prang's are the standard pictures in that most beauti ful art, being up to the highest state of perfection; and Mr. Fisk has the finest of Prang's copies. They are of sulli . clently large variety to suit the taste or conform to the purse of any one, hence Mr. F.'s sales are very extensive; -He also takes orders for picture frames of all designs and patterns," which he supplies at low rates. When not can vassing he can be found at the St. Charles Hotel, in this city. Don't fail to see his pictures. Albany School District. We tire, indebted to A. N. Arnold, Esq., Clerk of this school district, for the following census of the district for 1875, just finished by him: No. of males between the ages of 4 tmd 20 years, 282; No. females, 200; whole number, 572. Increase oyer last year, 63. No. not attending school during thppostyear, 110. Forty-foil.- of Ihe whole No. under 20 and over 4 years old attended the College during the yeariand20 attended private school. There are 286 persons who vote in the school meetings of the district. t A Suggestion. We understand that somebody hereabout is sending away oft to Ohio for job work. Is tills the way to treat your friends at home? A citizen who will do that ought to be compelled to rely on Ohio people alone for support and patronage, 'there are two job printing offices in Albany, run by citizens who pay taxes, contribute to public charities, and assist in vari ous ways in enhancing the interests of our community; and they ought to be patronized in preference to foreign in stitutions. Come, friends! Let's "live and let lire." That Poob Cow. It is said, that there is in our town a mileh cow, j milked at least once a day by her, owner, that is so ntfar Htirved for some suitable food that she will follow after, j and bawl at a woman wearing a green or straw-eolored dress. The attention! It is expected that all the stock holders will be present and participate in the meeting. By-the-woy, Mr. Carter informs us that some of the shares necessary to effect an organiza tion aro not yet taken; and as this is a most important enterprise wo earnest ly urge our Citizcis to come forward and take "up the necessary number of shares at ml early day. Pax- ton has the agency for this State, for tlie Little Monitor sewing machine, and has gone to Portland to commence business. This machine is a new in vention, and is claimed to, be a great deal superior to. the other machines. It is nearly noiseless in running, and a great deal of time and labor is saved by not having to wind tlie thread upon a bobbin the thread being taken from the under spool while the machine is running the same as it is from the up per spool on other midlines. We wish .Mrs. Paxton tile best of success. Chinese New Yeab was celebrated with much eclat in this city, last Sat urday. Fire crackers were recklessly exhausted, roast pig and fowl were lavishly served and wines and liquors) disposed freely to all Melican men who j could be induced to accept of the Mon golians' hospitality . Several of our citizens lost their dislike for the "Ilea- then Chinee" at sight of the frugal and I tempting "lay-out," and partook freely of grub and grog, which the same it; caused John to kick up his heels with ; much jubilation and fervently declare himself "allee fame Meliean man;" j From Ochoco. Abe Hackloman j received a letter from Ochoco, written j nn the 20th ult.. by his nephew. Win. 1 If. Jackvin, which says that the weather over there is cold and stormy. Editor Democrat : Thinking t few lines from this part of tlie world might be of Interest to you I set me dowu to the task. The Christian denomination is hold ing a protracted meeting in South Brownsville. There has been no cloth ing wet so far, but we don't know what may happen yet ill the way of a revi val, for you know the .good Book says,' "God is able of these stones to raise up seed unto Abraham." One of our youngsters at church the other night passed around the crackers rat her freely, much to the annoyance of some of our worshipful brethren who received sundry knocks on their heads. They had him taken before his Excellency, Squire Thompson, where he was lined ten dollars and costs. I read with much interest your re ply to Brother McDonald, of the Salem Statesman, ou the Gcrraud case. We all lu "this neck" think he should have fteen banged. I dou't think the Statesman as it is very improperly called will veWre out on that sub ject again. Farmers are getting their plows, har rows and farming implements ready for Spring use prepatory ,to putting in large mops of grain and flax. Our neighbors up ill "Gougers" met with a great loss a week ago in tlie person of Uucle Tommy Fields, He held a position high up in the church of Jesus Christ of Litter Day Saints or Mormons, and professed to heal by layiiig on of tlie hands, but it could have been properly said in his case, "Physician, heal thyself." In 'him tlie Mormon church sustained a great loss. In glancing over the February number of this magazine wo hnd it to be un in teresting number, embracing a table of contents varied by fact and fiction the former making history, and In do ing so exhibiting a true and firm at tachment for its motto of "devoted to tlie development of the country;" and the latter fulfilling its purpose of plac ing some of itbe very best sketches of a local and foreign character produced in any similar puplication. "The Kearsarge and the Alabama," the first article, is a'vivid description of this famous lieht, by an eye-witness; loi lowed by a characteristic local sketch, ) Sagibru.sl n.ribuu-s a i cou.ribin.es a poem, "lo tlie J-ion oi Venice;" Charles W. Miss Mollie Stevens, aged iil years, was followed to the grave by a large concourse of mourning friends She was a daughter of William and Anna S'evens, of Wisconsin and sister of Mrs. Dr. Vincent, of Corvallis. She was a music teacher, a young lady of much beiuty, reflnement and culture, and leaves a 'broken hearted young man, to whom her maiden troth was solemnly pledged, to mourn her death. Not Original. There has beeu a separation between an up-town lover and his sweet-heart. She presented him with her photograph, which he, on his bended knees, swore he would always wear next to his heart. Whle making his last Sunday evening call, he pulled out his handkerchief from his back pants pocket, when, lo! the photograph fell at the lady's feet. She says he is either a liar or his heart is not in tlie right place. : Paralysis. Tbe friends of Milton Beach, of Buena Vista, Will be pained to learn that he has been stricken with paralysis, which affects one entire side of Ills body. An accident which he received by being thrown from a stage coach between this place and Portland, some years ago, is thought to bo the cause of his present affliction. As soon as he Is able to be moved he will be brought to his father's house in this city. We have just rejeived a Monthly Journal of art, misic and literature, published by Sherman & Hyde, San Francisco. Get your "honey-comb" ready for the Anniversary Ball. Carothers & Co. will make more soda water than anybody this summer. Prof. Foshay has some of the hearty smushingest valentines we ever did see. We last week saw a specimen of quartz from the Jackso.i county mines which is said to have assayed 5800 to the ton. Monty Monteitli fell down while run ning the other day and damaged the cap of his knee so that he is laid up for a few days. ' Now is the time for newspaper, fel lows to dive down lu their strap book and find out who invented Valentine's Day and what for. Jim Harris last Monday butchered the fattest beef we ever saw. The fat ty deposits were thicker than a carpet bagger's conscience. A fellow says he is red hot at us about a receu't item iu the Democrat He can get cooled down or go to heaven iu a hand basket just as it suits him. Some terrific typographical blunders appeared iu our eulumus last week, which was owing mainly to a scarcity of help and iu haste to make connec tion with the mails. Whilo at Salem the latter part of last week we tried skating everybody else was doing it, you know. But lind Ing we hadn't got the skates on our right end, we just quit. Our large and constantly increasing circulation makes the Democrat a most desirable advertising medium. Clever merchants and business men would do well to remember this. Easter Sunday comes on apace, and tlie hens are growing pale in their exertions to supply the market with eggs. A hen who would lay colored eggs would command a premium. It is a singular coincidence Hint everybody we owe wants us to settle up and most of those who owe us don't say anything about it. Lemme see: Why is this thus, and If so wherefore V At tt union meeting of the religions denominations of this city, held in the M. E. Clnipel last Sabbath night, a collection of $40.50 was taken up to aid in tlie circulation of the Scriptures. We ain't a Granger and can't tell a lie, hut we would say Hint those peo ple who owe us various sums from tlireo dollars up would be received at tliis office with much show of hospi tality just now. That llarrisburg rooster wjio was assassinated over the head with a salt suck full of oats the other night, while leaving a certain house, is informed that we don't know his name. It we did we wouldn't make mention of the u flair. Our young lady compositor, Miss Halbrook, and our pressman, Mr. John Spangler, have both been unable to work for tlie past week because of illness, hence the lust issue of our pa per was a little late lu getting ill the mails, and this may share the same fate. Such, mishaps are unavoidable. We bear of a nice joke on one ol our farmer friends out in the country . He started out a duck hunting a few 'daysngo, and in twenty-four shots suc ceeded Incripplliigoneduek. Iiehnp- pened to think then that the game law was ill effect, so he stopped his work of slaughter and went home; re solving to abide by the new law. A Flunky's Mutton Exposed. A hotel waiter the other day under took to perpetrate a fraud on the poet of tho Democrat. He gave our Pe gasus a slice of the original old "Daryb Ram" and called it "lamb chops breaded;" and here is how our ready muse annihilated that fraudful hotel man: Mary had an old white nhrop, It was by maa bhf;nled; ,-l as brought U this despised hotel.
