tmtnV Oive us AN Item. Newspaper men have many things to discourage then! and render this a moat unsatisfactory world to live in. There is one tutu, however, that caps the clihla of all j!.,.ni,rmments. and that Is to race all over town in quest of items, only to be rowarrled with fust no Jtenis at an, The reading public are possessed of but little conscience. They expect so much now pverv week, and if occurrences out of which journalists weave their items are scarce, tuey are very apt 10 grumble, and accuse editors of want of enterprise, me common occurreucun ot every day life, if written for each Jsstie, soon become monotonous to the actors themselves, ana items inererore. out of the ordinary Hue are as essen tial to the life of a newspaper as food and rest is to the man. Occasionally a sympathizing .creature falls from the roof of a building and breaks ms nocK or jabs a knife into the stomach of his neighbor, and makes matters lively for the newspapers for a brief period; Dut, unfortunately for the Journalists these jpeoimens of the genus philanthropic in this locality are exceedingly scarce in fact as much so as -hen's teeth. The acoidnt record for a tim, was such as to satisfy the propensity for th sensational of the most rapacious writer; but the disposition on the part of our citizens to sacrifice their lives and limbs for the benefit of the Demo crat has sadly diminished. With tears in our eyes we appeal to our gen erous readers to do something, and that at once, to relieve the dull monotony that has settled upon our town. Give us a street fight, a genuine murder, a .Beecher-Tilton atfaiu-in fact any thing, that we may be able to make the columns of the Democbat as Inter estlng and hilarious as the average reader can desire, or else We will be compelled to get up some sensation on our own hook. . n , "Stick Together. We asked a dis tinguished citizen of Salem the other day, "How is it that your city has al ways managed to get away with most of the publio edifices and enterprises of the commonwealth of Oregon, while even more eligible towns and locali ties are always left out In the cold?" His answer was brief but pointed: "Whenever we of Salem Want any thing we go for Ic with all ou might, and all pull together till we get it." That Is the true secret of Buccess in the career of any town or community. We cannot refrain from saying, in this con nection, that we of Albany have been derelict In this most Important partic ular. This should not be, and no com munity cat; prosper unless this spirit is thrown aside and a unity of senti ment and action takes its place among our citizens. It is always the best policy to speak well of your own town, to liberally patronize every Industrial and mechanical enterprise in it The true theory of all progress, whether as related to nations, Statas, or communi ties, is to bring the' agricultural and manufacturing and mechanical inter ests in ciose relntionsliin to each other, to the end that there may always be a circulating medium, aquahty of money at home that will keep the wheels of commeroe in motion. To foster and encourage home mechanics and mer chants is to lay the egg that hatches out the spunky game cock of prosper ity. Fast Stock on the Ground. Last Monday, by Invitation of two Jacks (Titus and Crouse) we took a spin out to the Fair Grounds, where we found several horses already in training for the coming Exposition. Ted. Whit field' is training his sorrel pacer, "Schonehln," who made tilings so very lively for the foreign roosters last year. Wm. Gird is working four horses, viz: "Shoo-fly,"apacer owned by S. Mont gomery; "Bill Gird," a running borse, and "Antelope" and "Bones," trotters all three owned by Mr. Gird, M. A. Wallace is training his own trotter, "Lady Mack," as well as two beauti ful goers of Jas. Harris's, "Prince" and "Dolly." Other animals are expected to b on the Grounds in a short time. By-the-way, we noticed on the. Grounds one of the prettiest specimens of minia ture horse flesh we have ever seen, in the shape of a colt, aged 4 months, owned by Wm. Gird, and sired by "Eph May hard" from the Messenger Mare, "An telope." The colt Is perfectly built, Of most symmetrical propbrtionS! and already skims over the ground at a Very little less than Goldsmith Maid's time. Mr. Gird has named the little" beauty after his elegant friend, "Jack Zeller Crouse," who is himself an en thusiastic admirer of superior equine iniity. Serenade. to a party of Trouba doursProf. Francis, Will. Peters, H. Griffin and Jay Blaln and Misses Alice Griffin, Aurelia Blaln) Gertie Holmes and Mary Hannon the Dem ocrat folks are indebted for a most ravishing serenade during the "wee tint' hours" Of Wednesday night The Instrumental selections were of the rarest kind, while the quartette, "Dreaming of Thee," rippled out on the midnight air in sweetest cadences, charming the listener Into a dreamy reverie fit only to be disturbed by the "Perl of Paradise" or the charmed harp of jEolus. Campmeetino at Lebanon. Rev. C. A. Trooley, pastor of Lebanon Cum berland Presbyterian Church, author ises us .to announce that on Friday, Sept. 18th, a campmeetlng will begin at the camp ground near that village, to which a cordial invitation is extend ed to the christian and general public. This bright, piquant. and valued ladies' periodical flashes its September appearance before its pat rons in all the golden glory of the early autumn time. How any lady can be without "Pe.erson" is a mystery tons. tST For the very best Photographs, go to Bradley A Rulofson's Gallery with an ELEVATOR, 128 Montgomery Street, Pan Francisco. An AMPirtaoca Bat. Our digni fied friend, Judge B., of this city, has developed into an eminent rat stayer, or rather he thought he had until last Monday, when he suddenly awoke to the' reality that instead of himself having the rats, the rats had got him bad. He 1 es on Gospel Midge, near where the tiauttam Canal empties its turbid contents Into the raging Call poola, the water falling over a preci pice some IS or 20 feet high; and he has been in the habit of taking the live rats from his little wire, trap and throwing them into the canal just above the falls, so that he may enjoy the fiendish delight of seeing them dis appear down the raging, boiling, seeth ing precipice, to find a watery grave In the placid Ijosoin of the sluggish Cali pooia. And then the Judge would go hack to the bouse and tell Mrs. B.,with gleeful satisfaction,, how the rodent quadruped disappeared despairingly over the falls, never to return to savory pastries and other pumpkin pies. But alas for -larder! alas for Judge! lie last Monday lingered too long on the bank of the river, just below the falls, after casting the morning's "catch" into the Canal; and his astonishment and ohag: rln can bo better imagined than des cribed when he saw the limp) wet, be draggled little rat climb nimbly up the rivers' bank and take a bee-lihe for Its native haunts beneath Ms own kitchen floor. The Judge walked sadly and sorrowfully back to the house, determ ined that Mrs. B. should not know of his great (failure; yes, in the; heart rending language of Enoch Ardeu, he resolved " ' "Not to toll her ' Never to let her know I" But she saw the sorrowful return Of the mournful procession herself, and has at last succeeded in convincing the Judge that he has been catching and drown ing the same rat for the past twelve month. At Astoria. T. J. Beard writes us from Astoria that he likes our paper better tlian anybody, as doeseverybody else who Is not an admirer of a journ alistic funeral procession. However, the above is only parenthetical, and doesn't figure in what we intended to say for public perusal, and tbat is that the mammoth Farmer's warehouse down there is about completed, and nearfy ready for the reception of a half mlllioD bushels of grain. One boat load of wheat has already arrived there, in remarkably good shape. Double floors' have been put down throughout the building, so that there will be no possible danger qf loss by leakage. It occurs to us that our farmers who can Afford to Hold their grain for a higher price would vastly profit by shipping to Astoria and storing there, and thus be prepared to take advantage of any sudden and spasmodic rise in the mar ket. , The "TlilrtLE Thunderer." That distinguished Pacific Coast Jour nalist, Calvin B. McDonald, nowof the Salem Statesman, paid our office sev eral friendly calls while sojourning during the past ..eel; in our cily. He is taking a short respite from the ardu ous labors of his profession, and very wisely seleeted our beautiful city and healthful atmosphere as a suitable and desirable locality for that purpose. Of couise his busy pen is not silent, as he is contributing some valuable articles to his paper, descriptive of the dis tingulshing features and unparalleled attractionsof Albany and Linn county. The Statesman Is fast gaining a const- wide popularity since his assumption of its editorial management. Sensible. The Otlumica Democrat twangs a responsive chord on our bow string in the following item: "We are in continual receipt of circulars, annoucements and catalogues from Va rious educational institutions through out the country evidently sent for the purpose of a favorable editorial notice but to which we cauuot give any at tention, simply because of the implied request to give them a gratuitous adver tisement. AH notices sent In a busi ness way for insertion will be consid ered at our lowest rates and given a wide publication; but we cannot afford to keep a corps of printers on band to setup free puffs for business enterprises of any sort." The Best Work Yet. We have recently uotiaed a gobd deal of boister ous blowing in our valley exchanges about grand harvesting achievements, but we don't know of any machine which can wax Cherry's Header, as witness the following example: Mart Miller, Ed. Trltes, Sam Crowder and L. C. Marshall have purchased and are now runni ng o Cherry Header (patented and manufactured by A. F. Cherry, of this city,) and last week they harvested 161 acres in less than six days. In one afternoon 6. hours of tbat time they cut 23 acres. The yield from the 181 acres was 3,304 bushels of wheat and 180 bushels orgeats. SouvEjmt or the Sea. We received by mall yesterday from Newport, on Yaquina Bay, four cards of pressed sea moss, from the artistic hands of our beautiful young friend, Miss Gertie Pierce, eldest daughter of Capt. Pierce, Light House Keeper at Yaquina Head. Miss Gertie has .become remarkably proficient and artistic in this beautiful accomplishment, and her specimens of handiwork have become the admira tion and wonder of all seaside wander ers. We make our most polite bow for these sweet souvenirs from the skillful band of "Light House Gertie.'1 Albany Colleoiatb Ixstitutb. Prof. A. 8. . McDonald, in the States man of last Wednesday, tells some thing of his present sojourn in Albany, from .which we make the following extract: ,. ; . , Aa yt, T have sought no opportunity to ob tain iniormttUon about 'he vuriouft lostitutious and Industries of Albany, and have contented myselr with viewing the exterior of the beauti ful homes many of them costly and stylish which abound here. Most of them eeera to have been newly painted, having vines nioeiy trained about the doors and windows, and richly laden fruit, trees all around. I wonder where all the poor people live? and where the wretched little hungry-looking and misshapen children of Want are stowed away? Have the readers of the Statesman ever reflected how very seldom they ever see an ugly. Ill-formed enna in this vaiu-y? or one to be compared with the hideous little distortions who swarm in the poorer quarters of great cities? What siuruy little limbs the I'acltlo Coast children have ! never a cripple, except through some unhappy accident ; no hump-backs; no rickets; no pitiful faces like those which made the poet cry out In the miserable lanes of London, "God! what bodies without souls 1" And the ex planation Is easy enough. The Oregon children are generally ol a good soundeitock, many of inein ucscenaea irom tne potter classes in the British Kingdom, their forefathers migrating gradually westward to New Kngland, to Vir ginia, to Ohio, to Missouri, Illinois, and thence to the uttermost west: never deteriorated by demoralizing vices, distorted by the Intemper ance of labor and the pluuhings of poverty, or poisoned hereditarily by habitual 'Intemper ance. I do not believe there aro two other towns of like dimensions In the whole hind where so many shapely and handsome young people are to be seen as are brought to view when the schools areoutin Halem and Albany ; and much of their physical perfection and beauty is owing to the wise forocast of the old settlers In putting down Intemperance and other social vices In the community. In these respects Oregon is absolutely the soberest hud purest State in the Union, and so far as ' my observation has oxtended, the vigorous beauty of her children is elsewhere uncounted not even In California, with all her accessions of wealth and climate. When the lady crusaders there started out on the war-path, they knew what they were about, and where their heredi tary enemy was to be found ; nnd they did not fall to reason with a mother's Instructive philosophy, when comparing their own feebler children with the sturdier, red-ohaeked daugh ters of Oregon. Th Sthte Rights Democrat. It is with pleasure that we announce that this sterling Democratic journal has entered upon its tenth volume, full of vigor, wit and prosperity as ever. The most prominent feature of its entrance Upon a new volume- is the accession of Mr. C. H. Stewart (who for the past seven years has been an employe In the ofllce, graduating in every department of the art, from deyil to assistant editor,) to a co-partnership with the popularwrlter Mart V. Brown. The Democrat is one ot the best papers on the Coast, and we learn will shortly become the official paperof the State. We wish the firm of Brown & Stewart the greatest success. -Jacksonville' Times, As Astonishing Feat of Eqcistiitan SHrf. Our friend Comley, of Pass Creek, went out and shot at a deer the other day, which fell as If killed, but when C. came close to It he found that it jas only "creased," and, determlu iniug to have it anyhow, be Jumped astride of its back, just as it sprung to Its feet and darted off through the woods. Comley held his grip on its antlers, wound his legs firmly around its body, ond rode that frightened animal several hundred yards; but at last the deer went under a fallen tree, instead of going over it, "and to pass there was such scanty room" even foK his deership, that Comley couldn't go too, but was suddenly and violently scraped off and left prostrate on the ground, where he lay stunned and almost breathless for nearly four hours before lie could summon, sufficient strength and wind to meander buck to his cabin. He has since been laid up with a sore chest and an extraordinary accummulation of "gum boils" on that part of his body which came in closest contact with the deer's back as lie rode. To Mrs. 8. No, that Is not the best way to keep a hired girl. . You must reserve the guest chamber for her beau, and your more common guest must sleep in the kitchen bed with the Chi nese cook. We see you have, in some way got the antiquated idea that a hired girl has no rights which you are bound to respect! No wonderyou have not been able to keep the same young lady with you more than two weeks. A woman who doesn't think it neces sary to supply her "help" with piano , privileges, and perfumery, and cologne, and tallow for her hair, and who Is eternally following her husband when be goes into the kitchen or pantry for a minute or two, is not eutitled to the rare luxury of a hired girl. You must read your Bible more closely and learn, as Jacob's first wife did, that-a hand maid is as necessary in a prosperous and well regulated household as is a talented pair of scissors to a country editor. Nest. Hides Shot. Ted Parker, just down from Douglas county, tells Us of a shooting scrape which occurred in Looking Glass valley last Sunday. It seems that a fellow named Cox has been "nest-hiding" with another man's wife out there, nijch to the chagrin of the husband; and last Sunday while Cox and the woman were walking together the husband stepped in front of them, drew a pistol and shot Cox three times in the abdomen, after which he mounted a horse, went to Roseburg and surrendered himself to the Sheriff, in whose custody he still remains. It is 'thought that Cox will die. ' Not So. Our statement last Week that 'Squire Arnold had his oil job wagon repainted and upholstered, is a glaring and most palpable mistake. It is a bran new wagon, constructed in a most excellent and skillful manner, and so far excels the old one that we don't tee how in the dickens we ever Came to make sucli an egregious blun der. The Squire may well fe'el proud bf his new harness and new wagon as well as I is Well earned reputation as the most accommodating expressman in the world. PerSOKaU Last Monday we received a pleasant visit from Hon. J. W. Mrs. Mattie Hoon and family have returned to their Walla Walla home after a protracted visit to friends in this city. Somebody burglarized Frank Mil ler's bouse, in BovinePoucb, last week, getting away with a watch and a clean boiled shirt. ' Our dear old friendj"Maydr" Pilbeah, of Newport-on-Yaquiiia, sent to us by Mrs. Cheadle a fine supply of fresh sal mon, for which we weep much saline' gratitude. This Issue of the Democrat is the "last rose of summer," and next week's number will usher In the season of the "sere and yellow leaf" and other warm bed clothes. S. J. Archibald has the thanks of the Democrat family for a rare treat in the plum line. They were the finest assortment yet thrown in sight at these newspaporlal apartments. Messrs. E. D. Sloan and Geo. Young are erecting Dr. Plummer's new busi ness house, on First street. Its dimen sions are to be 20x40, and it will be used as a drug store, we believe. We saw a youngster last Tuesday trying to Imitate the borse tamer, Tapp, but some how the youth got a tap from the colt's heels which satis fied him that he wasn't a success in that lino. Mr. Dickens told a story of a young lady who, being Intensely loved by five young men, was advised to jump over board and marry the one who Jumped iri after her. Accordingly, next morn ing, the five lovers being on deck, and looking very devotedly at the young lady, she plunged Into the sea head foremost. Four of the lovers imme diately jumped in after her. When the young lady and four lovers were out again, she says to the Captain, "What am I id do with them now, they are so wet?" "Take the dry one." And the young lady did, and married him. Acrobatic Enoch Sloan is now regarded as a first class acrobat. While working on Plummer's building, last Tuesday, he fell about 15 feet, turning a double back summerset in the descent and lighting oh the northeast tip of his left ear, where he stood if! an Inverted attitude on the head of a six-penny nail for several secortfls. We are glad to be able -to state that his attendant physician Is not likely to have a win ter's Job of It The Mammoth Warehouse of Newby A Sex, at the depot, is now fully completed, and ready for the re ception of grai n.
