This state made a racs strictly on the civil rights question, Nashville and Memphis, which have been under Eadical rule ever since the war, have carried the election by the Democrats and , eoa Gcrvatires. , Memphis has a majority of 3,000.,, ' . '',.,'..... . Kentucky is overwhelmingly Dem ocratic. Viclcsburg, which 'has been ruled by negroes and Radicals for many years, has been redeemed' by tho Democrats. The gun which . Oregon - fired in June is being re-echoed in the early autumn campaigns, and by the time tho Ides of November shall speak of grand Democratio victories our Ead ical friends will awake to a knowl edge' of the fact that the 'dead De mocracy" have secured a majority in the Jjower House of the next Con gress. - - ' . ; ; ' . , . Vim Uill,ll' voHXtiH, , ,," Somebody somewhere has gotten up a corner in the wheat market, and it looks now as though our, farmers were to bo chiseled out of a fair price for this year's production. . Wo don't think the thing can continue) -bow-ever. , The blockade must bo raised soon, and we have uj doubt our pro- ducers will yet realize 'a fair price for their grain. However, we would not hav(j tbma rely upon this assertion of ours to induce them to hold back after they have been offored a living price for their grain, as they can scarcely espect to receive as hand some a figure as they did last year. , A jocko lady and gentleman re cently married, lie at the point 'of aeamm jjovor, JN. It has alwayi been our special, de light to be on the most friendly and fraternal footingwith our. brethren of tho "quill and pastepot," no matter .what our political differences or bus iness rivalries may have been; and it is with sinuerest pleasure that we are daily able to note the growing suavity and expanding courtesy evinced be- twscn the- journalistic fraternity of Oregon. . In surveyinsr the whole newspaporial horizon of our State we can to-day scarcely discern a gather ing frown upon the placid page or a menacing fist shaken by even one in dignant brother. In fact the very re verse seems to be the order every body appearing to be excruciatingly sweet on everybody else, and appar ently exhausting the vocabulary in search of endearing adjoctives and flattering praises. Of course there must almost always be some obscure exceptions to the most .universally prevalent order of things, and they are to be found in this "Journalistic Millenium;" but with the exception of a little local disturbance between the two live littlo Salem dalies wherein , tho classics' expressions, 'Morning Dab," and "Evening Dia per," are the very harshest epithets brought into requisition not a ripple of discord nor a wavo of trouble rolls across the peaceful breast of Oregon journalism Indeed it seems like the Satan of newspaperdorn was at last bound in niilleiiial chains, and that patient forbearance, fraternal love and Christian communion were here after to be the distinguishing traits of the repentant brotherhood of the North Pacific. '' ' 1 This Is indeed a refreshing season in the: erstwhile turbulent career of our newspaper experience -a bright oasis m the desert of Oregon parti san journalism; and if it will 'only continue a little whilo longer pur readers may entertain the fond hope of seeing a Sunday School column m the Democrat and a standing' hymn of praise, at the galde end of the editorial department. . . Moral: - Now is a good time to pay your subscription. - ,", AMENDS HONOItABLK. A few weeks ago during the jtime that our attention was engrossed in election matters an item cretJtvntc our columns reflecting upon the jpur ndlistic career and financial standing of that eminent Democratic journal' ist.'M. M.. Pomeroy. , The allegations contained in the item . were taken from an exchange, and had been going the rounds of the press for some tune. Since the publication of it in the Democrat we have received a courteous letter from "Brick," in which he calls our attention to the article and insists that the assertions therein contained are untrue. We sincerely regret that our columns should have been instrumental in fulminating slanderous allegations against so distinguished and able an advocate of Democratic principles as our brother, "Brick." We give place to this frank recantation of the spec ifications enumerated in the item re ferred to so that "Brick" may have no roason to complain that the amende honorable was not made in as public and conspicuous a manner as were the charges complained of. Since writing the foregoing our at tention has been ct'led to an article in Pomeroy'i Democrat, referring in indignant terms to the item referred to and alluding to the editor of this papor in harshest epitaphs. Well. we don't design making any correc tions, because pf .this indignant out burst from "Brick," but will only add that if he chooses to accept the apology in the spirit in which it is offered, there will be no cause-for further hostility -between us-two Brothers in more relations than one tho carriage broke and the vohiu'l. rolled rapidly down the steen staiIo tt struck against the side of the " bridge, tore off the roiling, and went over the nbycg fifty feet deep.
