to bail In the sum of $3,000, which,

here he will languish until the spring

most sickening case. His daughter

her father was the cause of her ruin
that he had been having illicit inter

iibe is about 18 years of age, the oldest
of nine children.' We understand that
the lecherous old wretch, Poe, freely
confesses his guilt, and-says that he
will not make any defense before the
Court for Ills foul orimo. He has been
ft resident of this county for many
years, for the past two of which he lias
been a tenant upon Judge Tandy's
farm near Harrisburg.

Arrested. Our readers will re
jnember that last week we gave an ac
count of a most revolting case of incest,

parties concerned were withheld for
ubvious reasons. Since that time the
Sheriff has arrested the man who is
- 3arged with the crime and he Is now
In jail. His name is Harding Dawson
nd the unhappy woman who is the
v tim of his lust is Mrs. Delia Backus
formerly Delia. McDermott. Sho is
1 df-sister to Dawson, and some fifteen
. are his Junior. A preliminary ex
amination of the accused was had at

consuming three days in the trial last
week, and attracting the olirtast undi
vided attention of the Portlanders, tiie
jury rendered o verdict of" "Guilty"
against Dr. Glass, charged with causing
the death of Mary llardman in aa at
tempt to produce an abortion. A mo
tion far a new trial was made but It is
hardly probable that one will be grant
ed. The Doctor (God save the mark !)
will most probably serve the State In
the capaoity of an-involuntary laborer
for a term of years the longer the
better.
Mr. Chas; Mealey, charged with
complicity in the affair, secured a
change of venue to this county, and
will not be tried until the March term
of our Circuit Court. His friends are
quite sanguine of his acquittal.
Complimentary. The Mercury of
last week pays the following handsome
compliment to our fellow citizen. Dr.
Houghton: "His Excellency, Govern
or Grover, has -appointed Dr. H. J.
Houghton, of Albany, Surgeon-General
of the Oregon Volunteer Militia, In the
place of Dr. Chapman, removed. The
many friends of Dr. Houghton, will
agree with us when we Bay that no
better appointment could have been
made. He Is a man of fine medical at
tainments, a thorough scholar, a Dem
ocrat, and a gentleman in every ac
ceptance of the term, and this mark of
his Excellency's esteem and confidence
will be duly appreciated, not only by
Dr. Boughton himself, but by his
many personal friends throughout the
State." - '

Railroad AccideUt. Yesterday
while tho down freight train was"
maneuvering on the switch at Albany
depot, a brakesman named M. H.
Ward, in stepping between two cars
for the purpose of uncoupling them,
got his foot on the track, and one
wheel immediately passed over it,
crushing the 'foot in a distressing
manner, producing three fractures on
bones across the centre of the foot.
Drs. Bice and Boughton attended the
man and dressed the wound, yand 'In a
few weeks, with proper care' it is ex
pected that the bones will knit to their
proper place and the foot be ablo for
its accustomed duty.
Horrible. A gentleman who re
sides nerfr Scio informs the. Mercury
that the wife of Albert Bond, residing
near that place, was terribly burned
about a week ago, under the following
circumstances: She was feeling some
what ill and laid down before tho fire
and fell asleep. Soon a stick of wood
rolled down, which set fire to her
clothes, completely burning them off
of her, and injuring her to such an ex-
tnnt. that for a time lier Jilo was
despaired of. Even her woolen under
clothes were burned ol, At last ac-
oount she was in a fair way to recover.
LECTURE.-Prof. J. D. White, of
Kentucky, will lecture In Paciilo
Opera IIous6 on Saturday evening, the
29th inst., varying the entertainment
with pleasing recitations. The Pro
fessor will appear in Corvallis, about
Monday evening, Deo. 1st, and from
thence will go to Monmouth, Dallas,
McMinnville, Lafayette, Forest Grove
and Hillsboro, thence overland to
California. He delivered a lecture In
this city a few weeks ago, in which he
impressed our citizens as being an
elocutionist of more than average merit
and culture.

Tonnage. We counted no Jess than
twelve ships at Portland last Friday
most of them being under charter to
convey wheat to Liverpool. Their
estimated capacity is ten thousand
tons. This is the' largest number of
ships, we believo, that have over been
in that port at one time. Several
other foreign vessels Bent on the same
mission, are expected to arrive shortly.
Commercial College. Prof. Tay
lor Is receiving high encomiums from
all classes at the successful manner in
which he is conducting his most
admirable school. His system of book
keeping Is universally commended as
being the most convenient as well
the most easily mastered, and his pen
manship is unexcelled.
Failed to Agree. The cose of the
.State vs. Chas. Miller, for assault with
a rlniiiri.mna wenrton on Slater, at
Jefferson, last summer, was tried In
Salem this week,-and the jury, after
being out all night failed to agree and
were discharged. The case goes over
until next term.

This city has a Union fa-bath school
in running order, which was organized
Oct. 12, 1873, and during our District
Court last week, we had a Sunday
school concert, which, was largely at
tended and resulted in a collection of
$91,25, which was appropriated In the
purchase of an organ for the school.
By the way, we arc greatly indebted to
Father "Wilbur and the Hon. J. R.
Lewis and other members of the Bar
for their hearty co-operation in raising
the aboye amount of money on the oc

Wa had ten days of court here, and
by the usual dispatch of Judge Lewis
a great deal of business was transacted
in that time. " " -r . " i
Last but not the least, wo have re
cently had a little mining excitement
in our midst. ' During last month the
discovery of gold was made publio by
Tom. Goodwin and others who had
been out prospecting through the past
summer. The discovery was made on
what Is called Swauk. creek, a small
stream emptying into the Yakima
river on the north side of Kititas
Vailey. They found coarse gold in
nuggets weighing all the way from
$2,50 to $.18,00' which news caused
quite a sensation, and a general
stampede, but It being so late
In the season, most of our settlers
merely wenkaud secured piaims, and
retunred home toattendtothcirdomes
tic affairs and prepare for the mines
in the spring. But old miners are
flocking to the scene now from Mon
tana, Idaho, Oregon, Walla Wralla,
Seattle and other places, and no doubt
will attempt to develop tho mines to
some extent" this fall. I have also
spenf a portion of the past summer
prospecting for quartz, and think I
have been quite suocesstul. Have
found several leads of gold and silver
bearing quartz, so that indications are
favorable for a general mining country
