They say there are not many people camped in that neighborhood at present, and that game is a great deal more numerous than Was ever known before. During their stay Hiey had all the berries they .Could use, and also caught and killed all the fish andyciiisnn they could take care of. They killed ten deer and 'brought nine pair o' bams apiece "home with them, and could liavo got as many more as they -wanted, but didn't have -any way of .getting them home. "See Bomb and Die," was In olden time considered a big thing. - With tho .Albany Register it has been equally a desirable achievement to get off a ffen- Ulne Joke and die! " ' We arrived here on the 1st Inst , after a four hours' railroad spin -from Al bany, and found a camping place, which, like, each succeeding one of SylvanUs 'Cbbb's. upVels, 'ha"s few equals and no superiors." Our tents are pitched oh the margin of a little prairie on the summit of the CaHpoola mountains, where the head waters of the Willamette and "pripqfya, rivers rlpplp a farewell to each other, as they start In opposlta directions for a race to tueir parent ocean. Hu :t!ng and fishing has thus far yielded prolilio dividends. , Yoslerday morni by four o'clock at least a dozen of ourrnost experienced hunters had crept silently and stealthily off for the game, region, each promising sol emnly to return with many trophies of tho chase or to retire from au active Nlmrodical life. ; And, as tha shade of . evening began to throw long shad ows across our camp-field, one by one the mighty hunters staggered wearily In tooamp u iidcr their exha listing loads. Cap. Hum phrey. promises, If Titus don'tgot away with the "dear" by to-hight, to nlaka a raid la that direction himself. " '"Though lost to sight, to memory dear," holds good in our cases, for we are dally furnished by friends with fresh papers, thrown from the cars as they whizz past our camp. Yesterday morning Tern. Cox-, the ever obliging mail agent on the train, threw me three packages, two of which, furnished by himself and the Plalndealcr office, contained nil tho late California and Eastern papers, the other package was evidently intendod for a missionary op a"cheerman"of a Republican mectln', as ft Comprised a catalogue of sleight- of-hand, and legerdemain books, two decks of "seven-up," a magazine enti tled the Missionary Herald and a price list of "Tower's Patent Adjustable Hand-Cuffs and Leg-Irons." Editor Democrat: As tho nwth-bdund train waited at the Albany depot, Dr. Geary and Gen. John F. Jlfiller stood upon the depot platform engaged In earnest conversa tion for some fifteen minutes. The scenechanges. The bell rings and the train moves off gently down the road. The Dr. and tho General each make an apologetio bow to each other, and start In the same direction to overtake the" train.' As the cars are getting pretty Well under way, they, too, with legs now begin to luil.unu finally stop. The locomotive now slackens it speed as if to beckon them on to an easy victory, and they again start with re newed hopes. The highest speed to which they could now attain was about an average between a dog trot and a coon gallop. But nfter going a few steps further, and finding the contest .entirely unequal they stood upon their wind. The Dr., turning to his comrade in defeat, says : "Sir!" but his heaving breast prevented his uttering another word. The General smolo a panting smilo, and they began to retrace their, steps to the depot. The engine, seeing, there was no more fun in that Joke, now solemnly made its way back and took aboard .the two panting dignita ries, - O, how everybody laughed and called It a good Jokel And so it was. Did Mork Twain, or any other funny man, ever see anything more laugh able than those twe digirified gents, whose ages aggregate over one hun dred and twenty years, and whose ag gregate weight Is over 400 lbs avoirdu pois, undertaking to run down a rail road train under full speed. Allow us hereafter to date all funny occurrences from the time wo saw Dr Geary and Gen. Miller undertake to outrun the O. & C. It. B. train. Traveler. t TO FAllMUHS. ' Tangent, Aug. 31, 1873. Editor Democrat: : I see in one of the last number)! of your paper that certain parties offer to give a certain price and the rise -for wheat This is certainly a little better for farmers than to loan their wheat, as some of them did Inst year. But we must recollect that if they cah get our produce for a certain price there will be no rise, as the buyers are prin cipally all in partnership, or, in other words, they belong to the ring. The prospects are very flattering for a good price fcir our wheat this year. The California crop is nearly a failure, and the price in Europe is high. Farmers, keep your eyes open. Tho time is not far distant when the lying, thieving speculators will have to give for our produce what it is worth. Farmer. State Fair, Welastweckreceived ono of the new mammoth State Fal posters. The Fair will commence till year on Monday, October 6, and will oontlnuo six days. The Society this year offer premiums to the. amount of 310,000 in coin, and also several gold and sliver medals. The Annual Ad dross will be delivered on Thursday, October Oth, by Rev. Thos. Condon, of tho Dalles. The price of admission this year will be as follows : Six-day tickets, $2 00; membership badge, $3 00 j one day tickets, $1 00, ladies, and cliildrenjjndor 12 years of age, free, Albany Colleqb. The first term of the collegiate year of the Albany Collegiate Institute opened last Mon day with very fair attendance.. All persons who purpose attending should make arrangements to start before the 20th of this month, as at that date the classejs will be reorganized for tho con venience of those who flud it Impossi ble to begin at the. first of the term This college has a full corps of experi enced teachers, and will now rank among the foremost educational Insti tutions on the North Paoiflc coast. It must not be Inferred, from the fact that A. Wheeler & Co. do not give any guarantees In regard to the price of grain stored, that they do riot Intend to buy. On the contrary they trust that they will be able to make it for the interest of all, who can dullver more conveniently at Shedd, to sell them their grain. But preferences and guarantees are part of oue'system, and one naturally depends upon the other, and both are destined to go out of use. Go and see them before disposing of your grain. .j ; -j Reed's Panorama of the Pacific coast will exhibit at Albany during the Linn County Fair. The writer had tho pleasure of witnessing this panorama at Salem a' short time ago, and can truly say that it js the finest exhibition of tie kind which has ever been in Oregon. The scenes are paint ed by Col. J. H. Reed, of Salem, and consist mostly of Oregon scenes, admlr- rably executed and beautifully portray ed. No one should fail to see this truly excellent exhibition, i Hiyu ilowiTCH. -Messrs. Charley Mealey, Jerry Winters, John Walton and a nk Jtendenhall returned from the mountaius last Tuesday, whore tliey have been for about two weeks on ahuntingexpedition. They encamped in the Cascades at Vine Maple Bottom, and while there succeeded in killing thirty-six deer, the haruo of which they brought with them to this city. They report that the deer, are perfectly thick in that vicinity, and just spoiling to be killed. . For the Dalles. Rev. W; R. Butcher and wife, MisS Sarah Althouse and Miss Aurclia Blain started for the Dalles last Wednesday. Mr. Butcher has accepted the charge of the Congre gational Church at that city, and is now going there to enter at once upon his duties. .iss Althouse and Miss Atirelia Blain are going on a visit to their friends at that place, and the lut-i ter will probably remain there during the coming winter. . ! Thanks. Last week, just as we were going to press, that prince of good fellows, John Natter, Charley Kiefer's brewer, sent us a keg of "Dutch nec tar," nnd consequently our 'husky pressman made tho old Washington fairly "bile" for a few hours. Tho Al bany Brewery has not yet lost its grip as a favorite manufactory of the foam ing lager, and never will while it con tinues to copiously remember the printer. Recruits. Last Tuesday another party, consisting of Sam Althouse and wife, started to join the excursionists at Latham. Jlfr. and Mrs. J. P. Tate, Mrs. J. Borrows, Miss Josie .Hamilton and Miss tlla Barrows started on the sairie trpin on a pleasure excorsion,;in tending to stop at Rnseburg and other points in Southern Oregon. We hope they may all have the best ot success in their rambles in search of pleasure. Ijtvkntion. We were shown dur ing tho week tho model of ah instru ment to be used for the purpose of forc ing a person to bite straight when the dentist is taking au impression of the mouth preparatory to making a set of false teeth. It was invented by Dr. E, O.Smith, of this city, who says that such' an' Instrument has long boen needed by the profes-sion, and he thinks that at last he has got it. Flax Seed. Westlako & Howell, of this city, advertise in to-day's paper that they are now ready to contract for the flax-seed crop of 1874. The prioe which they offer is 3 cents per pound, and furnish sacks and seed. The flax raisers of Linn and adjoining counties can obtain any information in regard to It by addressing the above firm at this city. For Ocnooo. A good many of our citizens went to Salem last Tuesday to attend the grand concert given by Madame Anna Bishop in that city, The Annual Conference of tho M. E. Church, South, couvened at Browns ville last Wednesday.. The attendance is pretty large. At the entertainment on next Friday evening Mrs. Jliart Taylor will sing, In character, that heart-melting song, Little Barefoot." Everybody should go and hear her. Geo. Settlemier Is the agent for this county for the celebrated Home Shuttle Sewing Machine. He has a large quantity of these machines on exhibi tion in his drug store. ) Last Sunday it was given out in the Jlethodist church in this city that there would be no more regular preach ing at that place until after the next Conference, wh?n the vacancy now ex isting in this congregation will be filled by the appointment of some new min ister. - ' " - -- ' The balloon fever is what is the mat ter with our youngsters now. They have sent up one or two paper balloons every day since the ascension of the one connected with the circus. Some of them are fast becoming skilled aero nauts, and may, In time, rival the famous Prof. Wise. 7 , , i Last Wednesday evening a fine car riage team, belonging to the livery stable of .Montgomery & Gore, took a little spin around our streets orr their own responsibility. They started from the livery stable, and after running up and down all the principal streets o( our city, finally came to anchor at the graveyard, all safe and sound. No re pairs will be needed on either carriage or horses. When a man in Albany gets wrathy at another now, he itnmediately in vites the gentleman to choose his sec ond and accompany him over the Wil lamette into Benton county.' When they arrive at their destination they settle their difficulty either by "fight-i log it out on that line," or smoking over it and going to sleep iq the orab apple thicket which lies close to that "dark and bloody ground." Weverily believe, from a little Incident of that nature which occurred during the past week, that the days of chivalry are re turning. Nothing finer has yet been pro; duced in this country in the form of a magazine than the September Aldine. Europe and America have both been laid under contribution to furnish the most marvellously beruitiful pictures which the artists can produce. Mr. A. F, Bunner has a series of threo mag nificent vlewsln the Rooky Jlfountains, made expressly for The Aldine. In these days of Yellowstone expeditions and excua-slons to this famous region, those pictures possess unusual Interest. A full page view of Clear Creek Canon, Rocky Jountains, opens up the won derful grandeur of those hidden soli tudes in a Vay to make them seem real; a large picture of the Snowy Range of the Sierra Jladre is wild, gloomy, and grand, while a sketch of the interior of tho Rocky Mountains, gives one the impression that ail tho world is made of mountains. A charm ing full-page picture after Lejeune, a French artist, called "Tho Blue Bird," shows a bewitching young woman con fined In a strong tower to keep her from her lover. Mrs. Julia C. R. Dorr opens the number with an exquisite poem of considerable length entitled "Rena ; a Legend of .Brussels. ''' It has all the beauty and grace of Tenny son's "Locksley .Hall," which it resem bles. R. K. Weeks adds a gem of a poem called "In September." . The prose contributions are all excellent, and aro written by the best literary talent of both Europe and the United States. , The departments of Music, Art, and Literature, are each well filled with good, solid reading matter, fully maintaining tho reputation The Ai dine has long since earned. Subscrip tion prioe $5.00, including Chromos "Village Eolle" and "Crossing the Moor." James Sutton & Co., publish ers, 58 Maiden Lane, N. Y. .Medical. Dr. Z. S. Cozad, late graduate of the Iowa Statu University, has opened an office In the Bt. Charles Hotel and entered upon tho practice of his profession. The Doctor is a very agreeable gentleman, and coines am ong us highly recommended. We bespeak for him a liberal share of patronage. Lost. Martin Payne lost a pocket book during tho week between this City and Kees1 mill. The book con tained a few .notes and somo wheat checks. Any person finding It will confer a fuvor by leaving it at -Sir, Payne's residence or at this office. Ekkata. Hiram Smith requests us te correct our last woeVs statement that he had resigned tho Harrisburg prwtoffiee. We cheerfully do so, and only wonder at our stupidity in sus pecting that a Radical official wtfuld ever resign anything. Attention, Farmehh.
