An old line Republican of Douglas counlyj writes the following fetter to the Orktoniaa, and we, hero reproduce it to show tho cause of the apathy and disgust ambngvp large. a class of Republicans throughout the Stater I " Oakland, Aug. 24th, 1873. To the Editor of Ike Orenoniany As was expected, the Hepublican precinct meeting here on Saturday was captured by the railroad lntlucnce. The attendance was very small, not over one-third of tho Republicans be ing present. Those ' who remained absent mainly comprise those who have become discouraged in partisan wrangling, and who expross them selves aisgustea at the status ot aftairs in the Republican ranks. They will respond no longer to tho call of the party bugle. J, is a notorious fact that a majority of the Republicans in this precinct cannot be prevailed on to attend any political primary meet ings. The farmers who compose our strength, and who wore formerly the first on hand and the most enthusias tic, are- now eiose r,ho mainly wit!: draw their influence from us. They express themselves deceived, disgust ed and humiliated at the Btatus of public affairs. This leaves the prima ries principally in the hands and sub ject to the manipulation of railroad agents, section nanus and-other em ployes ot the railway, who , are promptly on hand to model the primaries- in the interest of Ben. Holla day. Not a man of this olass was missing, while on the contrary over forty votes, representing the people tne opposition to tne railway nog wpere at uome m their nolds, resolved to let the party go to the dogs rather than dome to the roscue aud assist in denouncing party wrongs. With such widespread demoralization in our ranks, it is vain to hope , tor party triumph. John II. Mitchell recent ly Hippie elected as a Republican, has brought odium on the party; his influence in the Senate and before the country haB withered away, and he is now an actual detriment instead of a benefit. Republicans have appealed to him to resign that tho party .might he saved further responsibility for his presence in the Senate. He persist ently refuses to do this, but prefers that tho party should rather go down with his odium than bo benefitted by his resignation. . . . 1 It is idle to say that John Hippie has nothing to do in this campaign. Tho moral influence brought against us as a party on this man's very doubt ful reputation is of itself overwhelm ing. The party leaders (at present) advising him to remain in his seat is a partial indorsement of his career, and this being understood by thousands of good Republicans throughout the State, they are determined to bear none ot the responsibility, and hence aosent themselves from the primaries. Add this to the grasping, diotatorial monopoly of Ben. . Holladay arfd his aommeeriug control in the local poli tics of the State, and a reason is eiven for the apathy manifested among old line Republicans. , Douglas.
