A JuvrnneioNiAN luct)dhation- EdUor Democrat: i.. .; lrliajis a few brief Itemt from jeff ersim Would not be unluteawllng to muny of your readers. Having lutely returued to Oregon, after a sojourn of several years In California, where It never rains to speak of, I awake to the consciousness that 1 ' MY WEBS. which in early youth were extremely promising, have become utterly unfit for service, and I find It impossible to navigate with the same ease at other semi-aquatic bipeds. However I hope soon to become climated. Not having tuch a transcendant power of description as the lubricous Alpha, we, perforce, must fall In the description of scenery hereabouts. Jefferson, nevertheless, Is as beautiful and thriving a little villago as any I have visited In Oregon, and consider ing the extraordinary ; HARD TIMES, : farmers harvesting, etc., our business men are doing a very brisk business. Crops never promised better. . Fruit of all kinds will soon be abundant. Wm. Smith showed me a limb cut from an apple tree a few day ago which beat anything of the kind I ever saw, it being about four feet long and literally covered with the fruit, reminding me forcibly of the grape vines of Southern California ? 1 "Wbero the grapes are moat luiolous, Where laden long branches bentl double with gold." " ''; I notice the apple orchards are gener ally neglected. " - Speaking of bard times, I have been at a loss to account for the dormant state of affairs at present. It teems to me that Oregon is ; RICH IK RESOURCES; 1 that her people have every faolllty for acquiring wealth, merely by using a little industry and foresight. At it Is, all the available cash that Is realized by the farmor for his produce Is given to the merchants, and tent out of the country to procure articles that could be manufactured here. J: Just now we have nothing particu larly interesting in the way of AMUSEMENTS. ' Occasionally some dilapidated hoodlum proposes to have a "Sociable," which Is re rely if ever consummated, on ac count of the ladies being "too particu lar." Sociable, you understand, is the modern name of that insect formerly known as "Bussln' , Bee." And here, Mr, Editor, let me impart confiden tially something worth knowing and for heavens sake, "Tell It not In Gath, whiswer It not In the streets of Aske lon" there are more pretty girls in Jefferson than any town of Its 3l.? In Oregon , ' OUR POST OFFICE . .' difficulties have at last been adjusted; thanks be to the Powers that rule the Universe. And now the facetious Boland says he is in search of an in. telligent "Heathen Chinee," on whom he wishes to bestow the title of Depu ty Post Master, thereby avoiding the danger of that unenviable position. Yours truly. '!'..-' Amos K. Jones. Jefferson, Aug. 12th, 1873. .:' PROS "THE POBKS." Scio, Aug, 11, 1873, Editor Democrat: ' Another decade has past. Time hath rolled her ample rounds and the period has arrived for your readers to hear from the "Gem of the Valley" again. Our streets present a lively appearance this morning. Harvesting Is in full blast. Threshing .Machines are mov ing through the streets; men are hur rying to and fro, bringing all their en ergies to bear to push the work for ward. The heaviest crop of grain that has been raised for years is now being harvested. Business is improving in Scio, aud we predict that this fall busi ness will be good. Notwithstanding the prospects are flattering, there is a gloom hanging over our city, caused by the unexpected announcement that our Attorney at Law Is soon to leave us for the sunny and more genial clime of California, where a wider and more ample field will be open for the em. ployment of his fine talent, Sadness is more plainly depicted on the coun tenance of tbe "justice" than any one else, because of a mutual admiration existing betweeriTiim'and the Attor ney. It is hard to give him up; one so gifted, yet we yield with christian meekness and exclaim In the language of the Poet: "Amen, so mote it . be." Afost prominent among the improve ments going on in our City is the erec tion, by Irvine & Jbrrls, ol a large and commodious Hog College, near their Grist Mill, where the young swine are to be cared for and prepared for further usefulness. The question now agitating the public minds in this community is, "who shall be our next Representative"? As to who the "coming man" will be, w dare not predict, but meanwhile will watch and pray, and keep a sharp look-out for a chance to do service for some one, or do dlrWor some one else.
