Last Monday evening TTill Jackson and Thurston Hackleman bad a lively little accident near this city. Tbty were driving along jat a pretty rapid rat In a carriage, when the bolt which holds the running gears together came out, letting the front wheels slip out from under the carriage, and thus pitching both of thje young gent to the groand. . The boys were bruised up a little, and some of the minor parts of the carriage werk broken, but, all parties and things connected with the s-nasb-np are at preient "doing aj well as could be expected uuder the circum stances." Last Saturday morning, bright and trly, a gay and Hvjly party of young ladies and gentlemen might have been seen wending their way out of the suburbs of this romantic village towards the towerln j heights of Peter eonButte. Well, there was nothing strange In tbat; butJ "in the course of human events," th?y arrived at the bae of the above-mentioned mole hill, and a double buggy, in going around the side of rather a steep hill, sp.it the hub of the bind wheel which was on the lower tide of the road, which caused the vehicle to turn over in a ,ery u nee re raonious ; manner. Then commenced at ezodua from that Ill-feted carriage, which for rapidity of movement has never been equalled. First came a young lady, tbeu a young gentleman, then another lady, one and all lodging in the cover of the carriage, which waa raised tk the time of the Sf;-p- that time the carriage top had received &n it could conven iently bold and the driver was hd'stled on over this 'mass of struggling hu manity and deposited without much ceremony into a rail fence. This rail fence bad been built in such close proximity to the scene of the accident that it stopped the preliminary ar rangements which J were there being made for a large sized funeral in which the occupants of the carriage, were to cfflcJate as corpses--by furn.'shing a gojd brace for the driver, who held on to the strings and thus prevented the horses from joining in the sport. It moments, but it was all over in a few took a good while to pick over tbe assorted cargo, which consisted of pickle-bottles, canned oysters, girls, sandwiches, cakes, and several other sweet commodities which are indis pensable to a party; of modern' "pio uieera." A slide was rigged under the carriage, and two thoroughly disgusted Individuals mf marching over the hill to the soul-in-epiring music brought forth by the re mainder of the party whistling the f arch." The young men, after reaching Let nor.;' "procured a hack through the kindness of that whole- souled gcntleman, "2)r; Ballard,' "then went d&ck ami iook in tueir compan ions in misfortune and started for this city, where they arrived in due time, a dirtier if no a wiser party, than they were on starting out In the morning. The casual tiesof the party were neither numerous or sericus. One young lady received several lainful bruises,, and 4Jie other, failing, underneath, was 1 impressed into eVh small space hat she could baveyeen covered with out difficulty with asyster-can. Also one young gentlemahas a bole In his ehin which exactly Aa the end of a rail which was foundflying through the air near the scene V the disaster. Thus endeth the first clfcter. Last week we were shown a new kind of wbeat ralecd by Mr. Jos. .Hamilton, of this county, the seed of which was obtained by him from th Patent Office at Washington. It Is a winter wheat and' is known as "Arnold's Hybld No. and describ ed aa "a new and hardy variety, im ported from Canada." When It was planted Mr. Hamilton saved some of the seed, and flow, in comparing it with what he has produced. It shows that Oregon can raise wheat aa large again as they can In the States and use the same kind of seed. Mr. Jiam liton in tend j having on exhibition at the State Fair a specimen of the seed that he received from the States, and also of th wbeat raised by him from this seed.
