FRIDAY. OUU LETT EH - TJOX. Ot'R SCIO LETTIiK. Scto, Mjiy 3, 1373. HJitor Democrat : Some time having elapsed since your readers have heard anything from the metropolis, we hasten to give you a lew items. This day has boon one qf Interest to the ci.isens of this town and vicinity, especially to the juveniles, on account of a May Festival at this place. At the hour of 9 o'clock a. m. a large con course of citizens assembled at the church, when the exercises were open ed with music by a class, who, under the skillful training' of their leader, Mr. T. P. Goodman, have become quite proficient in vocal music. Mrs. llewett and Mrs. .Vecks, who are both talented musicians, performed on the organ, and their efforts lent' ft 60ul-stlrrlng melody to the music One piece in particular, entitled " lloman's Rights " was very amusing ; it was rendered In a beautiful manner by Misses JhgKie Baldwin, Mary II Turner, .Vary Ethel and Addic Kirkpatrick, and Jessrs. B. F.Irvine, V. D. Baldwin and Thos. Baldwin. Thera were several other vocal and instrumental pieces, besides quite a number of recitations, and all were well performed. The exercises finally closed $hh an address to the chil.lren, delivered by the teacher, II. II. 7ewett; his remarks were well timed and instructive. , The crowd then formed in procession and inarched lu regular order to the picnic grounds one-half mile west of town on the romantic banks of the Thomas Creek. Arriving on the ground, a large table was In waiting which was loaded with good things, among which we notice I ,sorae nicely-roasted chicken to this we gave our especial attention. Oh! that we were a preacher that the fcis ters might entertain us in The Forks, anl feast us on yellow-legged chickens. When all (amounting to one hundred and fifty and five souls) had partaken of a bountiful repast, there were taken up of the fragments twelve baskets full. After this the amusements be gan, consisting of swinging, grace hoops, tc. ; but amusements were not confined to these alone we noticed one couple, under a large maple that ! .MA 0. 183. reared its head in majestic grandeur i ons to Oregon, which may lie set down toward heaven, iudulgiug in tlut time- as a shame to our State. I' hh timler, houoredand pleaslngpastiuieof "spark- lumlier, Iron, and everything requisite ing." Your correspondent, when lie ' to manufacture her own wagons, as well was young, indulged a great deal in, j as all other kinds of farm and mechan and was very fond of, this kind ofjicat implements, it is worse than a amusement sparklnjc. O, how that J shame that we must drain our cofTers word thrills our whole frame and . to patronize foreign markets, anil thus causes our blood to rush like molten j scud away yearly hundreds of thou lava through our veins ! it forms a nu- i sands of dollars that ought to be in cleus around whieh a thousand hallow ed memories cluster and fond recollec tion center. (Pardon this digression.) The youngsters enjoyed themselves in various ways until a late hour in the afternoon, when tht-y dispersed and severally repaired to their peaceful habitations, feeling well pleased with the waj' they had spent the day. Al together it was a very pleasant affiirj and we hope it may le the happy lot of your correspondent to witness many sacli scenes. More iu the near future. Br-CCHER. ONE O? THE CAUSES. Albany, April 2S, 1S73. Edlfor Deniocmf: I read in jour issue of the 25th in't"''Ji answers to questions asked by a pen tleman in the East in rejrard to Ore gon. Allow me to say that I think you have answered correctly as far t s you have gone in thc matter. Your .questioner wishes to knew if Oregon M filling up fast. You answer that the "country is not settling rapidly, owing to the fact that only very meagre in ducements have been oltered to immi gration," etc. Now right here is where I wish to say a word. While your an swer is correct, in my judgment there i3 another, and far more powerful rea son, why tiiis beautiful and healthful country is not settling rr.pidly. Our circulating medium gold and silver in contradistinction with currency is the pith of the whole matter. Let us illustrate : Suppose a gentleman liv ing in Illinois, .worth, say $40,00?), wishes to emigrate to tnis State. He comes out here to look, at the country j for himself and is pleased with every thing and says "I believe I will settle here." But then comes up the ques tion of money. Everything is gold and silver here, and Ids money is cur rency. - Now any one will readily ad mit that for any given sum a man ean purchase more cf the comforts of life in theEastern States with currency than he can here with a liko'sum in coin. The man is willing to make that sacrifice if it will stop there but It will not. Jle has S40.000 which he wishes to invest here, but he iust al so suffer a discount on that money of from ten to fifteen per cent. If he is luckey enough to get 8S cjents for Ids greenbacks what is his loss on 40,000? He must suffer a discount of $4,800 be fore he is ready to go to work. ' "i. uuiivi i7 una is iiic iruc reason Miy capital and population do not seek this most desirable of all States of the Union..- We are not now discussing the relative merits of coin or currency as a circulating medium, but currency is a fixed fact in our country, as the great mass of' capital is represented by it. Why should Ore gon put herself in such a position as to debar herself from the benefits to be derived from the expenditure of large sums of money whieh would certainly be used for manufacturing purposes. If Oregon wishes- capital and popula tion, let her people look to their la :n. ..; :, Ad. Rem. ,'. Look Here, Now. The new postal law requires that after the 1st of July next, all postage on newspapers must be paid at the printing otfice before they can be sent off in the mails. vIFe therefore respectfully request our sub scribers ito pay up so that we may have at least enough money to buy postage stamps for their papers. : It is hardly fair to expect us to buy the white pa per, hire it printed and pay , the pos tage on it and then have to wait for our pay from the reader. The May Day Picnic, to be held at' . Hack email's Grove next Tuesday; by , the Ftreme and the public generally, promises to be the rt reft event of the kind ever participated in by our citi zens. Tne Salem and Cbrvalli fire departments, the students of Albany Collegiate Institute, the children of the public schools of this city, and cit izens from almost every portion of Linn and adjacent counties will bo lu at tendance. An address; by M. V, Crown, music by Albany Brass Band, singing by the Qlee Club, match games of baso ball and, croquet and other rural sports and vernal pastimes will fill to tli brim the measure of the day's amuse ments, ami the festivities will close with a grand ball nt Partita Opera House, under the auspices and for the benefit of Albany Engine Co. Ko. 1. The public, especially of Albany, who delight In bowing at tho shrine of Terpsichore, should not neglect this opportunity of gratifylug themselves and contributing to tho maintenance and support of our very superior lire company. All persons or respeciauu ity are Invited to the ball, tickets, In eiuding supper, having been placed at the low price of S3.50. The East Port laud Quadrille Band has been engaged to furnhh music for th 3 occasion, aud no effort will be spared to mako it em inently recherche in all respects. Important to Farmers. On last Saturday Mr. Addo Borehers, of Tan gent, had on exhibition in this city a newly-inventt-dclod grinder which at tracted a constant crowd about it lur ing the day. It is made wholly of Iron the ribs, or runners um which the machine travels, being cast, and the ro li which form the screen through which the clod are ground are of wrought Iron or kteel. The specimen on exhibition U-iJ feet long by 3 feet wide, and, drawn by a liht spin of horses, is capable of working up thirty acres of the most stublorii clod. per day. By this process the clods are not prvssed down Into the earth, as with many oilier machines, but are stirred up and completely pulverized in pass Ing through the intricate wires of the "grinder." The machine lias b-en fully tested by Messrs. Martin Lupcr, Philip Ijnvr, and several other scientific farmers of Linn, and all speak in the highest praise of its utility. Mr. Bor ehers has filed his caveat and applied for a patent uj.-on the machine. -Not Flattering To Oregon. The briir Orient brought some 200 wag- circulation at home. Hurry rip the Sautiam Ditch, and let our Albany capitalists erect litre a manufactory for wairons aud agricultural machinery that will be the pride of the State and J of Incalculable benefit to our nto-de. "Home Again." Dr. Rice and ftim - ily have returned frim the Lapwai ! Reservation, and v.-i 1 in future reside in this city, where the Doctor wiU re sume the practice of his profession. H'e much regr-t to learn thai Mrs. ! Bice's health is still feeble, as her fru-tids fondly hotted that she would Iiave become fully restored by Ur year's sojourn among the invigorating kreezes of Xorthern T Julio. Match Gajie, Maybe. The Al bany Base Bait CluW has challenged the "Athletics," of tfcrvadis, to play a match game at the Firemen's Picuic, near this city, next Tuesday. It is also probable that a nut eh game of croquet will be played at the same time aiul place. Other nvitchcg will probably be made upon that occasion, unless our fflrls and 103-8 act different from all others on similar occasions. Fixixo Up.
