a me mzumxnt FRIDAY-...-.. APRH, 11, 1873. Important Farm ijfo Implement. Mr. Daniel Best is stopping at the St. Charles Hotel In this city with the model of a Portable Grain Separator, which is now being manufactured at Marysvllle, California. This is un questionably the finest machine for the : purpose we ever saw. It has acapaclty for cleaning from 40 to 60 tons of wheat per day ; aud will clean 10 tons daily to . each hand engaged. It will thus be readily seen that it is a great labor sav ing machine. It is perfectly adjustable to any quality, kind or condition of grain. It is propelled by a horse-power attachmejitl It is adapted for perform ing job work, being light and com pletely portable in every respect. The machine was patented in 1S71, and last year Mr. Best manufactured and sold thirty-five machines, one of which, used In Alameda county, Oil., for about 90 days last season, cleared 3,370. Mounted on wagon and horse power complete, the machine costs at the Marysville factory SGOO. Mr. Best thinks he will bring one of these ma ' chines to Oregou and run it here dur ing the coming harvest, so that our farmers may fully understanl its claims to their favor. He designs sell ing the right for their manufacture in Oregon, where they can be manufac tured much cheaper than in California, ' as all the timber used in their construc ' tlou is shipped from Oregon. If this machine comes up to the standard claimed for it by the inventor it will undoubtedly supercede any other im plement used for its purposes. Mr. Best is also the inventopfknd patentee ,of an improved apparatus for Coating Seed Wheat with Sulphate of Copper, which is decidedly useful, cheap and simple. Sentence of J. D. Vay. J. D. May, convicted of jierjury at the recent term of the District Court in this city, was brought up for sentence on last Friday. In response to the question of the Court: "What have you to say why the sentence of the law should not be passed upon you ?" he said: "Judge, I have only this to say: If I have erred it has been an error of the head and not one of the heart. I had no inducement offered me to impel me to do a wrong in this case'. I have not been approached by the men against whom my evidence was given before the grand jury. All I ask is that my sentence may be as short as the Court, in its judgment and wisdom, can make it. I ask this, not for my own sake, but in behalf of those who cannot be other than innoeent of any crime in this oa.se, but over whose lives a dark cloud ha--i iK'en eat by my kite. 1 beg mat they mav te s;areu sis tuucti as possible throuirh the lenieucv of thi Court Jud t. The Judge then sentenced Jay to two years iu the Penitentiary, which is the short - est term that can be given for the crime of perjury. A petition is beiug circu lated and numerously signed by the citizens of this county asking the Gov ernor to exercise executive clemency in favor of May, on account of many circumsuiuces connec-ieu wuu me com- j mission of his offence, chief among j which is the fact that he has an inqo- j cent and helpless family. ', Hard to Please A week or two ! ago a man asked us to put his name in j the paper, and because we did to but not just in the manner he expected he threatened to stop his patier. This -Is only one instance of how hard men are to please. In point of fact, an ed itor Mould be a miserable as3 if he -should hope to please everybody. He can't do it. If he omits anything, he is lazy. If he speaks of things as they j are, people are mad. If he glosses over smoothes down the rough points he is bribed. If he calls things by their proper names, he is unfit for the posi tion of an editor. If he does not fur nish his readers with jokes, he is a mullet. If he condemns the wrong he is a good fellow, but lacks discretion. If he lets wrong and injuries go un mentioned be is a coward. If h'e fails to uphold a public man, he does it to gratify spite is a tool of a clique, or belongs to the 4 onts." If he indulges in personalities, he is a blackguard ; if he does not his paper is dull. That Faib'axd Festival given by the young ladies of the Erodelphian Society of Albany College last Friday night was a grand success. The hall was crowded with the elite and fashion of our city, and the fair: and witching ypung ladie3 enticed everybody to buy until their purses were drained to the "bed-rock," and then sent them home expanding under the joyous exhilira tion of their , witching smiles of ap "proval. By he diplomacy of these young ladies they .reaped a handsome harvest of dollars which will go tow ards furnishing their "society rooms in comfortable, and appropriate fashion. We believe the enterprise netted $143. Tha trial of Elias Keeney, for killing Wm, Pelton, which began on Thursday of last week, continued for about thirty six hours, and as the testimony devel oped the interest of the community grew more intense, until, by the "time tho examination of witnesses was closed and the arguments of the coun sel began, the court room and sur mounting gallery were literally packed with a crowd of ladies aud gentlemen, eager to catch every word which fell from tho lips of the eloquent lawyers employed in the case. District Attor ney Humphrey opened the argument for the prosecution, and was followed by Judges Stratum and irilllams, on behalf of the accused, and Mr. Helm closed the argument for the common wealth. Able aud exhaustive address es to the jury were made'by all of these gentlemen, all seeming to realizo that their professional reputation was enlist ed by the magnitude of the cause Jl IS L- Honor, Judge Bonham, delivered uP Jf clear, comprehensive and purely lm-v partial charge to the jury, aud the case was then submitted to them, at about 5 o'clock on Friday evening. After being out until about 11 A. The new style of ladies' hat the "Grand Duchess" is the worst looking mussed j up thing ever we went hookin' peaches. It looks like it had been used one year i as a mouse's bed, then dug up and run through a threshing machine, then passed one course as a foot-ball at a country school, and finally been shoved down a g. stove shook out promiscuously and pulled down onto a woman' head with angry vehemence.
