. - i . .. r iitt gcntacrat. FRIDAY. MARCH. 7. 1873. OUll LETTER-BOX THE McMlXXVILLlS COLLEGE. , McXIixxville, Feb. 27, 1S73. Editor Democrat: I send to your excellent paper an item of news, which, if you should thiuk worthy a place in your columns, you may publish, os I am confident many of your readers are interested ,ln the JbMlnnville College. '. During eighteen months past, Prof. J. D. Robb has been principal of the college, and with assistant teachers has made a praiseworthy success. In point of thoroughness in all branches of education, students of this college are not inferior to those of any other school in the State. The Prof, has led out in adorning the beautiful college square a lovely five acre lot with ornamental shade trees. He com menced the work, and the trustees and other friends of the college have fol lowed the example till double rows of maple trees now greet the eye. He hope soon a greater variety of trees will grace the college grounds. The financial agent has succeeded In obtainiug an amount sufficient to en dow the school, and is now taking Dotes on the subscription previously obtained and soliciting for a larger endowment. The trustees have again employed Prof. Robb, and also Prof. Russ the latter a very fine teacher, well recommended, a man that moves business in earnest and with ability. The former is too well known as an educator to need comment. We have every good reason to be lieve the school will be a .rich blessing to our country. Thus far it has smoothly, quietly and certainly made its mark, and with the aid of two additional teachers (for the third one will be employed soon) we think that those who have showed so large a share of liberality and public spirit in contributing for the school will bv ful ly satisfied that the enterprise is wor thy the sacrifice they have made to advance it, while the hearts of many rejoice that the cause of education has true friends in every part of Oregon. The school will open with a new corps of Professors on the 12th inst, and as it then commences on the endowment plan, every person having scholarships shonld avail themselves of the benefit of their subscription by sending their scholars or obtaining some other schol ars to fill the place. , The steamers are making daily trips tip the Yamhill river now. R. C. Hill. FKOJI EASTEnX OIIEGOX. Heppxer, rmatilla Cn., Feb. 26, 1S73. Editor Democrat i I thought perhaps a few from this part of the country would not be unin teresting to you just at this time. The whole county has a decidedly white appearance, there being about .two or three inches of snow, and conse quently pretty cold,- but give as a few hours of south (Chinook) wind and the" ; country will look like herself again. Stock is in a fine condition, but there is no great surplus of beef cattle. Portianders are up here after their beef, which sells at from 4 to 5 cents. A peddler named Jyer Cohn passed through this part of the country and created quite a sensation. II gave to the children of a respectable farmer some presents and then went before a justice of the peace and had a search warrant made out.. - The goods, of course, were found in the possession of "the family, thev were arrested and tried before O. F. Clark. J. P. The evidence showed that the peddler of fered to take $500 and leave the coun try, but the trick wouidu't work and the family were found not guilty. This Cohn is a worthless vagabond, and the people would 'do well not to patronize him. ire have a side mail now, running from Scott's P. O. on John Day to Heppuer. Willow Cueekeb. W. Tompkins, of Idaho City, for an article on the ''epizootic"1 which our readers will find on our first page to day, -t . : -. New Departure. -Vm. peters and Jos. Speidel have entered Into copart nership for the manufacture of wag ons, carriages, buggies, etc. They will for the present occupy the wagon shop and blacksmith shop next t',to it, on Ferry street, between First and Second, but during the coming year it Is their intention to erect on the corner of Third and Ellsworth streets, opposite Frank Hood's blacksmith shop, a large establishment for their manufac tory. These gentlemen will shortly have on hand and for sale a large num ber of wagons of the very best mate rial and workmanship, and we trust our citizens will give them ,a liberal patronugt. Don't send away for any thing which you can get made at home. ..Hundreds of thousands of dol lars are annually sent out of the coun try for agricultural implements and wagons which might just a9 well be kept here. All that it needs to keep the money here is to encourage thoso who desire to engage in manufactures among us. Don't fail to do this. Patent Recf.iveik Last Saturday Juessrs. Culver & Priest received their patent on the new style of cultivator which they have invented. They have manufactured and have for sale in this city eleven of their cultivators, and will shortly have many more on the road to completion. What we know about experimental farming is very scant, but we arc told by the knowing ones that these cultivators are a vast improvement upon anything of the kind heretofore Invented. They are handy, convenient, simple and cheap, and we trust Jessrs. Culver & Priest may be able to build up a large manu factory here and a vast patronage for their implements. Their manufactory is for the present on Broadalbin street, between First and Second. . Wa hope our farmers will patronize this institu tion instead of buying implements of Eastern manufacture. We want our money kept at home. " ,. Hood's Household .Magazine for .Varch continues "A Plain .Van's Prob lem," which enumerates the difficul ties of household work with the view of ascertaining whether a science of housekeeping is possible. It would seek to make the life of a woman who, does her own work, not easy, but easi er. ".Moral Cosmetics" gives us a few of the best and most 'comprehensive rules of life. A fun-loving fellow of this city last Sabbath sent an aged neighbor lady a copy of Wood bull's free-love paper, witli the infor mation that it was a very valuable and highly prized religious journal and he hoped she would peruse it carefully. The old lady placidly seated herself in her comfortable chair, carefully ad justed her speckr to her visual organs. and prepared for a "good square read" of c iristian literature. The first thing her eyes beheld was the heading of a dissertation on "Free Love A Heaven-Born Relationship of tho Sexes!" The individual w ho sent that pious old lady that free-love paper doesn't puss her house any more, but goes around about four blocks to get home. 77e feels that his life hangs by a brittle thread, and don't want to throw it away by al lowing that old lady to get a "dive" at him. . . . . - ; , New AD.
