Arriving at Newport, after a three day's ride over roughest roads and in severest weath er, Uie pursuing official learned that his coveted prize had taken up bU quarters in a shaiity near by. George felt that the bird was nearly Within his gra.p, and, clutching his "peper box" firmly in one hand and a pair of liand-cufls in the other, he crept cau tiously towards the cabin, softly open ed the door, and stalked majestically in, with the ominous words, "stand and surrender!" poising upon his lips ready to flutter towards the fast cor nered prisoner. What was his sur prise and chagrin, as lie stalked boldly into the cabin door, to see the retrent-ing'coat-tails of his "cornered' pris oner disappearing through the dilapi dated board chimnev at the rear of the j house! ' ' -- . ... . . . - - --' Ocb City Election. We earnestly urge the Democratic voters of Albany to attend the City Convention at the Court House to-night. . ' There are but very few votes difference between the two political parties of the oity, and by a Judicious selection of candidates we can confidently expect to elect nt least a portion of the ticket, if not all. Our Radical enemies are loudly and arrogantly prating about the great Democratic party being dead. Let us show thcui at least wo of Albany are. alive and fully awake to the nscesslty of preserving Its organization and fighting Its battles. While-we ac knowledge the fact that there is no special political slgnltlcidice in our coming municipal election, yet ns our Ra ileal opponents have thrown down the gauntlet by calling a party conven tion, thus ignoring any proposition for a "fusion' or "cltlxeu'a ticket," it is only left for us to make our nomina tions and meet our old enemies in the political arena as of yore. Let every Democratic voter rally to the polls next .Vbnday, and we will at least give the enemy a thunderln' big scare, and more than likely rout them, horse, foot and babboous! First Anniversary. The first an niversary of the organization of the Erodelphlan Society of the Albany College was appropriately celebrated last Wednesday evening by the young ladies composing that society, the members of the Sigma Phi, and a few 1 n vi ted guests. The doors were t h rown open and the rooms of both societies inspected by those who had not had the pleasure of seeing them since they have been refurnished. Both rooms are fitted up in a neat and tasty man ner, and we believe that in appearance they wid compare favorably with those of any similar societies iu the State. The company, after enjoying them selves in different ways for a short time, assembled in the room of the Er odelphian Society where they were re galed for awhile by the eloquent re marks of several gentlemen present. Ujxm the breaking up of the "love feast" all were invited into the chapel to partake of something "more sub stantial." The whole affair pased off in a very pleasing manner, and all who were in attendance felt that it was a feature iu their live long to be re membered only with feelings of pleas ure.
