Edith O'Gokman. The "Escaped 2f un"- delivered two lectures during the week in Parrlsh's Hall, this city, to gaoi houses. Sha has her lec tures well committed and delivers them witha vivacity and force which stamps her ns a public speaker of more than ordinary acquirements. Indeed we have never heard a better trained woman lecturer than Miss O'Gorman. As to the matter of her discourses, it appears to us greatly overdrawn and so highly colored as to be more conspicu ous for its sensational qualities than i for Its candor and fairness. An indi vidual who claims to have a "God- given mission" to parade through the country and deliver lectures to the people (at oO cents a head!) should not ..forget that trutJis, to be poteut, must be fairly presented and divested of the least semblance of demagoguery and sensationalism. Wo do not believe -Vlss O'Gnrnian's l?ctures have this essential ingredient. That Romanism, as well as Protestantism, has individu als, high in authority, who commit gross outrages upon the laws and mor- als which should govern all eccle.sias tic bodies, we have daily proofs, but to ' cheapest and best publication of its kind take those isolated and coiisp:ei:o:ss.ea- ' in the I'nited States. Wo learu from Judge Baldwin, wdio last Saturday visited tile Locks, at Oregon City, that the w'drfi is exnectcd to be so nearlv com-1 plefed fft about three weeks more, that! all will lie safe from any flow of water which may come against it. Another Fire Almcst. On last Tuesday even lug a lamp in the kitchen ! of the St. Charles Hotel was aeciden- i tally broken and the burning oil bid fair to give us a touch of Chicago or Boston in almost no time. The alarm of fire was given, the engine started for the scene of operations, but some thoughtful, individual smothered the fire with a '.vet dish-rag, or something else, and Albany still stands.
