Tho medical Society of the Third Judicial District held its regular quarterly convocation at the CourtjHjusef in this city, on last Monday and Tuesday. Dr. R. C. The committee appointed at the last meet ing of the Society to prepare memori als to'presehl to the Legislature asking for the enactment of a law for the regr illation, of medical practice, reported one bill asking for the protection of the people against imposition and quackery, another for the protection of medical practitioners, ami a third for the promotion of anatomical research. jThese bills were examined by sections, amended and unanimously adopted. The committee was directed to secure the presentation of these bills to the Legislature and , tq use - all honorable wean9'to secure their passage. "The Board of censors reported favorably up on the application of Dr. Mary P. Saw telle for admission to membership. On Monday evening Dr. Hall of Salem delivered a public lecture to a respect able audience upon subjects pertaining to. medical science. Dr. E. R. Fiske, also of Salem, made some interesting remarks in regard to the climatic ie culiarlties of Oregon and kindred-subjects, which were listened to with marked attention. Tuesday forenoon was devoted to reports of cases ana a " free interchange of Weas upon subjects pertaining to the practice of medicine and surgery. The Saxtiam 11'ateb Ditch AS SURED. A large number of our citi zens met at the office of I. Elkius, last Saturday, and organized a corpora tion to be called the Albany aui San tiam Hater Ditch or Canal Co., with the following Board of Directors: Lu ther El kins, Martin Luper, Jas. II. Foster, Jason Wheeler, D. J". Thomp son, J. F.' Backeusto, and C P. Burk liart. L. Elkins was elected President of the Board, D. MausHcUl, Swretary, ! and John Conner, Treasurer. The cap ital stock of the Company is placed at $30,000, all of which is already sub scribed. This makes the long-proposed Sautiam Ditch a fixed fact, and is a just cause" for congratulation among our. citizens. ..Surveyors and viewers of the route went out this week, and vrill shortly report the best and most feasible route for the canal. It is ex pected to commence'on the work im mediately' and bring the ditch a part of the distance this season, and com plete it next. The completion of this ditch will be one of the most import ant epochs in the history of Albany, and will undoubtedly give bur city an Impetus that no other enterprise possi bly could. The. Directors are men of energy, en terprise, . ami' indomitable persever ance, and we may confidently antici pate that they will leave no effort un made to push this important undertak ing an early arid successful comple tion,,, In the t meantime, our citizens should render them all the encouraga ment and assistance in their power. - Acquitted. Mr. Baldwin, proprie tor of the Ocean House, at Yaqulna Bay, called on us last Saturday, on his return home shaving been in attend ance on the ui S. Circuit Court at Port land, ae a witness in the case of the XL S.r against Thos. Boyle, charged with selling liquor to Indians. He in forms us thatMr. Boyle was acquitted. We are glad of this, as Mr. B. had just taken unto himself a fair and youthful bride who would have been desolate indeed if the meshes of the law had closed around him and dragged him to a felon's ccIL - Boyle is the person who killed the Indian -chief, Tootootenia Jack, at Yaquina, last-Fourth of, July, in -eelf-defenee; and thie prosecution was undoubtedly instigated by malice and a desire for revenge on the part of the Indians. : r- AT YAQCivii Bay. By a letter from Mr. A. W. Wright, our agent at Newport, Yaquina Bay, we learn that the package of Democrats which go to that placeliave failed to put in an ap pearance for some weeks . past. Now this is too bad. We 'mail the papers regularly and correctly, and , the fault of their non-appearance at their desti cation must be in the mail or in the various postmasters through ' whose hands they should pass. We regre.t this.yery much but see no way to rem edy the evil until Greeley is elected and those postmasters who have rio re gard for. the people's rights and wishes are "summarily kicked from office. Have DEPAKTED.-The conclave "of Doctors who met ., for consultation in this city on last Monday, with the ex ception of our- resident physicians have all gonelrdmour gaze. Lafollctt, Esq., formerlyiof this county, but now of Ochoco Valley, gave us a call last Fri day, having just arrived from that sec tlon. He reports everybody flourish ing in Ochoco and Crooked River Val leys. At Prineville, (the "capital' of Ochoco Precinct and the .VetropoHs of all that country) there are now two stores, a saloon, a blacksmith shop, r. school house and about a dozen fami lies. A day and Sunday School are regularly kept up, With also an occa sional religious service. A grist mill will soon be in operation ou the Ocho co, which will be a great convenience to the people of that country. Cereals of all kinds yielded finely this year, as also grass in abundance. The "cattle on a thousand hills" were fairly "wad dling" in fatness, and still tlie grass seems inexhaustible. WiLLBs .it tub Lrarsr.ATcnE. A gen tleman in every way competent will be left in charge of the editorial man agement of the Democuat during our absence.
