lie Mtmtmt FRIDAY... .AUGUST, 23 1872. 8CISSORIXGS. The storm signal man on top of Hount Washington, holds the "high est office in the gift of the nation." A gentleman ordered his servant to call him at six; but he woke him at four, telling him he had two hours longer to sleep. "I will preach from dat portion of the Scripture, dis evening," said a colored dominie, "where de 'Postle Paul pints his 'Pis tie at the Phe eians. " The Virginia Legislature has passed a bill repudiating one third of the old State debt, that being the amount which was apportioned to West Virginia. , It is stated that upward of three thousand women are now employed in the departments at Washington as clerks, printers, librarians, copy ists, and the like. Miss Amanda Way, has been li censed to preach by the Methodist Church in Winchester, Indiana, and delivered her first sermon in that city a few Sabbaths ago. There are twenty family physi cians in Berlin who are justly entitled to be called famous practitioners. They have amassed individually ample pecuniary means, it is said. A blind woman in Iowa has learned to thread a cambric needle with her teeth and tongue, and a contempara Ty asks: "Is their anything in the world that a woman's tongue cannot do or undo?" All the liquor shops of Washington are closed on Sunday. The only place where you can get a drink on that day is at the White Ilouse, and then it is to your advantage to be a brother-in-law or cousin. "Mrs. Muffin," said a visitor. "Emma has your features, but I think she has got her father s hair. "Oh, now I see," said the "deer little JEmma," "It's because I have father's hair that he has to wear a wig." $ One of Baltimore '8 loveliest belles Lad a runaway match, to the intense delight of the gossipers. A sympa thizing chronicler says that the bride "'left a disconsolate little - poodle to mourn the pangs of unrequited love Douglas Jerrold said: "Eve eat the apple that she might indulge in dress." Little did she realize the cost of fig leaves in the nineteenth centurv, or how much it would worry her poor daughter to get even a ballet iress. An archaeological correspondent adduces as evidence of the antiquity of the game of euchre the passage in the New Testament which relates Low the priest and the Levite "passed" and the good Samaritan "assisted." Two Quaker girls were ironing on the same table. One asked the other what side she would take, the right or left? She answered promptly: "It will be right for me to take the left; and then it will be left for thee to take the right." The first woman admitted to prac tice as a lawyer in tho Courts of the District of Columbia, is a young, colored woman, Charlotte E. Ray, a graduate of Howard Institute. She was admitted to the Bar last Friday, tinder the new rules ofthe Court. A eolored mail-carrier in Virginia was recently well shaken by a man for kicking his dog. "Look a here, massa," said he, "you'd better be ieerful how you shakes dis chile; cos when you shakes me you shakes de whole of de United States; I carries de mails." A man who went to the Hartford menagerie, the other day, remarked to a person standing near: "How I would love to see one of those noble animals," meaning the tigers, "roam ing the forest! How quick I would get up in a tree!" The man means just what he said. A curious confirmation of the truth of Thackeray's assertion that a lady could not write a letter without underscoring some of the words was shown in Queen Victoria's recent let ter to the people, acknowledging her gratification at the enthusiastic recep tion with which she was greeted. In it three words are underscored. Testing Silver Platixg. It is sometimes a matter of interest to be able to determine, by means of a sim ple test, the nature of a silver coat ing to a metal, whether it be pure silver or some other substance. This is said to be readily accomplished by the use of a cold saturated solution of bichromate of potash in pure nitric acid of one and two-tenths specific gravity. The surface of the article to be tested is to be first washed with strong alcohol, so as to remove any lacquering, and then a drop of the solution applied by means of a glas3 rod, the place affected being immediatly rinsed off with water. . If the substance in questisn be silver, a distinct blood-red spot of chro mate of silver will be perceived. The stop is brown on German silver, and after rinsing shows no trace of red. With Britannia (composed of tin and a little copper), a black spot will be discovered, but no effect will be seen with platinum. Upon a surface amalgamated with mercury a reddish-brown deposit will be perceived, which is completely washed away on rinsing. With lead, and Tsismuth a yellow deposit remains. Zinc be comes strongly etched, the liquid, however, disappearing completely on washing. Tin is attacked also very decidedly, but the test liquid imparts a brownish color, and an addition of water produces a yellow deposit which readily attaches it self to the metal. - Some Michigan boys, feeling the need of wholesome recreation, stuffed a suit of clothes with straw and buried it. killed a couple of chickens and strewed the blood around the grave, and trampled the ground so that it gave evidence of a fearful struggle. The horrified citizens soon discovered the grave, summoned the Coroner, had a jury impaneled, dug up the body, and adjourned in a hurry. ""; A patriotic French lady, interested in the national subscription, extorted 10,000 francs from ber lover by threat ening to send certain autographs to tu LiiC gsuueuiiui g wile. , AMVBtNO SCENE. The Washington Star says: The passengers on one of the Biker street cars laughed some yesterday morn ing at a scene between the conductor and a well-dressed young man. from Georgetown. As the car was pass ing down the avenue, the young man at the time standing on the platform taking it easy with one foot on a trunk, he was approached by the conductor and his fare demanded. He quietly passed over his tewenty five cents. - - J Conductor I demand twenty-five cents for that trunk. Young Man (hesitatingly) Twenty five cents? Well, I think I will not pay it. Conductor Then I shall put the trunk off. Young man You had better not, or you may be sorry for it. Conductor pulls strap, stops car dumps trunk on the avenue, starts car, and after going some two squares approaches the young man, who was still as calm as a Summer morn ing, and in an angry mood says: "Now, I have but your trunk off, what are you going to do about it?" Young man (coolly) Well, I don't propose to do anything about it; it's no concern of mine; it wasn't my trunk. Conductor (fiercely) Then, why didnt you tell mo so? Young man Because you didn't ask me, and I told you you'd be sorry for it. Conductor (furious) Then go in side the car. Young Man Oh, no! you're good enough company for me out here. At this juncture a portly German emerges from the car, and angrily says: "Mine Gott! you feller, where is mine drunk?' ' Young Man My friend, I tkink that is your trunk down on the ave nue there. German Who put .him off? I have the momsh to pay him. I see about dot. The car was stopped, and shortly after the conductor was seen to come sweating up, with the trunk on his back a part of the performance he did not enjoy half as well as did the passengers. Johnny says he has ceased to dis pute the point that an ounce of pre vention is better than a pound of cure; but can t see why he should be made to swallow the whole ounce at one gulP- A gentleman recently declared his love in writing to a lady whose affec tions bad entered on another gentle man whose name was Aiken. She replied to her adorer that she "bad an Aiken void in her heart which he could never fill." ADVERTISEMENTS. CITATION.
