The meeting of the "Harrisburg
Democratic Club," on Saturday night
last, was largely attended, considering
the inclemency of the weather, having
rained all day, and about six o'clock
set in snowing, nevertheless the Acad
my was well filled with those who
were desirous of hearing Mr. Helm,
who had been invited to address the
club on that occasion.
After the usual transaction of busi
ness by the club, Mr. Helm was intro
duced, and in his usual forcible style of
delivery, his plain, concise and logical
manner of argument, his earnest, hon
est mode of expression, entertained the
audience for one hour and a half, now
and then being interrupted by hearty
rounds of applause from the audience.
He showed up the corruption of the
party in power with so much clearness
that Ma wayfaring man, though a fool,"
could not fail to see the foulness of
Orant's plan of civil service, and ex
ported Democrats to be vigilant and
active (not "passive") in their efforts
t hurl Radicals from power, and thus
furnish an opportunity of purifying
the administration of public aflairs
and of restoring that confidence which
the American people formerly had in
their ability to honestly and economi
cally govern themselves.
The dangerous tendency of monopo
lies was held up so plainly that every
Democrat and Republican present was
ready to say "on to the front" in the
war between the honest, laboring class
and monopolies. He showed the dan
gerous precedent, set by the Radicals,
of granting millions upon millions of
acres of the public domain to those
heartless monopolies who are constant
ly drawing the life-blood from the toil
ing millions, who are now no more nor
Jess than slaves to a horde of petty
railroad kings and aristocrats. The
-attention of the audience was called to
another act df folly on the part of the
administration that of giving a liber
el construction to the charters under
which the subsidized monopolies of the
country amassed immense fortunes in
a few. years, often, too, without invest
ing a dollar of their private means, as
though they were a class of citizens
who needed and deserved the fostering
eare of -the government. He was in
favorof raiiroads and all other enter
prises calcalated to develop the hidden
resources of the country, and would
not object to the government extend
ing a limited ail to those who engage
in such enterprises, but while the far
mer and the miner, the pioneers of the
country, go out unaided and unprotect
ed to develop the material resources of
the country, the speculator and money
adventurer should be made to rely up
on his own resources for his success.
This position 'Republicans cannot gain
say. These arguments Republicans
will not attempt to refute.
The assumption -of power, (on the
part of the federal government) which
was never delegated to teem, was then
dilated on by the speaker, who showed
one of its natural results which will
exemplify itself at our next election.
Our State provides that all votes shall
be given viva voce, but a late law of
Congress provides .that -all Congress
men shall be elected by hallot, thus
bringing about a direct conflict between
State and Federal law. Now shall we
have two sets of polls for each precinct
in the State, or shall we violate State
or federal law, and if so which shall we
violate ? But space forbids me follow
ing the speaker any further. The
speech was well-timed and had a good
effect among Republicans, of whom
several were present.
The next meeting of the club will be
held Saturday, Feb 17, at 1 o'clock p.
31., when speakers from a distance will

importance of a thorough organization.
On motion the meeting proceeded to

had it up here it's all over now! But

Mrs. D' political tirade here reminds
me of a woodpecker pounding on a
hard limb, and then looking up at you
with the conceited query, "isn't that
loud for a little bird ?" and we answer
yes, old lady, that's a monstrous noise
for a bird of your plumage ! Mrs. D.
seowjs at the idea of color or skin be
ing allowed to partition society, schools
or households. In as far as the ration
al question of woman suffrage received
the random touches of the speaker, I
fear it got a disparagl ng scald.
The speaker's wild fury U politics
denotes either a want of good informa
tion and reflection, or else a fceUle
judgment upon the redeeming attttuJe
of the Democracy. Jer party-bearing
here, If I mistake not, was that of a
self-conceited virago, who had espoused
.the apostate heresy of old John Brown,
who, history shows, was used by the
Abolition uarty as the front-piece In
beginuing our recent war.
The speaker alluded to the silly con
jecture "that Holladay had the pegple
of Oregon bottled up and was preiutr
ing the cork;" but she complacently
flattered us with the revelation that
she possessed the screw for that mam
moth cork, and that she would see, un
der the contingency of our liberal pat
ronage, that we all should have air and
diet. (Hats up with a cheer, boys.)
In candor, we say that Mrs. Duniway
is not without her well earned merit.
She could be successful, and of great
benefit to society, but to do this I think
she must limit herself to the prudent
female sphere. Whenever any woman
dons the ranting masculine dema
gogue, her pleading graces the ele
ments of her power vanish.
I am proud to see female editors, lec
turers, etc. They have competent tal
ents and a right In nature to all the
higher professions. But they, being at
least half human, will, like their
brothers, commit some blunders. I
have already written much in favor of
woman's rights. But this subject must
be temperately examined from philo
sophic premises, or else Its advocates
wilt hinder and confuse rather than
promote beneficial inquiry. In ail
charity I hope that Mrs. D. only made
some mistakes on last evening, which
she may not repeat and the effects of
which she may redeem. Eye.
Hail! Mrs. Duuiway stayed and
lectured us on the evening of the fctli
upon Woman's Rights. Her address, in
its better parts, cast a new ray of glory
on her crescent lame. Lnharipily, 1
thought it was imprudently blotted in
places by enlarged and vivid alfusions
where politer hints would have been
sufficient and yet spared her audience.

SYRACUSE DEMOCRATIC CLUB.
In pursuance of a notice In the Dem
ocrat of Feb. 2nd, the Democrats of
Syracuse Precinct met at Allphln
school house at 1 o'clock for the pur
pose of organizing a Democratic Club,
and also to listen loan address by Hon.
Geo. R. Helm who hail been invited
by previous arrangement.
Notwithstanding a terrible rain pre
vailed all day the Democracy were out
in full force, fully alive to the impor
tance of a thorough organization. At
1 o'clock the house was called to order,
W. P. Farlow in the chair and A. P.
Miller as Secretary, whereupon Mr.
Helm was invited to the stand and
proceeded to address the meeting in a
sound, logical and "hard-shell" style
of Democracy characteristic of the
speaker.
The conclusion of Mr. Helm's speech
was greeted with enthusiastic applause,
and the meeting proceeded to complete
its temporary organization.
Messrs J. T. Crooks, E. M. Miller
and P. V. ibrris were appointed by
the chair as a committee to frame a
Constitution and by-laws and draft
resolutions for a permanent organiza
tion at our next meeting. Messrs. J.
1eeker and Abraham Farlow were ap
pointed committee to procure a speaker.
On motion, a vote of thanks was ex
tended to Mr. Helm for the favor of his
address, and it was also ordered that a
copy of these proceedings be sent to
the State Rights Democ rat for pub
lication. The enrollment of names being nejt
in order, quite a numberof names were
enrolled as members of the Club. On
motion the Club adjourned to-meet
again Saturday, Feb. 24, at 1 o'clock.
