The male juveniles of this city have been recently violently at tacked with the stilt mania, and they nojv have the contagion in its worst form. Th mania is peculiar to hoys between the ages of three and fifteen years, although Instances have recent ly come under our observation where it has attacked boys of maturcr years, and we even last Saturday observed a couple of little angels in petieoats wad ing through the street upon these ex alted "pedetr"a ators." The symptoms of this disease are sprained ankles, torn .breeches, muddy clothes and peel ed noses, and when it becomes chronic an occasional black ey? may be observ ed. The first symptoms are not alarm ing and we have known boys for weeks to suffer on in silence. The first indi cations which will arouse suspicions of parents is the undue time required for lnys to perform errands, bad reports concerning boy from school teacher, and the nij-sterious disappearance of fence palings, lath nails, leather straps and boot tops. But then its none of our funeral and wo don't blame the boys tor trying to get above this muddy earth and mizzling wetness. The M.vsoxtc Level. The prospec tus of a Masonic Magazine, to be pub lished at Portland, is on our table. The periodical isto bear the title of The Ma tonic Level, and is to be devoted to the cause of Freemasonry in Oregon and the Northwest coast, together with choice miscellany, literary selections, stories, anecdotes, useful maxims, sci entific truths, domestic knowledge and family literature. The name of the editor is not given, but we are promis ed that he will ! an experienced jour nalist and a bright Jiison. We believe that a publication of this kind will supply a great want among our Breth ren of this and the jurisdictions north of us, and we trust that this enterprise will he nurtured and encouraged by the Fraternity. An exchange ver3 pertinently remarks that there are a few men in every community wiio never do anything to assist public im provement, and always protest that sueh and such institutions don't profit them a cent, but we take notice that every time a town secures a public im provement of any importance, these ! self-same men put up the prices of their j land five dollars on the acre and S100 ( on a lot. A community composed en tirely of this class of individuals would be about as lively as a graveyard. That Festival. The Mush and Milk Festival of the ladies of the M. II Church, given at Parrish's Hall last Friday night,was a decidedly pleasant afiair, but was hardly so well attended as the cause deserved. Nearly every body devoured "mush-an-milk" and the other delicacies furnished by the smiling ladies, and mirth and jollity ruled the feast and the occasion. The gross receipts were about S75. We ten der the fair managers of the affair our thanks for favors copiously showered upon us. Goixoto his Post. Hon. Jas. H. Slater last Sunday passed through this city on his way to Washington, to keep the few Republicans in Congress straight. lie reports the Democracy of Eastern Oregon united and hopeful, and says they don't go a cent on the "passive policy." So long as such sterl ing and unflinching men as those of Eastern Oregon stand by their colors we may safely say, "There is life in the 01d;Land yet." Litebaby Society. Ruel Custar, Esq., after a residence of many years in Linn !county, will start next week for the East, where he designs spend ing a few months among the "Old Folks at Home." It is a splendid number, with two steel en gravings, oneof wh!ch"Bashful Boots," is alono worth the price of the number, a manynoth colored steel fashion plate, a colored pattern in Berlin work, and more than fifty wood cuts. We do not wonder at the great popularity of "Pe terson," for it really gives more for the money than any other. Every lady ought to subscribe for it. Its stories are the best published anywhere. Here is the way: Select none but the soundest turnips of the early horn variety, split then into the length of fence-palingM In-fore cradling them; in baking the cider use plenty of Ice and hang it up in the sun to dry. Apropos of elections, and politics, and new departures, and woman's rights, and the Mt. Ceni Tunnel, and the Santiam ditch, etc., reminds us that Charley Mcaley still keeps on hand the largest and best assortment of furniture ever brought to Albany, and has the finest corps of mechanics to le found in the State. Pebsoxal. By a letter from our old friend Claiborne Hill, we learn that he has settled at Pilot Rock. Umatilla county, and that lie and his wife are both enjoying unusually gon! health. Like most of our friends who have left old Linn for other scenes, he finds it impossible to get on without the Dem ockat. Alb ax y Electiox. Neither of the political parties have yet selected a time for holding their City Conven tion, although our election occurs next Monday week. Last Tuesday a son of John Fagan, living near this city, accidentally broke hit- leg just below the knee.
