The 84 miles of railroad running
through the county was asswsed at
"5131,000 or $4,000 per mile for 24 miles
of it, and So.oOO per mile for ten miles
of it which is not yet gravelled. The
total amount of taxable property In the
county last year was $3,021,300, show
ing that the property of the county has
increased $541,700 in the past year, or
$410,700 exclusive of the railroad prop
erty. The number of jKiIId assessed
And collected this year is 1,41"'. The
tax levy this year has been placed at
13 mills" on the dollar, being 2 mills
lower than last year, and probably
lower than in any other county in the
ftate. Considering the fact that we
have this year buiit the finest jail in
Hie State, costing nearly $10,000, ami
made other valuable improvements,
this is an astonishingly low tax levy,
ana speaKs volumes in tavor of our
present county administration. For

Juscnox City. This new railroad
town, 7 miles below Eugene, is having
an astonishingly rapid growth, and is
fast looming toward the dimensions of
a city. Mr. Aliphin informs us that

over 40 buildmgs have gone up m the
past three weeks, and that as many
more are in progress. Two month3
ago there was not a house on the town
site, and now there, are 60 or 70, includ
ing a store, two hotels and three sa
loons all doing a flourishing business.
Verily Junction City is the coming
metropolis. '
Postal Route. We are informed
that Col. Hogg, the new proprietor of
the W. V. & C. M. Wagon Road, has
gone to Washington for the purpose of
securing the early opening of a mail
route over his road from this citv to
Ochoco. He hopes to succeed in hav
ing the contract let and the mail line
establ ished by next spring. Thi3 would
he a great benefit to that route and a
great blessing to our trans-Cascade
friends of the Ochoco country. Hogg
speed its early consummation!
-y Peesoxal. Last week Messrs. Da
vis, of Ohio, end 3forrill, of New
Hampshire, accompanied by their
wives, : . arrived at Earrisburg.
The former is a brother and the latter
a brother-in-law of Dr. Davis, of that
place. They come to Oregon for the
purpose of looking at the country and
spending the winter with their brother,
from whom they have been separated
for twenty years.- May their sojourn
iu our midst he a pleasant one.

The Portland papers complain that
the good old parlor game of whist is
giving place to a new-fangled card
game called the "grab-game." They
will next get to playing "Skin-Injun"
in their parlors down there.
Sheriff Irvine ran our recent Circuit
Court for two weeks without a bailiff,
when the law allows him five. He thus
paved our county a neat little sum, and
transacted the business fully as well as
though a half down persons had been
engage! for the occasion.
It is rumored that capitalists will
erect a magnificent Summer House at
Finlay's Lower Soda Springs (in the
Cascade Mountains) next j'ear, com
prising a hotel, billiard-room, bar, and
all the "other conveniences of a first
class pleasure resort. If this Is true
that will be the most healthful sum
mer retreat in Oregon.
A cotemporary says he recently saw
a large number of young ladles enter a
public hall with dishevelled hair and
hat brims apparently wrinkled and
broken, and, as he fancied, with ex
cited countenances. "Upon inquiring
what tho riot was about," says he,
"imagine our chagrin when we. were
told it was the fashion."
TFe saw a lady on our streets the oth
er day with that flip-flop, wiggle-wag
gle, knock-kneed, loose-jointed, pigeon
toed Grecian bend walk. It is the first
attack we have noticed In Albany, and
seemed to be in the most virulent and
malignant form. It is to be hoped that
all our lady readers will get vaccinated
as soon as possible, eo that they may
not take the hideous disease.
A school teacher near Portland
punishes refractory pupils by making
them stand on tip-toe on a bench
and tying a piece of string around
their necks, jvnich. is fastened to a
nail in the ceiling. That teacher
ought to dangle from a rope's end
once himself.
Burglar va. Detective.
En. Democrat: On last Sunduy,
while 3r. J!ec;kcr and family who live
near Jefferson were absent fromhotne,
two burglarious Individual who were
traveling along tho highway entered
tho house and took therefrom a pair of
boots belonging to one of tho young
gentlemen and a silk dress anil other
wearing apparel belonging to the young
lady of the house. They then started
on, but one of them, supposing himself
discovered, was seen to run and hide,
while the other one walked away with
the stolen goods. They had crossed the
Santlam tit Jellerson that morning and
were both charged to tho nni.ze with
tarantula Juice, and one of them was
minus un optic.
After It was discovered that tho arti
cles were stolen, special detectives V .
and M . started tno next morning In
pursuit of the bargain, whom they as
certained had gone southward; and each
of the pursuers being mounted on a
swift steed they anticipated a sjx'edy
capture. They were traced through tho
mi melons dens ami deadfalls of A litany,
but the birds had taken wing, and when
last heard from were about four miles
above Albany; but the Detective F
in his precipitate pursuit having for
gotten his saddle, and here the thread
of their Investigations being broken,
together with the lateness of the hour,
compelled the detectives to abandon

supposed was no less than one of the ob

city of Mexico last month against the
Jaarez Government. There was
bloody fighting for some time, but at
