It has ft population of l.COO. The houses are mosttv frame, but neat and large, ami ttcautiftcd by shade-trees and flowers. The streets are macadamized and the walks are of plank. Tho citizens are intelligent, Industrious and progress ive. JThc Albany City flouring nil II, owned by Messrs. Beach A Mouteith, Is the most complete In tho State. It has a capacity for turning out. 85,000 barrels of flour per year, contains eight bins tweuty feet square and thirty-nine feet high, holding 10,000 bushels wheat, each. Five hundred barrels of flour can be loaded on a steamlMiat or cars In three-quarters of an hour. The mill Is run by water power. In fact very little steam Is needed in Oregon, as the water privileges are abundant. A view from the belfrey of the Acad emy Is truly grand and jiicturcsqne. Far away on all -sides waving grain fields meet the eye, with here and there a beautiful grove breaking the monotony of the scene, while through all like a thread of silver winds the broad and clear Willamette and yon der to the north are mountains robed In the garb of Summer green, ami far above are trie snowcapped twin sisters, Hood and Jefferson. Albany Cemeteby. After the ex penditure of ten dollars in advertising, and after an energetic exertion of two years and over, a sufficient number of members of the Albany Cemetery As sociation to form a quorum were gath ered together at the Court House on the 18th Inst., ami tho following pro ceedings were had: , IIou. X. II. Cranor was elected Presi dent of tho Association, John Smith was elected Treasurer, and J. C. Pow ell, E. A- Freeland and S. E. Young, Trustees; after which J. C. Powell was elected President of tho Board of Trus tees. The Board of Trustees wero Instruct ed by the Association to procure, if possible, au addition to the Cemetery' Grounds. This duty it is hoped they will not neglect. By the Treasurer's report there Is $326 iu the Treasury. If there had been a proposition to apjortiou this among the members would there have been as much trouble to secure a quo rum of 12 out of a membership of 50 who live in Albany ? There are quite a number of persons owing for cemetery lots who can have their deeds by paying to the Treasurer the amounts due. It is honed that a greater interest will hereafter be manifested in regard to this matter, and that our silent "city of the deaI" will not hereafter be so entirely neglected as it has been In the past. Millard, has placed upon our table several mam moth clusters of the Red Resling grape, which. tor flavor and beauty beat any thing we have yet seen in this country. Mr, J. I. Nye, of Sweet Home Pre cinct, this county, has presented us with some specimens of vegetables raised by irrigation this year which are the finest we hare yet seen. It Is not generally known that Irrigation will materially aid In the production of veg etables in this Valley;, but the experi ment of Mr. Nye satisfies him that during a dry season like the past sum mer irrigation is just the thing needed to successfully mature all kinds of gar den products. . Cobbectiox. We rise to exclaim that we made a mistake, last week, in stating that Mr. Collins had his shoul der dislocated in front of Conner's new bank building. Hie accident occurred on the opposite side of the street from the bank, and was eaused by some 'ob struction on the sidewalk in front of Thompson . & Irving' new brick building. It doesn't make much dif ference, except that if the accident had occurred on the other side of the street from where it did occur it would have then been necessary for us to have stated that the other side of the street was the opposite side from the side up on which it happened and therefore that we had committed another grave error In stating that it occurred upon the other side from the side of the street upon which the accident really did oc cur, or vice versa, or words to that effect. . It seems that tho trouble originated in an old grudge between two men named King and l'owley, formerly partners in tho mercantile business l'owley asserted tli.it King swindled him out ol nil his property, aud swore that King should not clerk iu the store, which had passed into the hands of onoilr. Hays, who had hired King as clerk, l'owley went into tho store and ordered King to leave, whereupon Mr. Marks, tho chief clerk, told l'owley to go out. l'owley said "No, by Od, , ho would dio first!" and the firing immediately 00m tnenced. It is supposed that Marks fired first. The names of the wounded are as fol lows: l'owley, shot twice through tho shoulder and through thu hips ; Disable, shot three times ouco in tho left breast above the nipple,, oneo in the brenbt and ouco in tlie bowels ; Dry, shot in tho head, only fracturing tho skull; and a man from this Valley named Powers,' slightly, wounded in the arm. Tho last two were shot ac cidentally, not being interested in the affray. Tho store was full of people, and "20 - shots were fired; and it is strange that no more damage was in flicted.
