St. John, the Evangelist, He was

Rome, was martyred by being ast

St. Andrew is the patron saint' of
Scotland. Hut little is known, of
him, although he is believed to Lave
suffered, martyrdom, at Patra, ' in
Greece, in the year 70, on a cross iu the
shape of a letter X.
St. Lake the ; Evancelist, was the
""beloved physician" of St. Paiil.He
preached the Gospel in Egypt and
Greece, and ' lived to the age of 84,
when he was banged on an olive tree-
St, Deny s, the patron 6aint of
Prance, was Bishop of Paris, and suf
fered martyrdom in that city In the
year 27 He is usually represented
with his head in his hand, because,
when beheaded he carried it thus for
two miles. ,
traveled, to France, and earned his
support by niaking and selling shoes.

St. Jude was one of the apostles,
but little is known of him. He is usu
ally - represented with a carpenter's
square. -

tory is obscure. lie is represented
with a handsaw, and was probably a

gatnerer, ana was consequently un
popular with his people.- He preach
ed the Gospel in Judea, Parthia. and
Ethiopia. - He was the author of the
Gospel which bears his name.
Si. Bartholemew preached the Gos
pel in Armenia and India, and suffered
martyrdom in the former country by
being flayed alive.
St. John the Baptist was the pre
cursor of the Savior. He reproved the
-daughter of Ilerodias," and was be
lieaded by order of the iiornan Gov--ernor.
St. Giles is . the patron of the crip
ples, and was born in Athens. lie
visited France, where Le lived a her
mit's life. A monastery was bult
upon the site of his hut He became
its Abbot, and died in 72o.
St. Cyprian was a native anil Bish
op of; Carthage. He was beheaded
inthe year 25, in the persecution un-J
tier the imperor Uecius. . .
"St. Jtrome was one of the most1
learned of the ancient fathers. He
translated the books ef the Bible iuto
Latin, and died at an advanced age in
the year 120. . .
St. James, called the Great, wa3 a" !
fisherman, and brother of St. John.

he preached the Gospel. He was be-
beaded by order of Herod the Great,

y St. Peter was a brother of St. "An
drew, and a fisherman. He was cru
cified with his ead downward, be-"
cause he felt . that he was not worthy
to die like his Master, who was cruci-j
fied in an upright position.
St. Boniface. " the apostle of Ger
many, was Archbishop of ilayence in
745. In 755 he sufiered martvrdom
with fifty-two of his followe'rs, at
Utrecht.
St. Augustine was the Apostle to
JJaitainj being ent .there by; op$
of Gregory. He was very successful,
and was raised to the See of Canter
bury in the year 497.. He died seven
j-ears later. . . ,.
St. Mark was one of the four'EVan
.gelists. He founded a church at
Alexandria, and, denouncing the fclol
trous worship of tSerapis, hefSvas
seized and bound, with cords, and
dragged through the streets until he
died. This took place in the year 68.
. James the Less, was so called to
distinguish him from the other Saint
James, who was called the Greater'
He acquired great popularity, and was
made Bishop of Jerusalem. The
Jews threw him from a pinnacle of
the temple. He was not killed and
got upon his knees, when he was dis
patched with stones and clubs.
St. Phillip's history is obscure. He
is supposed to have preached the
Gospel in Phrygia, and that he had a
large family. ,
bt. breorge is the patron saint of
.kngland. Hw history is somewhat
mixed up with imaginative legends.
Xotsilhstanding, he has always been
held ha highest honor.
.bt. Patrick is the patron saint of
IrelancL I here is a dispute in rela
tion to the place of his birth, some
claiming him as a native of Scotland,
and others that he was born in France.
He was very successful in founding
churches, and died in the year - 432,
and was buried in the Cathedral ', of
Down.
St. r David is the patron saint of
W ales. He was of a princely family,
and : celebrated for his learning and
the sanctity of his life. He died ' in
the year 554, aged 83.
. St. Valentine fell a martyr in the
year 570. He was a Bishop, of what
place we have no means at hand to as
certain. !:-;.:.,
St. Vincent was a Spaniard. He
was roasted on a gridiron, armed
with heavy spikes, and died in the
year 304.
St. Hilary was Bishop of Poictierg,
and was banished to Phrygia by' the
Emperor Constantine, but afteswards
returned and died peacefully in 368.
St. Lucian is supposed to have been
a native of Syria, and was martyred
. on the rack in ificomedia. ; r.
St. Leonard was the. patron saint of
prisoners, and born in Lie JVlans, m
France. He got an order from Clo
vis, the King, whom he had convert-

St. Fabian -was Bishop' of -Rome,
and suffered martyrdom m the perse
cution under the Emperor Decius in

St. Benedict was the patron "saint
of the Western monks, and the found
er of the Benedictine order. He died

St Barnabas sold a considerable
property and laid the price at thef feet
of the 'disciples) and dovotod ' himself
to the Gospel.; lie was etongd to
death at Salamis.
' St. Matthias 'was one of the seventy
two disciples sent out by the, Savior,
and, on the detection of Judas, he was
chosen in his place. He is said to
have preached to a nation of ' canni
bals, and to have died at Seb istopolis.
