JOSH BILLINGSON FARMING.
"What I kao about" phamin iz kus
sid little.
Mi buzzuni friend, Horrace Gree
ley, has rit a book with the abuv name,
and altho i haven't had time to pe
roose it, yet i don't hesitate to pro
nounce it bully.
Pharmin (now daze) is prettyrnjich
all theory, and therefore it ain't - as
tonishing that a man kan live in New
York and be a good chancery Jaw
yer, and also know about pharniing
A phann (now daze) ov one hun
dred akers will produce more buck
wheat and pumkins, run on theory,
than it would sixty years ago, run on
manure and hard knoks.
There is nothing like book laming,
and the time will eventually come
when a man wont hav to hav only
one of "Josh Billings' Farmers' Al
manax" to run a pharm, or a kamp
meeting with.
Even now it ain't unknown tew see
three or four men on a pharm with
three or four spans of oxen all stand
ing still while the boss goes into the
library and reads himself up for the
day's ploughing. . : '
If I was running a pharm (now
daze) I suppose I would rather have
thirty six bushels ov sum new breed
of pat&toze razed on theory, then tew
have eighty-four bushels got in the
mean, benighted and underhand way
ov our late lamented grandparents.
pharming, after all, is a good deal
like the tavern bizzness; enny body
thinks they kan keep a hotel (now
daze), and they kan, put this is the
way that poor hotels cum tew be so
plenty, and this is likewise what
makes pharming such easy and profi
table bizzness.
Just take the theory out ov pharm
ing, and there ain't nothing left but
hard work and all fired lite krops.
When I see so much pholks rushing
into theory pharming, az there is (now
daze), and so menny ov them rushing
out agin I think ov that remarkable
piece ov skripture which remarks,
"menny .are called, but few are cho
sen." "
I onst took a pharm on shares
xniself, and run her on some theorys,
and the thing figured up this way: I
dun all the work, phurbished all the
seed and manure, had the ague for ,9
months out of twelve, for mi share
ov the profits, and the other phellow
paid the taxes on the pharm for his
share.
By mutual k onsen t i quit the pharm
at the end ov the year.
What i know about pharming aint
wuth brag-gin about, and i feel it mi
duty to state, for the benefit ov mi
kreditors, that if they ever e,xpekt
me tew pay five cents- on a dollar,
they musn't start nie in the theoretical
pharmin employment. -
If a man really is anxious tew
make munnv on a pharm, the less
theory he lays in the better, and he
must do prety much all the work his
self and support his family on what
he kant sell, and go ragged enuff all
the time tew hunt bees.
I kno ot menny pharmers who are
so afSikted with superstition that
they wont plant a single bean only in
the last quarter ov the moon, and i
know others so pregnant with science
that they wont set a gate post until
they have had the ground analised bi
sum professor of anatomy tew see if
the earth haz got the right kind of
ingredience for post holes.
This is what i call runing science
into the ground.
The fact ov itiz, that theories of all
kinds work well except in praktiss;
they are too often designed to do the
work of practiss.
They aint no theory about break
ing a mule only tew go at him with a
klub in your hand and sum blood in
yure eye, and brake him just as you
would split a log. - -
What I know apout pharmin aint
wuth much enuy how, but I under
took to brake a kicking heifer once.
I read a treatise on the subject and
phollowed the direkshuns cluss, and
got knokt endwaze in about five min
its. I then sat down and thought the
thing over.
I made uy my mind that the phel
low who wrote the treatiss was more
in the treatiss bizziness than he
in the kicking heifer trade.
was
I cum to the konklushun that what
he knu about milking kiking heifers
he had learnt by leanin over a barn
yard fence and writing the thing up.
I got up from my reflekshuns
strengthened, and went for that hief
er. I will draw a vail over the language
I used, and the things I did, but I
went in to win, and won!
The heifer never bekum a cow.
. This is one way to break a kicking
heifer, and after a man has studyed
all the books, in kreashun on the sub
ject, and tried them on, he will fall
back onto mi plan and make up his
mind, as I did, that a kicking heifer
is wuth more for beef than she is for
theoretic milk;
I have worked on a pharm just long
onnflF fw tnnw r.rinf. there iz nn nrav.
era so good for poor land as manure,
and no theory kan beat twelve hours
each day (sundaz excepted) of honest
labor applied to the sile.
. I am an old phashioned phellow,
and heartily hate most nu things be
kause I hav bin beat by them so .of
ten. ..
1 never - knu a pnarm tnat waz
worked pretty much bi .theory, but
what waz for sale or to let in a few
years, and J. never Knu a pnarm tnat
waz worked by manure and muscle,
on the good old ignorant way ov our
ancestors, but what waz handed down
from father to son, and alwus waz
noted for raising brawny-armed boys
and buxom lasses, and fust-rate pota
toes. What I kno about phiftming is
nothing but experience, and experi
ence now daze ain t worth a kuss.
I had rather hav a good looking
theory tew katch fiats witn than the
experience even ov Methusler,
. Experience is a good thing to lay
down and die with, but yu kant do no
bizziness with it (now daze); it aint
hot enuff.
Give me a red-hot hnmbug, and
kan make most ov experience in this
world ashamed ov itself.

FRIDAY.
Along nosed, thin-shanked old maid
appeared at the door ot a farmer's
house in Iowa the other day, and
wanted the farmer's wife to sign a
petition for womau's suffrage. Tile
wife called out, "Charles, Lucy, Tom,
Richard, Susy, Jane!" and was soon
surrounded by a crowd of. rosy
cheeked children. She tnmed to her
visitor and said, "Have you any of
these?" "No!" was the reply. "Then,"
replied the buxom wife, "go get a
few, aud afterwards come to mo about
woman's rights, if you feel like it."

Gov. 'Clanin, of that State, it will be

The following scene recently oc

the Judge and a Dutch witness, all the

"What is your mother tongue ?" "Ich

The greatest mile time, and
the greatest race ever ran on this
continent, was made a few days ago
at Saratoga. The race was 2 J miles,
twelve entries. Longfellow was the
winner, Kingfisher the second.
Longfellow made the first mile in
140! Kingfisher, 1:41. The time of
the race was 4.05, and the average
per mile was a very small fraction
below 1:48.
The Masonio Grand Lodge of the

splendidly engraved and printed on

Lombardy Grand Lodge, thanking
Masons of this country for their

and reception given to Earl de Gray

Hair Vigor,
For restoring to Gray Hair its
natural Vitality and Color.
A dressing
which i s at
onco agreeable,
healthy, and
effectual f o r
reserving the
lair. It soon
restores faded
or gray hair
to its original
color, with tho
gloss and freshness of youth. Thin
hair is thickened, falling hair checked,
and baldness often, though not always,
cured by its use. Nothing can restore
the hair where the follicles are de
stroyed, or the glands atrophied and
decayed; but such as remain can bo
saved by this application, and stimu
lated into activity, bo that a new
growth of hair is produced. Instead
of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi
ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. The
restoration of vitality it gives to the
scalp arrests and prevents the forma
tion of dandruff, which is often so un
cleanly and offensive. Freo from those
doleterious substances which make
some preparations dangerous and inju
rious to the hair, the vigor can only
benefit but not harm it If wanted
merely for a HAIR DRESSING,
nothing else can be found so desirable.
Containing neither oil nor dye, it does
not soil white cambric, and yet lasts
long on the hair, giving it a rich, glossy
lustre, and a grateful perfume.

Among the great

mankind than till ef

dUesaea of the Throat
and Lnngv A vast
trial of its virtue,
throughout this ana
other countries, has
shown that it dues
surely and effectually
control them. The testimony of our best citi

Cherry Pectoral will and does relieve and
ore the afflicting disorders of tbe Throat sod
(tings beyond any other medicine, ibe most
jsncerou affections of the Pulmonary Or cans
yievi to iu power; and cases of Consump
tion, cured by this preparation, are public
ly shown, so remarkable as hardly to oe be
lievejl, were they not proven beyond dispute.
As a remedy it is adequate, on which the public
may rely for full protection. By curing Coach,
y$ forerunners of more serious auease, it saves
(uroumbered lives, and an amount of suffering
not to be computed. It challenges trial, and con
vince the most sceptical, Every family sboold
keep it on band as s protection against the early '
and un perceived attack of Pulmonary Affections,
which are easily met at first, but which become
incurable, and too often fatal, if neglected. Ten
der lungs need this defences and it is unwise to
be without it. As s safeguard to children, amid
the dinressinz diseases which beset the Throat
and Chest of childhood, Ciierrt Pectoral
is invaluable; for, by its timely use, multi
tudes are rescued from premature graves, and
saved to the love and affection centred on them.
It acts speedily and surelv against ordinary colds,
securing sound and health-restoring sleep. No
one willsnffer troublesome Influenza sod pain

Originally the prodnct of long, laborious, and

is spared in making every bottle in the utmost
possible perfection. It may be confidently re
