Editor Democrat: .
Since I last saw you In Harrisburg,
some six weeks ago, I have been east
of the monntains with cattle. I left
Harrlsburg June 14, with 118 head of
cattle; went ria Lebanon Wagon Road,
.-and arrived at Crooked River without
the loss of a single head, in eight days.
I stopped on Willow Creek, Wasco
county, where I found the very richest
of bunch grass, but no hay.. There are
-water and timber in abundance.
There are a great number of settlers in
that locality, but there are no taiail
facilities whatever, and the inhabitants
complain bitterly of their utter neglect
in this respect by the powers that be.
They Are almost unanimous in attach
ing the blame to Postal Agent Under
wood. I could have secured one hun
dred subscribers for your paper in that
section had there been a mail route
through there. -Two-thirds of the set
tlers are Democrats. The people are
very anxious to organize a new county,
as it works a great hardship upon them
to be so far removed from the shire-
town of their county the Dalles.
The Ochoco country is nearly eaten
out, and cattle are very much poorer
there than in many other valleys of
Eastern Oregon. I learn that cattle
are cheaper there than in the Willani
ette Valley.
On the Fourth, at Prineville, in Ocho
co, the people observed Independence
Day with a grand ball and supper, and
. had a jolly time generally.
I think the Lebanon road an excel
lent one, and believe that it will soon
be the great thoroughfare between
Western and Eastern Oregon. Pleas
ure seekers will find the Soda Springs
and Fish Lake to be-very enticing re
sorts.
I will soon return to Willow Creek,
wnen I will write you again.
Very Trulv vours,
JAMES WHEELAN.
RCX AWAY AT COBVAtXIS. On last
Saturday morning the team attached
to the West Side Stage, coming down
Front street from the post-office, at Cor
vallis, attempted to enter the Livery
Stable of Clark & Houc-k, when the
driver, Wm. Igo, struck the near horse
with the whip, starting him to kicking;
one of his feet "accidentally" struck
the driver's foot, which was on the
brake, knocking him backwards out of
.the stage ; they then turned to the op
posite side of the street, when one of
the. horses fell and was dragged along
several yards, at which juncture the
neck-yoke broke, one end striking the
upright horse in the side, cutting a ter
rible gash- At this moment the horses
- were eaught and stopped. Mr. Igo, at
the time, did not feel the effects of the
kick he received, but since he is not
able to wear his boot, and his side is
considerably bruised.
Asr Execbable Wbetcii. We are
i lformed that for the past two weeks a
man has been infesting the blackberry
patch on the other side of the Calipooia
and insulting women by making im
; proper and insulting overtures to them.
He has made no open or forcible at
tempts upon any one, but comes upon
them suddenly when no men are about,
and displays his vile character and in
tentions in the most unmistakable
manner. Many ladies have already
been terribly, frightened by his ap
: proach and demeanor, and last Monday
: a gentleman whose wife had been thus
molested searched for some time
through the woods for the base wretch,
intending to give him a taste of cold
lead at first sight, but failed to get a
bead on him. The dirty cuss ought to
be made an example of for all future
villains of his base stamp.
y the "Ecgexe Tbail." Mr. Pur
Ar dom returned from Pitt River over the
Pengra or Eugene route, and says that
it is a miserable failure as a wagon
road, : as there is no work whatever
being performed upon it, and all the
bridges and fords are in a dilapidated
and worn out condition. He says the
Willamette Valley, and Cascade road
leading over the mountains from this
city is almost a Macadamize! road or a
tarn-pike as compared to the .fcugene
route. He thinks that unless a great
amount of work is done on the latter
road soon it will be utterly impassable
frr Mm in n. verv short time." "
Messes. W.J. Hiitabidei. & fo.
have taken a new departure from their
heretofore established usage and have
enlarged their storeroom and opened
out a fine stock of dry goods, boots and
shoes, clothing, etc., in addition to their
r usual stock of groceries. They have a
: neat establishment, and one which can
not fail to attract custom as fast as it is
known throughout this community,
Read their new card and give, them a
call.-. They will have a fine,, naming
advertisement In our columns as soon
as they can get time to prepare it. -
'. John .Metzler's raw-hide bottom
chairs have gained a reputation second
tn nn other article manufactured in
Oregon, and he is improving on them
almost dally. He now has the finest
assortment; both as to material and
and finish that we have ever seen, and
he is constantly filling orders for other
places In -the State. We commend
Metzler's chairs to the public, knowing
there is no humbug about them. They
are the cheapest and best ever made.
The Comisto Festival,. The ladies
of the Baptist Church are making the
fullest arrangements for the festival at
Tate's Hall this evening, and we are
satisfied our citizens who remain away
will miw a rare opportunity for a pleas
ant evening.
FttoM Pitt Rivek. Messrs. E. B.
Purdom and Martin Wertjs have re
turned from a trip to Big Valley, P.itt
River, California and report , them
selves Unfavorably impressed with that
country. Mr. Purdoni informs us that
the grazing lands of Big, Valley com
prise about HOO square miles, but as it is
nearly all short bunch grass the oppor
tunities for hay are very poor( and con
sequently stock must grow thin in the
winter season or bo driven off to some
more favorable:- section., , There rnj
about 22 square miles of tillable lands
In the valley, all requiring Irrigation.
The crops look quite promising this sea
son, but the harvest will bo much later
than In this valley. There are perhaps
twenty thousand herd of cattle at pres
ent in Big Valley, and the srass la fast
disappearing before the rapacious de-
mauds of so many capacious stomachs.
Those of the settlers who have been so
fortunate as to secure claims and are
able to stock them are quite prosperous
and contented, but the eligible claims
are about all taken, and many people
who have failed to secure favorable
lands are retracing their steps to civili
zation or are penetrating further Into
Lthe frontier In search of favorable lands
for settlement. There arc a eouplo of
little stores and a postoflice in the val
ley, and school houses and other marks
of permanent civilization are fast ris
ing into view. Neither of the gentle
men alove alluded to are sufficiently
favorably impressed with that country
to desire a home there, consequently
they will not return, but will continue
to reside In Linn county.
tDEAD. lion. E. B. Jloorc, of Jar-
risburgr-died at his residence In that
city on last Wednesday, after a linger
ing illness of several months, and was
buried by the -Vasonic Fraternity yes
terday. Brother Moore was a man of
rare business tact and energy, a
useful and public-spirited citizen, and
an upright and honorable gentleman,
and the people all over the county will
mourn his death as a public calamity.
Jl Is stricken widow and orphan chil
dren have the warmest sympathy of a
large circle of friends in their great
bereavement. Brother, may the sprig
of accacia, planted over thy tomb, be a
perfect type of the immortal joy upon
which thy pure spirit has entered, and
may the Grand Architect of the Uni
verse grant thee everlasting refresh
ment in his own Celestial Lodge of
Perfection. So mote it be.

Ji. M. Powers, J. P., summoned a jury
and repaired to the Calipooia, ten miles
north of this city, and held an inquest
over the dead body of Richmond, or
Richardson, who was drowned in April
last by falling from the railroad bridge,
and whose remains were not discovered
until last week, when they had floated
to the surface of the water some feet
below the bridge. The jury consisted
of S. E. Young, P. C. Harper, J. R.
Herren, D. Mansfiell, W. R. Cannon,
A. 1L Marshall. The verdict of the
jury was in accordance with the facts i
above stated. Dr. Tate, examining
physician, state? that the body was in
a bad state of decomposition the lower
jaw, left foot and botu. nanus having
been already separated from it by the
process of decay. There were found on
the person of the deceased four silver
half dollars, a one-bladed spring-back
knife, a coarse comb, a cigar-holder, a
heavy plain gold ring and a brass
watch-check bearing the figures 14.
'Squire Powers had the body decently
interred at the expense of the county.
Clear as Mra An Idaho paper
says that in that Territory "the ravages
of an insect, cicada septemdecim,' is
lemoie. rne insect aoes it with his
haustellum." This is something en
tirely new for Mr. Greeley to add to
what he' knows about farming. But It
is somewhat ambiguous. Had the edi
tor been a little more explicit, he might
have shown how the tezzerinctum of
the certiorari was overcome by the
paraphernalia of ths evanescent sub
poena, and its inherent redundancy dis
pelled by the inner eperdemis of the
oriflammc. Euaene Guard.
Viewing this subject from the esoteric
stand-point of Christian exegetical
analysis, and agglutinating the poly-
theistacal scotograph of homogenious
asceticism, we perceive at once the en
tire' Individuality of the entierty ;
whereas from that other stand-point of
incredulous synchysis which character
izes the Xenocratic hierocracy of the
animal, 'we are constantly impressed
with the entirely antiperistatical qual
ities thereof. Don't it?
Found. On the Salem road just
below Albany, a eack of woman's ap
parel, considerably worn, among which
was he head of a large China doll.
From the fact that wrapped up with
the old clothes were also a couple of
red flags on which was painted the
word "Auction" it is surmised that
they may belong to the impecunious
widow of the "late lamented," and
that they had been accidentally dropped
there by John H. Bingham, the Surratt
murderer, upon Lis trip through this
city a few days ago. However, the
proper owner, whoever. he or she may
be, can have the same by calling at
Lee Burkhart's and paying for this no
tice. . . j

Die Modf.xwelt for July the most

upon our table. It Is one of tho largest
monthlies published, and gives such a
variety of fashion cut, that it cannot
fail to please every one. We notice In
this number quite a novelty a hat
made of fir cones ; also one of paper,
plaited. Full directions are given for
making them. They arc said to be eas

magazine Is only $3 a year, and cheap
at that.
TirE ItEAi, Estate Speci At for July
is on our table. Bro. Carter slings a
ready and facile quill, and gets up a
rare and radiant paper. Tho number be

besides many articles designed to im

that the paper is quite liberally patron

choice literary matter and brilliant
with its sav and graceful fashions. Its
articles on, and Illustrations of, "Every

as to enable them to make even ordina

without tbe expense of dress-makers.
It is certainly the cheapest magazine
published.
The Cosmopolitan Benevolent

chance for some one to make a fortune.
