.TOE crops. lromaii parts of our
. county comes the most glowing reports
of the growing wheat crop. Xotwith
standing the late day at which the
-spring Wheat was' sown, the "moist
ure" with which we have been almost
continuously visited has pushed the
. crop forward at a rapid rate, and it is
almost as forward- as grain sown a
month earlier in former years. It is
now definitely ascertained that the
breadth of grain sown in the county is
i mueh larger than ever before, many
fanners having been stimulated by the
advancing price- to sow double" the
amount of former years. There is, in
point of fact, hardly any land idle that
was available, and much is put in that
was lieretorore entirely neglected as
being too poor for successful cultiva5
tion. : :'. V :---- v
The crop prospects of "Old Linn"
were never so Battering as now, and
the will this.year add additional lau
relis to her already well-earned .reputa
tJori of being the banner wheat grow-,-ing
county" of the Pacific coast.

as to have three copies of all the ordi

litely accosted us on the etreet, intro
ducing himself as "Mr. Sprnguc, of
Molalla, Clackamas county, Oregon."
Stated that he was originally born of
poor but honest parentage, and didn't
claim to have ever "seen better days.'?
Ho had just arrived In town with
twenty-one O-horse teams loaded with
four million three thousand two hun
dred and nine tshlnglea (all 'his own)
which he was taking to the new city of
Halsey to use upon eight warehouses
and live brick blocks which ho design
ed erecting there - during the coming
season. This frank statement of the
"solid" circumstances of "Mr. Bprague
from Molalla" completely subsidized
us, and wheu he blandly asked for two
bits with which to get. his clean shirt
from the Celestial laundry, we consid
ered ourself only too happy in being
permitted to'plaec in his outstretched
palm double the amount desired, and
walked away wonderingly surmising
why the der Mr. Sprague of Molalla
didn't discover . sufficient encourage
ment in our benevolent phtzaraahoga
ny to warrant him in asking for the
loan of our box of paper collars and
Sunday culls and other' apparel inci
dent to -a country editor's first-class
wardrobe .. It la perhaps needless to
add that we subsequently learned that
Mr. irprague of Molalla is a failure so
far as 6-horse teams and shingles and
warehouses and brick blocks and clean
shirts at "wash-houses are concerned,
but that as a searcher after grcensnaps
he is an eminent success.
That Fair. The Fair and Festival,
given by the young ladles of the U. P.
Mite Society, last evening, was the
nicest affair with which our city has
been favored for many years." Thr long
room In which the rair was held was
crowded with people to its utmost ca
pacity, and all expressed themselves in
the hiehest terms in commendation of
the enterprise. On the couuters were
displayed many articles of utility ami
beautv. all of which evinced the rare
taste ami excellent discrimination of
the voung ladies, and the rapid sales
made was the highest encomium which
could be passed upon them by those in
attendance. And who culd help luiy-

Wm. Davidson's Map of Post-

Mr. Wm. Davidson's map and sketch
of Portland, in which we concur: "

city of Portland, which is, in our judg

extant. Accompanying the map is a
concise ami comprehensi vesketch, from
which the immigrant can learn much in
a short compass. In alluding to the
commercial advantages of the city, Mr.

A Terrific Storm. Last Saturday
night this vicinity was visited by a
storm Vhich is almost unprecedented
in the history of Oregon. The thun
der roared through space with terrible
noise, vivid flashes of lighting - lit up
the heavens in almost a continuous
blaze, the wind blew almost a hurri
cane, and the rain descended in copious
torrents. We fear Oregon is losing her
identity, and Is suiting her climatic
proclivities to the taste of the Iowa
and Missouri immigrants who have re
cently swarmed into her borders. In
deed these be strange times!

Messrs. Cartwrlght & McCord. This is
the first lard oil factory in Oregon and
the second on the coast. The process
which is to be adopted for extracting
the lard oil is a new one, the invention
of Wm'. H. McCord, Esq., whose Inde
fatigable perseverance is raising him to
the rank of a public benefactor. Whole
carcasses of hogs are taken by his pro

cylinder, which is capable of holding
thirtv-flve hogs with a weight of two

of hot steam and pressure reduces the
