INCIDENTS OF TIIE WEEK.
: Washington, Dee. 25 A fire broke
oat at en early boor a Saturday mora

Rouse, in Richmond, Virginia, producing

terror. P. P. Clerk, steward of the ho
tel, leaped from the third story and was
seriously injured. Mrs. Emily Corneliua,
the house-keeper, E rat us Rons, S. W.
Robinson and Samuel Hines perished in
the flames. Two ladies were seen for a
few moments at a window in the fifth sto
ry, screaming for help, but they sadden
y disappeared. It is believed that sev
eral other persons perished, as there .are
a naraber of unclaimed trunks belonging
to parties from New York and other
places north, which were sated. The ho
tel register was burned, so names cannot
be obtained. The weather was so in
tensely eold that the telegraph wires in
front of the building were covered with
ice, and ice formed n ineh thick upon
the steam fire-engiqm. A dispatch dated
last evening, gives too names of 11. A.
Thomas, agent of the Panorama of the
Pilgrim's Progress, W. II. Pace, of Dan
Ule, Va., and J. B. Farress, Mossenger
of the Southern Expres Co., as being
enoog the number burned to death
Seveo other guests ate missing. The
loss is estimated at $300,000.

committed suicide to-day by taking mor
phine. Pecuniary trouble is supposed to

Vicksbubo, Dee. 21. The steamer
jYTcfc Wall from St. Louis, to Yicksburg,
with 135 deck and 14 cabin passengers,
was snagged on Sunday night. Seven
teen dead bodies have been recovered,
and more are supposed to be lost.
INew York. Dee. 23. Fifteen hun
dred pounds of nitro glycerine exploded
at the Hoosae tunnel to-day. John Yel
sar, the superintendent, was blown to
atoms.
Oaklaso, Cat., Dec. 22. Allen Fi-h,
a teamster, was instantly killed in this
ity to day by falliog under the wheels
of a loaded runaway team which he was
trying to stop. He was a single .man
and aged about 3d years.
Los Akoeles, Dee. 22. Yesterday
af e'avoon while Mrs. Ellen Burns was
huldiig her husband's horse, which
were detiched from a carriage in eon se
quence of a breakdown, the horses be
came frightened and ran away. Mrs.
Burns in some manner became entangled
in the reins and was dragged a dutaoce
et 100 yards, receiving injaries from the
fleet of which she soon died.
Losdon, Dec. 27. Eight persons were
killed by accident on the railroad near
Hatfield.
Virginia City, Dec. 24. This morn
ing the railroad robbers were brought op
for sentence. Motions for new trial and
the arrest of judgment were overruled,
and the defendants were sentenced as
follows : Chapman, 18 years ; Parsons,
20 yearj; Cockerel!, 22 years, and Sin
clair 13 years and 6 months.
Rochester, Dec. 27. A fire yester
day destroyed the publication buildiog
of the .Daily Democrat , oEce, pre
rooms, and a large flooring mill. Loss,
415-.000, half insured.
Cincinnati, Dec. 21. Formal notice
is served, on Campbell by Schenck's
friends that the right to a seat in Con
gress will be contested.

Bontwell has authorized the payment from

is a Mrs. Samuel Shoeo, who is the moth
er of three pair of twin boys and two
pair of twin girls, and in all, twelve boys
and six girls, all of whom arrived at man
hood and womanhood, except one boy
that died when three days old. Mrs.
Shoen still survives her husband, and
had at one time seven boys in the army.
One pair of twins went through the war
and died soon after within a few hours
of each other, but thirty miles apart.
