Among the competitors who took premiums
at the State Fair, we observed the following;
fr im our county:
-.J. A. Millard, Sret premium for the beat
lot of grapes, and also for the test varietj.
Mrs. Duniwuy, several premiums; for mil
linery and dress making.
-Mr. Backensto, several premium for
Votlletl and preserved fruits.
' Miss Alice Griffin, first premium for me

'"Mrs. J as. Xixon, second premium ' for
equestrianship.
C. - Curkhart, first premium on wheat.
A. Savage, pretaivta fur stallion of all

beer.
. Cbas. Mealey, first premium on hit fine
chamber set f furniture.
Nimrud Price, first premium far Chester
. White hog and sweepstake premium for
best hog of any breed.
There were- dowbtIei maor others who
took premium.', but the were all we hap
pen ed (to -observe.
- i.Th Railroad. -The Santiam bridge is
now out of danger from high water, and in
another week it will lie complete!. Its es-
: tlmated cost is $7-5,000, including the 3.000
feet of tressel work on this side. The rail
road grade is completed to the depot in this
city, and will te tn the 100-mi!e stake (16
miles sliore town) in about two weeks. The
track is (aid seren miles this side of Salem,
and that department is pushed forward with
all speed.. The superintendent of track
lying says he will lie at the Alimny depot
with" the road by the 10th of next month
bat we hardly believe the thing can be did.
Dcstt. VTe would say something alxut
tUa dust at the Sute Fair, but we don't like
to revive unpleasant memories, and then the
poor Saleiuitcs and Fair managers have been
to unmercifully lclabored by other journals
throughout the State, that we allow the
"milk of human kindness in our soul to in
tercede in their behalf and prevent os from
inflicting further blows on their already
newspaper-battered pates. We will only
Vay to them "Go thou and sin no more,"
'or we will next year assist our brother quil
lists in putting a coal of fire under your
tails figuratively speaking. -
Dbow.ved. Oar correspondent from . Ya
quina Bay informs us of the accidental
drowning of one of the oldest residents of
that section Mr. Celestian Joscylin on
last Sunday. lie had taken some vegetables
to Newport on that morning, and after doing
his trading and, unfortunately, taking con
siderable "stimulants," stated for home in
:hU canoe. When about 3 miles from New
port he fell out of the boat, and before as
sistance could reach him the vital spark had
tiled. An inquest was held and a verdict of
"accidental drowning" rendered.
A Pbttt Tnier. Spud Murphy, the notorious
;petty larceny thief of Oregon, was last Friday
nipped by Marshal Long, of this city, for stealing
.a suit of clothes from Orrin Rubarts on ' the . day
previous.,, "Fpud" was arraigned before Recorder
.Arnold and plead guilty, when be was turned over
to the Sheriff in default of $300 bonds. If the
Prosecuting Attorney at opr next term of Court
can make a jury see Grand Larceny in Spnd's in
vestment in - the , etothins line, our people will
. probably lose sight of that champion light-fingered
gent for a year or two, and he will gain an
opportunity to learn a more respectable trade ua
der the espiooago of superintendent iVatkms.

A o'er True Taie. In; company with
the companion of our joys and sortows (lit
erally, our "rife,) we went to Snlent lost
week to "interview" the State Fair--our
means of transportrtion being n buggy with
an equine quadruped attached thereto.
After remaining twenty-four hours at the
"Hub," associating with the most respecta
ble and exclusive members of the Legisla
ture, hobnobbing with' State officials, rub
bing our hands over' the beautiful exterior
of Ben. Ilollndny's privato car, drinking
"cider" at the same stand at which Count
Pourtalcs had just before borrowed a match
for his cignr, occupying the same seat with
Ben. Uayden at the theater, and performing
several othor eminently respectable feats,
with a reckless profligacy heretofore un
known to the journalistic - profession, we
turned the tail of our gnthio steed toward
the Capital and his snout southward, and
started for home about five o'clock on Fri
day evening by this gold watch nnd cbain 1
And now occurred the incident which impil!
cd us to write this article. When about
half way between Salem, and Albany, and
whilo urging our already jaded' steed to his
"level best,", the sable screen of night de
scended upon ns nnd almost obscured the
road from view, causing us to urge our
faithful equine transporter to a faster gait
in the fear that some nnfortnnate "road
agent"'might further dnmage his chance
for an eternal abode in the realms of bliss
by arresting our headlong coarse for merce
nary purposes. But to relieve the over
weening anxiety of the reader we will here
pause to state that no bold robber chose to
peril bis soul (saying nothing nf his life) by
intercepting our way, and so far as robbers
nre concerned we got home safe enough.
But, nevertheless, nn unfortunate incident
occured, and we will here relate it in as
concise and succinct a manner as a duo re
gard for the rules of composition will per
mit, only prefacing our narrative by inform
ing the reader it was a calm still night, and
after the shades of evening hnd fully gath
ered over the earth it was as dark as the
ebony face of a Congo nigger in a window
less dungeon in the bowel of the earth or
the last South Carolina Legislature.
But, to return to our tale. We arrived
at Santiam Citv about 8 o'clock r. m., and
were rowed across the ferry by tho propri
etor thereof, named Terkoon, and after dri
ving about an hour more through the black
darkness (the faithful horse finding the road
for himself) we arrived at the door of our
own humble domicile in this city. Well, you
don't see anything wonderful in all this
"balderdash," do you? But hold on, we'll
show you. The next morning on counting
our finances we discovered that we had giv
en the ferryman, Terlion, in the darkness
of the night previtwis. a ten dollar gold
piece instead of fifty cents in pnvment fir
lerriage. Hell, as ten dollars ain't to lie
sneezed r.t by a pMir devil f a newspaper
publisher, aitd believing that all we hnd to
do to rtelaim our money was to mention it
to tne Iharnn nt nantiam titv. we procured
a horse and buggy nnd immediately return-
ed to that place and very modestly related
to the ferryman the story nf iuir mistake
and asked him to disorirc the vnlW neice :
but to our utter astonishment and litnnv
t'.e man professed entire ignorance of the
transaction and absolutely denisd ever
handling our ten dollar niece, and so we
bail to wend our sad nnd sorrowful wav
back home azain with our horse's tail be
tween his legs.

Sad Accidest at Browxsvili.k. Last Toes-
day, as Mr. Win. Cochran, of Brownsville, was
driving a horse attached to a baggy across the
bridge on the Calipooia river at tbst place, the
animal became frightened and backed the end of
the vehicle off of the bridge, throwing Mrs. Coch
ran ont and precipitating her to the ground below
the bridge, breaking ber arm. dislocating her
wrist and bruising her entire body terribly. Dr.
Hill, of this city, was immediately summoned to
dress the wounds, and hopes are entertained tbat
she will survive ber injuries.
TVk are informed that Mrs. Delazon Smith
arrived at her old home in Iowa in good sea
son and with a visible improvement in Iiealt! .
Upon her arrival her aged father met at the
dcoof and imparted to her the crushing in
telligence tbat her mother was dead and imd
been buried onlv two days. That was in
deed ad news to one who had traveled near
ly three thousand miles to see that mother
from whom she had been separated for al
most twenty years.
Sheep. Mr. Lnckey, of Kugeno, had at
the State Fair 2G head of fine imported Eng
lish Cotewold sheep, which attracted much
attention. 1 hese animals arrived last month
from England, at a cost of $15Q to $400 per
head. Iheaverago cup of this stock of
sheep is said to be from 10 to 25 pounds.
