i v. Ictuooctat. IRIDAY J USB 14, 1870. THE RATIFICATION MEETING. Tho ratification meeting of the jubilant Democracy of Linn, at this city; on lost Saturday night, vras a success. Ilia west ing, although an impromptu one, vras a rare and felicitous occasion, whereat the Democracy earnestly manifested apprecia tion of their great victory. A procession numbering about two hundred torches, and a large number of transparencies, headed by a band, of music, inarched through the principal streets of the city. Court House quare was brilliantly lighted with bonfires, Icy rockets, and other fire works. A speaker's stand was improvised in front of the Court House, and around this and upon the square a crowd of some ten or twelve hundred persons men, women, children and defeated candidates assembled. The principal speech of the evening was made by lion. John Burnett, of Corvallis. The effort of the speaker was a happy one, and was loudly applauded. Hon. Geo. R. llelm and Mr. A. U. Jones followed with Veil timed and stirring speeches. Not an . Incident occurred to compel the regrets or Check the universal good feeling of the crowd. We point with gratified pride and exultant spirit to the victory and to this celebration of it, and the giant Democracy of Linn county promises to achieve, on a bigger scale, a repetition of both two years hence. SILETZ RIVER. Mr. Burkhart, one of a large party of pleasure seekers at the Salmon River ocean .. beach, writes us the following note, which may be of interest to persons contemplating similar trips to the sea side : ' JZditort Democrat : The road to this portion of the coast is rather rough, though probably a good as it will be this season. .. Tho scenery from this point Salmon River is the finest probably that this coast affords. The ni-.;ath of the Silets is about eight mile below or south of that of the Sainton. Midway from thee points on the beach is plainly to be seen Cape Foulweather on the south, and Cae Lookout on the north, which t probably the most western portion of the Oregon eoat. 'As for fish they are taken only by the Indians, in small quantities, and sold very bigh. Flounders and perch, rock oyster and other shell fih, mnv be had in abund ance. Taking the trfp altogether, it is indeed a pleasant one, though persons cull ing this seaon of the year ahuuld be well prepared with tents, etc Y-ir. 4.?., L. C. Bl'RKBABT. . TcureKANCC Lectcsu. C. Best will lecture on Temperance, at the f.lluwing places, and requests the people to tarn out j and hear him, and have the time and places mnnou aced at their schools and puhho meet ings. Oil Sundays the Lecture will c-imm tnence at 2:30 o'clock in the after oon and on other days of the week at 7 o'clock in the evening. The meetings will be public: McFarlands School II ue. The Statesman is very extravagant in its praise of Reynolds and Leadbetter for the part they took in the capture of the es raped convict in the lower part of this coun ty. The truth, is, neither of these gentle men bad much to do in finding the convicts These had been tracked up and their place ef concealment discovered by citizens of Jefferson before those two men arrived at that Tillage. After the convicts' where a bouts bad been discovered a party of citi zens was formed and Reynol Js and Leadbet ter having arrived, joined the party and thus ' Barely sueceded in being "in at the death." The' long and short of the matter is simply this? The public is indebted to citizens of Jefferson for the capture and to no one else. Ma. C. B. R-iLiXD, Chairman of the Committee of Arrangements, informs ns that there will be a picnic celebration of the 4th of July on the bills near Piekard's School bouse,-in Marion county. The ora tion wilt be delivered by Hon. B. F. Bon bam of Salem'. This is the first celebration or this year that w'e have beard of. Many ef our citizens will likely atail themselves of it.
