In slopwork shops girs caa seldom earn more than their r room rent, except by overwork. In ' alack times their suffering is extreme; , eirls having been known to work r weeks with only water and bread, or crackers for food, and fortunate if able to procure an ounce of tea. In dull - times, many have lived for weeks on - five cents worth each of stale bread rer week while seekinsr work. The lodging house keepers charge working : "women higher rates than men; many J refuse to have them in their house at : any price. Hence they are often ' obliged to live and sleep in localities where they would be ashamed to let any one know they ever went. Yet - few ever break down morally or be .; come untidy in dress. Those women ' who take work homo from the slop- a shops, provident, aid and other char- itable societies receive as follows:' Shirts, 4 to 7 cents., fine bosomed shirts, 10 to 25 cents; satin vests, 20 cents; pants 15,20 and 37 cents ; coaU ; i 0 ' cents; French calico suits, lined sacks, faced skirt, 20 cents; long white night dresses, 50 cents. Of 2u,000 women in and about Boston who live by sew- ing, very few earn over $12 a week; the average of wages do nut exceed 2 75. Many poor women take this slop ' and charity work iu quantities, and give it to others, to do, still further lessing the recipts of the actual work- ers, who are usually women with small r families dependent upon their labur ' for support. Paper-box makers av- erage about $3 per week. 1'actory life is much harder on wo men than it was twenty uve years ugo; instead of tending two looms as then, ahe is -required to tend six, wmle a ' week's work now will produce as much comfort as when she only tended one loom. Very few working women of any e lass ever have a good Leu wi-u : sufficient bed covering.
