Firemen are anticipating a hugo ttnto to
morrow. The municipal authorities of Cor
Ylli have extended to the Comptny and
their guests the hospitalities of that city,
and those who were with the excursion of
our firemen to CorvalU last year will under
stand that the people of that beautiful and
publio spirited municipality don't do things
by halves. The magnificent steamer Fanny
Fulton will leave Albany at 7 o'clock a. m ;
returninj-. will leave Corvallis at 2 o'clock
V. . The excursionsists will be accompan
ied by the Albany Brass Band, and the
Vire Company will take along their magniti
xsent engine fr the purpose of giving our
hospitable Corvallis neighbors an opportu
nity to judge of its merits as a "squirtist."
Tickets, for adults, 50 cents for the round
trip ; children under 12 years old, accom
panied by their parents, free. The entire
"proceed of the excursion is for the benefit
of the Fire Company

Gose East. Rev. T. S. Kendall, of this
county, started East on the last teamer, to
attend the General Assembly of the United
Presbyterian church, which assembles at
Pittsburg on the 16th inst. Mr. K. is one
at the early pioneer of Oregon, having
crossed the plains in 1845 a quarter of a
century ago ; and this is bis first viait to the
home and scenes of his childhood.
Mr. David Smith, an old and respected
resident of this county, started on last Tues
day for a visit to his fiiends in -Misoari.
lie was accompanied by Sir. SamM Cooper,
whom we mentioned last week as having de
termined to once more look upon his youth
ful haunts and early friends. r.

Speaking at Scio. Hon. Geo. R. Helm
will address the people on the political
issues of the day, at Scio, on Saturday, May
14th.
John -J. Whitney. Democratic candidate
for Connty Judge of this county, will speak
-at Scio on to-morrow (Saturday).
. Roth of these gentlemen are able speakers,
and the Democracy will delight to ' honor
them. The atmosphere of May will be con
certed into that of August for all Radicals
"who may go hear them.
Tea. Mr. J. Barrows has just received
from the house of Phillips, Taber & Co.,
San Francisco, a large and curiously orna
mented chest, and the chest is filled with the
best tea we have ever tasted in Oregon, (and
a "tea-ist" we're a suaces). The entire
Democrat family is indefinitely supplied
with tea from that chest, and if any of our
i readers desire a nice cup of the beverege
let them comedown with the 'collateral"
to Mr. Barrows and he will accommodate
them. : ' .
That Festival. The Fair and Supper
given by the ladies of the Congregational
Church, last Friday night, was numer
ously attended and highly appreciated. The
riett profits of the enterprise aggregated
$145. which we understand will be appro
printed to repairing the Congregational
-chapel. The editors of the Democrat re
turn thanks to the lady managers for courte
sies extended to them. . .
The C ax vass. Messrs. Slater and Wil
son, opposing candidates for Congress, have
completed the canvass east of the Oascade
Mountains, and are now discussing the issues
In the northern part of this valley. By ref
erence to the list of appointments in to
day's paper it will be seen that these gentle
men will speak at the Court House in this
city on Saturday, the 14th instant. ;

Convention, and I did not expect that ho
would be a candidato ; he never authorized
me to put his nnmo in nomination, but after
the Convention had cast tlirco or four ballots
for Clerk, I nominated him, on my own
responsibility, believing that tho presnntn
tion 'of his nnmo would serve to unite the
conflicting elements in the contest for that
office Mr. Jones' nomination was as fuirns
that of any other nominee of that Conven
tion, and I believe almost every delegate in
that body will bear mo out in thisvtntnmcnt.

Policy No. 1.1,054, bearing date January 21, 1PA3.
He paid annual payments to January 21, ISfiS,
inclusive. Since then nothing baa been paid. He
died Ang. 2, 1SS9, over eighteen months after last
payment of premium, yet your company, working

pays Ihe widow and orphans tbe whole policy, de
ducting only the premium due: while in all other
companies doing business here, about which - we
know anything, the policy would long since nave
been forfeited.

tion that the family would nut have received
