llo! ro tu KxciRstoN ! Our gttUftnt
Firemen are anticipating a hugo ttnto to
morrow. The municipal authorities of Cor
Ylli have extended to the Comptny and
their guests the hospitalities of that city,
and those who were with the excursion of
our firemen to CorvalU last year will under
stand that the people of that beautiful and
publio spirited municipality don't do things
by halves. The magnificent steamer Fanny
Fulton will leave Albany at 7 o'clock a. m ;
returninj-. will leave Corvallis at 2 o'clock
V. . The excursionsists will be accompan
ied by the Albany Brass Band, and the
Vire Company will take along their magniti
xsent engine fr the purpose of giving our
hospitable Corvallis neighbors an opportu
nity to judge of its merits as a "squirtist."
Tickets, for adults, 50 cents for the round
trip ; children under 12 years old, accom
panied by their parents, free. The entire
"proceed of the excursion is for the benefit
of the Fire Company
What Silly Nonsbxse is that in which
'rtie enemies of A. C. June, Democratic can
didate for Connty Clerk, are indulging,
by circulating calumnies and innuendoes re
flecting upon his moral and religious char
acterthat he is a Mormon, etc. all of
vhich they know to be fnle and unfounded.
"Mr. Jonw has been a resident of Linn and
lolk counties since 1S53. and stands as high
as any citizen of Oregon as regards morality
and honesty, and a head and shoulders above
some of those who are attempting to traduce
him. The people with whom he came to
this-country are in Linn countv, jnd they,
as weil.as all with whom he has done busi
ness or in any manner associated, Fpeak in
the highest terms of him as a gentleman r,f
atriet integrity and worthy of trust and con
fidence. "The Rite8 f td( West." by Mrs.
Frances Fuller Victor, is an interesting and
thrilling narrative of lire and adventure in
the Ricky Mountains and Orezn. embrac
ing events in the life of mountain-men and
pioneers, with the early history of the
Northwestern Sbpe including an account
of the fur traders, the Indian tr"iles, the
overland imtnizration. tbs- Oregon Missions
-and the tragic fate of the Rt. Dr. Whitman
-and family. It is an unuually readable
and attractive hook, especially and peculiar
ly adapted to the rising generation in this
"State, who nnsht, Wyond all others, to le j
familiar with the history of their native
or adopted State. Mr. E. B Purdum is
-ole agent, and we have no doubt will find
ready sale for all the volumes he may offer.
IBy all means read "The River of the West."
Gose East. Rev. T. S. Kendall, of this
county, started East on the last teamer, to
attend the General Assembly of the United
Presbyterian church, which assembles at
Pittsburg on the 16th inst. Mr. K. is one
at the early pioneer of Oregon, having
crossed the plains in 1845 a quarter of a
century ago ; and this is bis first viait to the
home and scenes of his childhood.
Mr. David Smith, an old and respected
resident of this county, started on last Tues
day for a visit to his fiiends in -Misoari.
lie was accompanied by Sir. SamM Cooper,
whom we mentioned last week as having de
termined to once more look upon his youth
ful haunts and early friends. r.
May they all have a pleasant visit and a
aafe return.
Speaking at Scio. Hon. Geo. R. Helm
will address the people on the political
issues of the day, at Scio, on Saturday, May
14th.
John -J. Whitney. Democratic candidate
for Connty Judge of this county, will speak
-at Scio on to-morrow (Saturday).
. Roth of these gentlemen are able speakers,
and the Democracy will delight to ' honor
them. The atmosphere of May will be con
certed into that of August for all Radicals
"who may go hear them.
Tea. Mr. J. Barrows has just received
from the house of Phillips, Taber & Co.,
San Francisco, a large and curiously orna
mented chest, and the chest is filled with the
best tea we have ever tasted in Oregon, (and
a "tea-ist" we're a suaces). The entire
Democrat family is indefinitely supplied
with tea from that chest, and if any of our
i readers desire a nice cup of the beverege
let them comedown with the 'collateral"
to Mr. Barrows and he will accommodate
them. : ' .
That Festival. The Fair and Supper
given by the ladies of the Congregational
Church, last Friday night, was numer
ously attended and highly appreciated. The
riett profits of the enterprise aggregated
$145. which we understand will be appro
printed to repairing the Congregational
-chapel. The editors of the Democrat re
turn thanks to the lady managers for courte
sies extended to them. . .
The C ax vass. Messrs. Slater and Wil
son, opposing candidates for Congress, have
completed the canvass east of the Oascade
Mountains, and are now discussing the issues
In the northern part of this valley. By ref
erence to the list of appointments in to
day's paper it will be seen that these gentle
men will speak at the Court House in this
city on Saturday, the 14th instant. ;
'Shoot, LukeI". Our sportsmen should
recollect that P. C. Harper & Co. have a
limited supply of double-barreled shot-guns
of excellent material and handsome manu
facture ; and they are selling them at a re
markably low figure. Call and look at
them.-
A CARD FROM HI. M. SMITH.
Editor Democrats
1 unuetstand that the enemies of Mr. A;
C. Jones are attempting to innko capital
against him because of the munner in which
he received the nomination. As I placed
his name before tho Convention, I desire to
stato some facts in regtird to that matter.
Mr. Jones did not speak to moon tho sub
ject of the Clerkship after I camo to tho
Convention, and I did not expect that ho
would be a candidato ; he never authorized
me to put his nnmo in nomination, but after
the Convention had cast tlirco or four ballots
for Clerk, I nominated him, on my own
responsibility, believing that tho presnntn
tion 'of his nnmo would serve to unite the
conflicting elements in the contest for that
office Mr. Jones' nomination was as fuirns
that of any other nominee of that Conven
tion, and I believe almost every delegate in
that body will bear mo out in thisvtntnmcnt.
VM. M. SMITH.
SaF"Our readers have observed that we
rarely praise patent medicines, and that wo
advertise only the very best of them. But
now, the remnrknblo recovery of Mrs. Rice,
of Canastota, from her distressing and al
most helpless scrofulous disease, which is
known throughout tho community, and un
questionably tho effect of Ayer's Sursapa
rilla, leads us to publish without reserve the
remarkable efiicacy of this medicine. Wo
do this in the interest of tho afflicted. Any
remedy which can so effectually "raise one
from the dead," should be universa.ly
known ; and we wish it may be universally
a successful ns it has been in the cao of
Mrs. Rice. Daily Journal, Syracuse.
Democratic Speakinc. Judge Stout, of
Portland, is announced to speak in this city
to-mrrrow -night. Members of all political
creeds are invited, and the ladies are particu
larly asked to grace the occasion with their
presence. Judge Stout's well known ability
as a public speaker is a sufficient guarantee
that all who go to hear him will be happily i
and profitably entertnined.

the aCaira of the large and destitute family, left
by an old resident ot this eity, who died Aug. 2d,
1KG9, and who wa insured lit the New bngland
Mutual Life Insnianc Company, we take pleasure
in tuakins; the following statement for tbe informa
tion of the pnblie :
A. E. C. Miller was insured by ordinany Life
Policy No. 1.1,054, bearing date January 21, 1PA3.
He paid annual payments to January 21, ISfiS,
inclusive. Since then nothing baa been paid. He
died Ang. 2, 1SS9, over eighteen months after last
payment of premium, yet your company, working
under the eiiitnllo Lape Lawa of Massachusetts,
pays Ihe widow and orphans tbe whole policy, de
ducting only the premium due: while in all other
companies doing business here, about which - we
know anything, the policy would long since nave
been forfeited.
By tbe New England Mutual,- 'the widow baa
been paid $4,650 50. This we consider munifi
cent, mere especially when we loke into considera
tion that the family would nut have received
cent from any other company doing business on
tbia coast. This in our estimation is enough to
recommend this company above all others. This
is Equity, this is Mutunlity. We, therefore, com
mend this company to tbe publio, as the ouly com
pany that has no forfeitures.
We herewith inclose yon the acknowledgments
